I used to hate running too, but at some point the hate stopped and the love started!

David Powell

I absolutely agree! I always feel better after a run. I tend to listen to podcasts when running, too, if music isn't enough to keep me distracted by how much I hate running lol

Adventures and Naps

I started running about 20 years ago and I'm still no good at it, but it's definitely been good for my mental health. When I run my mind can't stay focused on worries and anxieties for long, because running isn't easy, it's bloody hard work. Having these moments when my mind is quiet is a great stress reliever. The other benefit there are so many goals you can set yourself whilst running to give yourself a little win every day: Beat that split time, pace yourself better, attack that hill or just run that little bit further before having to stop to catch your breath. If you find yourself getting bored whilst running, then my advice is listen to audio books/radio plays whilst running. They are better than music, because they don't force you into any particular running rhythm/speed (unlike music).

Great list - may I add to it - do some light gardening. Even just pulling a few weeds and you can enjoy the look every day. Walk - don't run there's lots to see and hear. Cicadas in the day and frogs at night! Read a good travel book - especially find one about long distance walking in England. Period music- Did you grow up with Sharon, Lois and Bram? My kids did and it improved their lives over the usual tv shows. Also Fred Rogers who originally started on tv in Canada. Thank you!!

William Seabrook

I think that older friends can be valuable. They've often been through similar (or worse) and have experience/perspective. Much better than anyone who might be living a completely fulfilled, stress free 'Richard Curtis movie' lifestyle and come out with "you'll be fine" or my favourite "bat you're gawjus babes".

David O

Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it

Adventures and Naps

Music is absolutely a big one for me, too!!

Adventures and Naps

I've had depression since I was a kid. Out of all the things doctors, etc... have told me over the years, I prefer music and/or distraction. It sounds odd and to some very sad (pathetic) but I enjoy cleaning cars to relax. It's just me and the car, me removing the dirt, etc... in the safest way possible and restoring the car to as new or nearly new as possible means I don't think about other things. I also get a great sense of achievement when my colleague or neighbour comes back for their car and says, 'it looks cleaner than when I bought it!'. If not that, then music from when I was a kid in secondary school/high school. Music can transport you to any moment in time, it's truly amazing.

This show is good for a few laughs, not much else on tv at the moment. The Hard Quiz from Australia https://ok.ru/video/c3049429

Wayne Thurston

Thanks, you made me feel better, somehow :)

PaulDeBaene

How do I cope? Alanna videos twice a week - especially if they involve rocking and butterflies :-) Thank you, Alanna

David Young

Really interesting to hear what methods you use to cope with everything. I agree with most wholeheartedly (and the others I have never done so I can't judge). For me the Exercise is the biggest one, Walking is definitely keeping me as close to sane as I ever get! I also think it is really important to have at least one thing a day that you enjoy and look forward too. I like to keep that to late in the day as that always buoys my spirits to know I have that to come for most of the day. Little things can make a big difference to MH so never discount them. I'd like to say Thanks because A&N has been one of those things for me whether it's YT, Patreon, Twitch or Discord they all have helped me a lot and are helping me to survive at the moment so it's really nice to hear that Twitch is helping you too. I'm definitely getting the impression Animal Crossing should be available on Prescription😊. Thanks as always and Keep yourself well.

Ar558a

Thank you the video Alanna. I've been struggling too and thanks for A+N helping

Didgeridoo

Thanks for the advice bud, hope you're doing alright

Aaron Conway

Just watching you rock is very soothing. Thanks!

Dr Philip J Naylor

Just ordered my junk food, sat down to watch a video till it gets delivered and ended up watching a rant about fast food. Thank you so much! πŸ˜‰ But you have a point, I have put on at least 10 pounds during the lock down. Stress eating, alcohol and not enough exercise are a bad combination. But you look quite relaxed in your rocking chair, birds chirping, cicadas screaming, butterflies attacking you. Be safe and drink enough water! 😊

Holger Steinwedel

Hi, Alanna, that was a great video. Fear not I drink three bottles of water as a minimum every day and apart from the fact that I spend most of the day in the bathroom all is fine. Can't swear that I always eat well, fast food delivery is too easy in the UK. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your visa appointment please make sure you get there in plenty of time even if you have to wait outside for an hour. Alanna, we are all thinking of you for what you're going through and we are all here for you, big cyber hugs from all your Patreon family. I'll now go and put some comments on Discord because if a thing is worth saying once it's worth saying twice. Looking forward to your next video soon.

Stephen Parker

Well this has just made me feel out of step with the rest of the world now. Someone i used to know said they saw me as a yellow balloon just bobbing along on my own way, happy to do that alone. It was very true too. I have never needed friends and consequently have never had any. I don't understand the need to some people have to share their time with other people. I am very settled and happy with myself and this pandemic hasn't really made any difference to my life as i have been working throughout. One difference in my life has been going plant based in my diet due to high cholesterol. That and walking more has made a notable difference physically which has been good. I very rarely drink just water as i live on coffee. I have always only slept for a maximum of 6 hours, usually less, and never had a problem with that. I just feel incredibly lucky to be the way i am, i don't have any stress or anxiety to deal with and can let go of any negative things. I know you have more stress than usual to deal with Alanna but i am glad you are finding ways to deal with it. We all have to find our own ways to deal with life. I am glad too that the visa situation is getting moving, even though that may take time to get through the backlog. I am sure you will be fine with the process. Stay calm and be happy.

Adam Clark

Thanks for this Alanna :) as you know I've been having a rough time this week, so feel like this vid has come at the right time haha. I will certainly try to do more of these....Irn Bru counts as water, right??

Kenny Simpson

It's becoming COVID 19KG

Wayne Thurston

Alanna what a great video with lots of great tips that we should ALL try and take on board for ourselves. I started walking everyday in June and walked 216 miles throughout the month by myself. Unfortunately I haven't been able to keep it up, as those around me now don't like going for walks with me. I really must up my water intake. Keeping you in my prayers, that's how I meditate. But keeping you and your family very much in my thoughts and prayers. With regards to your visa application process, know that we are with you in it. I'm sure you will be fine at the Biometric part. Totally understand the stress related to it , especially if you are an anxious person. You take care. You are such a blessing to so many without necessarily realising it. πŸ˜‰πŸŒŸ

Don Swanson

Bloody hell, this video was amazingly timely... You're right, the last week or so has been appalling. It good to know it's not just me, not that I'd wish shit times on anyone! You have some excellent points there, we can all learn to be better to ourselves. Thank you for such a positive message for everyone!! Stay strong, Alanna... πŸ’œ

SaharaGadge .

Such a beautiful video. Thanks for sharing. I loved your Ted talk, it was funny, deep, and very lovely. "I have been blessed on this day" hahaha. What a line that was. Absolutely amazing lol. Glad you're doing OK. And I'm glad you're enjoying TLOU.P2. It would be interesting to know where you're up to with it. I think I finished it in about 4 maybe 5 days haha. (Slightly nerdy I know lol) Anyway I'm glad you're OK and I hope you enjoy your weekend.

I find cooking is good for stress relief, something about making something from natural ingredients, and making something that is greater than the sum of it's parts. It is very useful being a chef and still finding cooking to be relaxing... πŸ‘ Also gardening is a great healer, I was in a very dark place 3-4 years ago and gardening was one of the things that I could attribute to getting my life back. I did promise myself I'd start jogging, I even bought an arm band thing for my phone, it is still unused after a year πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ I'm sure I'll get round to it at some point. I used to go to bed at 9pm regularly and wake up at 6am all the time, I now work nights so bad times, but it's just one of those things. Always good to stop and take stock of what the good and bad influences on your life are and adjust as necessary πŸ€—

Tom Hardie

Thank you Alanna, things have been very rough, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds your videos very helpful in coping with it all. Some of your advice I am already following, other parts I still need to work on. Thank you. I'm going to go and drink some water now.

Cut out caffeine. As someone who suffers with anxiety problems, cutting out caffeine can help immensely with mental health. Admittedly in my case I can have anywhere between 4-8 cups of coffee a day. But going decaf has helped alleviate the paranoia, the feeling of being on edge all the time. Makes sense really since energy drinks and caffeine work by triggering fight or flight and pumping adrenaline into the system. I'm not completely caffeine free, I still drink Tea and fizzy drinks, but that still seriously limits my caffeine intake. I can't describe how different I feel, how "normal" I feel just by cutting that crap out. On the meditation side, yeah, meditation is a dick when you can't shut your brain up. But I would suggest trying binaural beats or even white noise. I would stay away from guided meditation, because it forces to listen and pay attention which is where anxiety can get in the way. Where as, at least in my case, binaural beats drown out the voices, they are designed to promote specific brain wave patterns and I find them way better for meditation than guided stuff. Sleep routine is really important and I don't mean the time you go to sleep, it's also about what you do before sleep. Personally I find reading or watching TV in bed for an hour a good way to calm down, but in those cases where I am gaming and I go past my time I'm screwed. Normally I start watching tv no later than 10pm bed between 11>11:30pm. But if I have a new game and end up going to bed at 11 straight from gaming, I find I lay in bed for 90+ minutes. So calming the brain with something mundane prior to actually going to bed is a huge thing for me.

Keep meaning to try meditation, keep putting it off 😬 stay sane bud 🀞 your biometrics goes well πŸ’œ
