The B.E.E. Podcast - 12/27/20 - Amanda Milius - SILVER

Bret arrives excited for an important lunch meeting but leaves shaken and perplexed in Part 9 of The Shards. Filmmaker Amanda Milius and Bret discuss the unheralded streaming success of her documentary The Plot Against the President, the glaring lack of neutrality in the American news media and rising from eager campaign volunteer all the way to the State Department.

Comments

This certainly stood the test of time

Hillduh

Bret Bret Bret Bret. What are you doing with these kind of people?

Ryan Ward

Good episode. What can I do to make this woman my wife?

Jett

Great episode of The Shards. The guest Amanda Millius is insufferable and a total hypocrite who operates on pure ideology (bad ideology). She's the last person who should be complaining about this. What a godawful interview and thinker she is. You can criticize RussiaGate without entertaining a MAGA republican who believes everything Patrick Bateman does sans the murder. Another case of favoring endless culture wars over substantive class politics (because people like Amanda only want to expand income inequality and corporate strangleholds over all of our lives.)

Brooks Harley

I live in Mexico. Trump was right. You know who was offended by what he said? Rich, white, American liberals...not Mexicans.

Antonio Primavera

No

Constantine

Cool

Francis Foster

shut up neo-lib. dont worry youll get your wars back but the perpatrators will give you just enough bs pandering to keep you distracted.

darren rockwell

No, you are just a coward and religious fanatic.

Michael Walsh

One of the worst things about TDS, liberal media, and the Democratic Party generally is that you almost can't blame people for sympathizing with and even embracing figures like Trump (Obama inspired a similarly deranged, para-social cult in the aftermath of the annoying conservative Christianity of the Bush era). That said, *any* adult who psychically identifies with a politician as much as this guest does is boring at best (this was an insufferable interview), and at worst, well...I'm not gonna speculate. The Shards is great; I haven't been able to read really any fiction during Covid, it is restoring my need for and faith in The Novel ❤

Gabriel Jones

BEST interview this year! So glad you introduced me to Amanda Milius

Michael Bronspigel

Hysteria of the left as a thing greater than the hysteria of the right has completely lost ground now, and to be honest wasn’t really ever the case. Echo chambers and increased polarisation have made both extremes completely insufferable. But to keep pointing to the left as the only culprit of this bullshit just makes this another tedious culture wars podcast. I’m from the U.K. and Trump by proxy from either side of the aisle makes me zone out instantly. Move on. Shards is great though.

Thomas Raworth

great soundtrack for watching the capitol events

Alin Constantin

Great segment, terrible guest

Francis Foster

Lefties didn't say shit no matter what Antifa did. The selectivity of their indignation is part of their religion.

Michael Walsh

Seems to be a weird time to be doubling down on the Trumper delusion. I have no love for PC/cancel culture, and am pretty burned on politics in general, but I still view Trump as a threat.

Alec K. Redfearn

I feel your discontent, but hard to understand the “Trump its no the problem, the real danger is the pc and paranoid attitude of the woke generation and the democrats” after seeing what’s happening today at DC. You should stop flirting with this madness. What is the point, really? Abrazo, Bret

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Are you a fan of the New German Cinema of the 1970's? If so, do you have a favorite director? Fassbinder, Herzog, Wenders? Thank you!

Amie Falch

Good episode. "The Shards" is great! Amanda Milius was interesting, but she has a very obvious bias. The american duopoly always gives me a big headache. From a foreign policy perspective what you get is Coke or Pepsi.

Sven Safarow

Was curious about her movie so I asked her a question on Insta to see if she’s biased/misinformed...she is 😅...anyone who thinks Sydney Powell’s kraken is still coming is delusional

Sebastian ospina

I enjoyed The Shards and the interview, and even watched the movie afterwards. I'm glad Bret doesn't talk about politics all of the time, but once in a while it's interesting and unfortunately, part of the culture. I guarantee those who complained about it in the comments would be delighted if he was interviewing a full blown leftie. Actually, that could be entertaining lol.

Phoenix

Another great episode. This is getting better and better.

Jerome Busca

She got some stuff wrong. Hope that this isn't the case with her movie

Joseph A Aisenberg

Right, you probably have a pussy hat, resist shirt, tortoiseshell glasses, and stream Maddow in your Prius. Trumpists are mostly simpletons but liberals are worse than born-again Christians.

Alexandru Constantin

I stopped listening after Bret, as per usual, completely misrepresented the whole Russian “hoax” thing. I continue to subscribe for those increasingly rare moments when he has a decent guest or says something interesting about books or movies.

Tremontirocks

Autocracies tend to make decisions faster than democracies. For better or worse. Worse in the long run, usually.

Tremontirocks

John Milius isn’t exactly a liberal.

Tremontirocks

“I’m not going to talk about politics anymore.” [proceeds to spend an entire episode unbearably talking about politics]

Tremontirocks

I’m in love.

Mike Novar

I would accept the right wing propaganda better if it wasn’t falsely packaged as independent thought.

David

Never mind her cult like devotion to Trump, what kind of person humiliates their parents to this extent publicly? Really disgraceful.

Scott E.

Feel like Bret has described 'Blair''s father as a closed producer who died of AIDS. Can't see that in DD - but happy to be proven wrong...

Bookth

I (heart) Beijing Biden!

Billy Schafer

As a foreigner, I find amusing reading this thread of comments. I have no business here regarding politics, but I find positive that you can observe both sides: Trump cheerleaders (although people who say Amanda is one of the best guest ever are out of their minds) and people from the left invariably complaining about Bret being Bret. Since I know Chinese people who are used to see how their country is automatically vilified no matter what they do (it's not that China hasn't done awful things, of course, but western media is on autopilot about this) I will concede that Amanda got one (essential) thing right: no matter what we think about China, they are able to do long term planning (one of the keys of their success right now) and most democratic countries are stalled in pointless bickering among political parties, never coming to terms about their differences and rarely agreeing on the basic needs of their countries (and thus, planning gets reduced to every 4 years). I think this was the only moment in the interview where I found myself nodding.

Raúl

Surprisingly insightful and intelligent guest. Bret NEEDS to get Armond White on the podcast.

Anthony Giancola

“It is what it is”

Stephen Soucy

Guest was interesting too. Glad there’s a filmmaker going after the non-woke dollar instead of just bitching about it

Christopher Hooton

Was fascinated by the ‘schoolboy at Hollywood hangout for closeted producers’ scene in The Shards - probably more so than I am by the actual murders

Christopher Hooton

Couldn’t listen to that sensationalist nut. Crazy parents? Apple doesn’t fall...

Lorcan Kavanagh

Boo hoo

BrienPiechos

This was a great episode.

BrienPiechos

This is what a podcast is all about, such a great episode. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year 💥

Knokkel knokkel

One of the best guests ever.

Alexandru Constantin

She was fucking refreshing.

Tom Davidson

Brutal, interview on this one, finger nails on a chalkboard . Loved the Otessa and Rachel episodes, we need more of those and less fawning over Newt and Gen Flynn

Gregory Meadows

People in the comments: Orange Man bad! Orange Man bad!

Christopher Webster

That was exhausting. enjoyed the shards chapter though!

jena g

2:39:07 lol

darren rockwell

You're willfully ignorant dumbass

darren rockwell

Stolen election

darren rockwell

Bret talk politics as much as you want your opinion is a valid as anyone’s. Fuck the people who get triggered. If they don’t like it they don’t have to listen.

David Willis

Another great guest! I started listening to the BEE podcast after seeing/hearing Bret on Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Greg Gutfeld. As a conservative genX woman it’s refreshing to hear other women be passionate about conservative views and not following along with the “tolerant left” group think.

Elizabeth

I seem to remember a time - a distant one - when this podcast was able to book guests who could actually talk about music and books and movies. Unfortunately, closing 2020 with a Trump propagandist is a fitting last whimper to a crap year, both in general and for the podcast. 2021 can only be better! Right?

NLJZ

Loved this guest

Klintorious

The vulnerability of coming of age was palpable. Oh must we wait 2 more weeks? As for Amanda...nope.

Kerry

Loved the new entry to The Shards. Loved the guest, even though her voice was a little loud. I have the opposite story of hers, moving from DC and coming from a political family to LA and working in tv. She's just like most rich Jewish girls in Beverley hills that she critiqued in the podcast, which I found amusing.

Harold B

I listen to about half of the Interview but had to shut it off when she began with the faux outrage over being called deplorable.

YourLateNightFriend

I’m a guy in the UK so have no dog in the fight but the wilful bad faith and hypocrisy on display was laughable, for example; Amanda was “offended” by Hillary’s “deplorables” quote, implying she said that about all conservatives (when she was referring specifically to meme-making internet trolls?) but criticised Dem’s for having the same bad-faith interpretation of Trump’s line about “rapists and murderers”. Another example is when she condemned media & government departments for not having “proof “ of collusion, yet she ignores the fact that Trump is challenging a seemingly legitimate election without any proof of evidence (stopping short of challenging the entire election herself, based on some anecdotal voter fraud). Haven’t seen her documentary but i can’t help thinking the premise is flawed; surely the mere fact that Don Jr and others actually met with Russians who offered dirt on Clinton, coupled with Russian hackers being caught trying to influence the campaign in favour of Trump (or at least away from Hillary) give ‘probable cause’ for an investigation to collusion? Correct me if I’m wrong but , didn’t Trump order key officials to obstruct justice during the Meuller investigation and not has pardoned them all? Should have had her dad on.

Reservoir Frog

really good. might have to kick up my support level a notch. thanks.

Dominic O'Malley

Hallelujah! Could not agree more.

Joseph Orlando

Decent episode. She has a lot of ideas, not very good ones, but they are there. Her willful ignorance is very telling.

Trey Karn

have a look through his Twitter feed recently -- seemed like he didnt enjoy so much (can't blame it)

David Morgan-Brown

Bret’s podcast is perhaps the only one that steps outside my bubble every once in awhile. And I like my bubble. And I dig this podcast. Always good to hear another person’s perspective. Thank goodness Biden won.

Brian Rooney

Is Terry Schaffer based on or Dominick Dunne? Closeted movie producer and well known to be friends with Alan Carr etc

Timothy

Looking forward to the next instalment of the Shards! Will not be listening to Milius. Bret unbeatable on film and art, should completely stay off politics (which he says himself doesn’t interest him)

Nicholas Vinocur

Great guest, strong energy. Throughout the years smart women are Bret’s best guests.

T

Im so hard for the shards, bretstar

Erik Jerrard

Great episode (haven’t listened to Milius and don’t think I will) Was hoping to hear what Bret thought of Finchers new film ‘Mank’ Any chance Bret will do an end of year AMA for his patron fans like he did a couple years back?

Callan Wilks

This is one of Bret’s best pieces. I’m enjoying this so much. Bret has brought back 1981 in stunning detail. Thanks.

Clive Desmond
