For September's Book Club, I'm reading: The Suspicions of Mr Whicher Or The Murder At Road Hill House (you can buy it here if you're interested in reading it, too). This book was sent to the PO Box from Ian, so thank you kindly!
"It is a summer's night in 1860. In an elegant detached Georgian house in the village of Road, Wiltshire, all is quiet. Behind shuttered windows the Kent family lies sound asleep. At some point after midnight a dog barks. The family wakes the next morning to a horrific discovery: an unimaginably gruesome murder has taken place in their home."
I've started this one a bit early since I finished August's book so quickly - and let me just say, this one is difficult but very interesting. It recounts a real-life murder in 1860 using all real-life documents, reports, articles, etc. This means it reads very factual with a LOT of detail, which can be hard to process at times. It's a difficult book to read before bed if you're tired.
"A true story that inspired a generation of writers such as Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle, this has all the hallmarks of the classic murder mystery - a body; a detective; a country house steeped in secrets. In The Suspicions of Mr Whicher Kate Summerscale untangles the facts behind this notorious case, bringing it back to vivid, extraordinary life."
It's also really interesting to see how this case/investigation directly influenced so much crime writing!
If you are interested in historical crime non-fiction, I'd definitely recommend giving it a go! It really gives a feel of what the time period was like and how the real investigation took place - can't wait to finish it this month!
Happy reading!
