Book Club REVIEW 📚 What a time-capsule!

This month we read Notes from a Small Island, sent to the PO Box by Andy! 🇬🇧 I had heard this title and author mentioned before, but never read it or any of this other works.

This one in particular covers Bill's journey around the UK in the early 1990s and I found it like a 90's time capsule. I'm sure many of the references/observations about various British towns and villages no longer hold true but I still found it interesting. Some comments (and humour) might not have aged very well but I can see why it was so popular when it was published.

Overall I thought it was a fun read! As a fellow foreigner living in the UK, there were lots of bits I could relate to (and a lot of references that went over my head lol)

📮 Cheers to Andy for sending it!

🎁🎄 Book Club pick for December 🎄🎁

For December, we're reading Five Decembers by James Kestrel ❄️ This was recommended by the Butler and yes, I picked it for December solely because December is in the title lol This starts off in 1941 with a murder... who knows where it ends up!

📕 What is Book Club?

My goal is to read more - so I started Book Club! Each month, I’ll post what I’m reading and you are welcome to join in 📚 Whether you want to read or listen, it's totally up to you! At the end of the month, we’ll share our thoughts on the book (no spoilers in case you're still reading/listening).

You can try and read each book, or pick and choose month-to-month, or not! It’s totally up to you.

Happy reading!

Comments

In his follow up, The Road to Little Dribbling, he starts with taking his citizenship test in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

Keith Escott

Perhaps no but having been Chancellor of Durham University and receiving an OBE in 2014 amongst many other awards after his citizenship. A foreigner? I have many of his books. Could I suggest you read Notes from a Big Country obviously about the U.S.A. Anyway keep up the good work

Thanks Alanna! Glad you enjoyed it! 😊

Andy Houghton

A genuine laugh out loud book in places. He travelled this journey again a few years ago and wrote a follow up. His books about growing up are really good too.

Adam Clark

His science book A history of nearly everything is very good as are his books on language

Simon

I don’t think he had citizenship when he wrote this one

Adventures and Naps

Bill Bryson isn't a foreigner in the U.K. he is a American/British citizen
