that one time I cried at Walmart

Gather round! Another Walmart Story

(For those of you who don't know, I worked at Walmart for 2 months in-between first and second year of college - I needed that money!)

I was working a LOT that summer, trying to get as many hours as I could. This particular day was a long one, I wasn't feeling well and I had been working since 7am. Also at Walmart, all cashiers stand for their shifts because it's a cruel world in N. America.

I had a guy come to my check-out, I scan AND bag this stuff as required, standing on my swollen feet. He had picked out some random bagels from the bakery, which we have to count and manually plug into the register. I'm counting them, he says "there's 6." I'm like "yep, I counted 6, too!"  We still have to count them either way, customer are always wrong.

He BLOWS UP that I counted his bagels. "DIDN'T YOU HEAR ME? I SAID 6! WHAT, YOU THINK I'M GOING TO STEAL BAGELS? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU!"

Oh honey.

I'm trying not to bawl but the tears are welling. It's been a day.

He pays and leaves, then 2 teenagers girls come to my register to buy craft stuff (I don't know why I still remember that). I was probably 19 and they looked about 16.

THEY WERE SO KIND.

"I'm so sorry that guy yelled at you - he had no right. He was so rude. You're doing such a great job, don't let him get to you. I hope you have a great rest of your shift!"

It's so funny how little acts of kindness can go such a long way!

You're absolutely right! Plus they're the essential ones - been working through the pandemic while most of us are at home!

OH my goodness!! That poor girl. Glad to hear that people helped - there's always good people around but unfortunately it seems that the bad ones are often louder!

Adventures and Naps

I was in Tesco in March Cambridgeshire before the lock down and a guy went mad at a young girl on the checkout. She said he could only have two if something .Luckily two guys next to me drab him as he was going after the girl .They had to hold him down until the police arrived. The girl was crying. . The young girl could be affected by this for the rest of her life..You see people talking on there phones paying no attention to the cashier. It mite not the Job you would choose but these are still human after all. A smile a bit of interaction goes a long way to make the day a good one ..None of us go work to be given a hard time ..If you suffer for anxiety this must a tough. People should bear this mind when shopping. .

Would be interesting to see if he would do the same with an older employee.

I always thank the employees at Walmart - - there's always the possibility that you might need a job there someday!

William Seabrook

Hahaha can I adopt you? My daughter has never said that 😂😂

Andy Mlynek

I bet he had bagels in his pockets!

Adventures and Naps

Oh man I bet you've got some great Zellers stories! I miss that weird place!

Adventures and Naps

You're absolutely right!!

You learned a vital life lesson on that day. For every git in the world there are 2 nice people! At least I hope that's true!! A shout out to all the kind people in this world 🌝

Andy Mlynek

I really can`t understand people being like that, deserve to be slung out and banned from the store.

Graham Lavers

Yeh retail customers are shit. I worked 4 years at Zellers and 3 months at Sobey's.

Brett Carruthers

Nice people do exist in this world, sometimes when you least expect to find them.

Steve Hale

That's awful!! I had a similar experience when volunteering at my school for open day, things are already stressful enough when you're trying to deal with the public and do your job without people screaming in your face. Anywho, I know it was a long time ago but sorry that you had to experience that!!

Aaron Conway

People who scream and yell like that usually have something to hide...

Steve Mikre

I never understand why some people are assholes to cashiers - they're just trying to do their jobs and whatever is making you upset, 99.999% of the time it wasn't the cashier's doing... /smh Did you pick that photo because it has _seven_ bagels? 8^P
