Almost every detail outside of the conversation and the look of the individual employees comes from that article, from the food they order to the guests at the restaurant. So he's not working from his touted excellent memory of that day. He's doing research and passing it off as memory. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. It's what writers do. And he's tipping his hand as an unreliable narrator, repeatedly telling us that his friends are always getting on his case for embellishing his stories. "The Shards" is a campfire story Bret is telling us. But I'm like a 7-year-old who just stopped believing in Santa Claus who knows he'd enjoy Christmas more if the lie were real.
