Great you came around -sort of- on Raw and Titane. Agree completely on No time to die. You miss the boat completely on Sonic Youth, but thats ok!!! Mariana Enriquez, Brett, Mariana Enriquez, a must! P.S. Mad God. Masterpiece.

I did. And I checked my message box and it turns out I noticed the initial charge and I messaged this podcast admin about it on Feb 20 2020 wondering if it were an accidental one time charge to cover all previous episodes. Admin ignored my message. Now Patreon is citing their 60 day policy, which is absurd. I do not care about your policy, It's my money and I did not receive any good or service for it. The billing agreement is very clear, I am signed up for a monthly contribution and did not agree to any such "annual membership fee" and want my $190 refunded. They are telling me to take it up with the content creator. What a mess.

Just make sure you sign up for a membership with a one-time contribution every month. And I advise you to pay with PayPal, not directly with a credit card. If you have a PayPal account link it to Patreon and pay with it, and you can claim a refund in case anything illicit happens in a window of 6 months.

Upon further investigation this has occurred two times. Same date 2021 and 2020. Dealing with Patreon directly does not seem to be going anywhere and since the charges are older than 60 days even my CC company aren't being helpful. Sucks to be out $190! I love this podcast but for that I could have an upgraded membership or something else.

Interesting, difference of opinions, I guess. I'm happy people liked the Shards but I never subscribed to the podcast to listen to an audiobook. That's what Audible is for, so I was super relieved when the Shards ended. It was good and I would probably get the audiobook but its not what I like about the Podcast, the monologues and movie reviews have always been where its at in my opinion. Personally, I think Adam is an underrated presence on the show. A lot of the guests simply try way too hard to be clever or cool and it just gets exhausting, and it gets boring long before the interview ends. Plus a lot of the guests always seem to agree with Bret even on things that seem very idiosyncratic to him personally, like they're trying to impress him or something. Adam is just himself and its definitely a breath of fresh air.

Honestly, movie reviews? Bret and Adam bantering like an AM radio duo? That BEE is exhausted after the exertions of The Shards, et al, is understandable. But please get some decent guests lined up, and if there isn't the energy for an opening monologue, just skip it.

I think my favorite coming-of-age movie is Quadrophenia. It captures teen angst brilliantly and is so funny.
I have to admit that I was shaking my head a little when Bret felt movies were redeemed by a formulaic, 60 year old franchise movie. I guess that is where we are. Most stuff that I watch I'm fine on the tv, but I watched The Velvet Underground movie last week and that could benefitted from being projected. I even have a projector, but I don't use it all the time.
I watched last week's recommendation of The White Lotus. Mike White totally killed it. It was so nice to watch something actually funny. Those teen girls were brilliant. Why has Mike never been on the podcast? He has a crazy family backstory.

Agree about SY Rather Ripped. It’s been described as “poppier” album. Incinerate is great.

I'm not sure if Bret has ever done an in depth "book review" on the podcast, but would love to hear his thoughts on Franzen's Crossroads since he said he was reading that in the month of October.
The no guest Bret monologue of movies and Q&A is awesome. Bret and Adam bouncing off each other is entertaining, more of this please.

Good summation of bond films how it’s a set formula to deflate our initial thrill ride. Of what was reviewed I’ve only seen Stillwater, it seems like the flawed cornfed beard and baseball hat is indeed a 2021 Hollywood type. Needs more N word, meth and less forced tenderness to be entertaining and believable. Underdone and overdone

Hey Bret and Adam. The new format is as great as always. The Q&A is a feast and you guys are terrific together. Didn't hear my question - may be down in the queue - is this where we ask? Here it is again: It was about Kenneth Anger - as a guest idea, but I'm not sure how active he is these days (born in 1927) + what you think, Bret of his movies, books, and legacy. And since I just thought of it - have you ever been intrigued by the Bunker Spreckels story?

While I agree on the other “white middle aged guy” movies, I definitely enjoyed Stillwater more than Bret, I ended up finding the domestic life in Marseille pretty charming (I miss going abroad a lot in general) and Damon was fantastic. That being said, I agree there’s grease you could put on the structure and script to elevate it to something special as opposed to average. I must also confess that I had no idea it was (loosely) based on a true story until after going to see it.
Anyway another great episode.

Hey Bret, yes Titane and No Time To Die are total cinematic experiences in their own separate ways. Saw some interesting movies at the London Film Festival last week; The Power Of The Dog, The Lost Daughter, Benedetta, Sundown, Nitram etc. Enjoyed becoming involved in the family of Crossroads. You might like Sonic Youth's Rather Ripped, it's probably their most melodic record.

These episodes with film reviews and Q and A are awesome. Really enjoyed the episode. The thumbnails for Stillwater and Joe Bell were right next to each other on the on demand menu a couple of months back and I remember thinking that was kind of funny. Thanks for the answer to my question, and props to Adam for reading it haha. I wasn't naming Nora Ephron and Barry Levinson because I'm a big fan of their films, although I certainly have no problem with either director. I was naming them because I feel like having those types of directors is important for the movie ecosystem regardless of if one personally likes their films. There's constant handwringing over the loss of the mid budget film and many types of films in general. Directors like Ephron had major some major successes(and a few financially not so successful films) on a mid budget scale and she seemed like she wanted to entertain people and sell tickets. If there was a Sleepless in Seattle or You've Got Mail today I think people would go, and once one mid budget drama/comedy/romance is successful, I think it can gradually open the door for more films on a mid budget scale to get through and just in general create a healthier landscape. The rift between the big budget director and the no compromise artist seems to be extending into the fanbase as well, as Bret felt the need to immediately say that he didn't miss Ephron's or Levinson's films, but I was just saying I think those directors are healthy for the industry and create a healthier environment to give more types of films a chance to be seen and have an audience. I personally like a lot of what A24 has put out, but they do seems to have some directors who are very talented and competent but do not have much interest making their material more friendly to a wider audience.
