Now that it's a comfort/background noise show for me, it's no longer on Netflix, and that is just unfair and always how it goes for me when I finally hop on a pop culture train. Lol. eta - I recently learned the the founder of Lulu Lemon was just a racist white guy who thought it'd be a funny joke to make a name of a company that was hard to pronounce for Asian people (I was not aware that he was targeting specifically Japanese people). I was absolutely disgusted. I've had problems with LuluLemon for a while now (as a white Yoga instructor trying to be mindful of the ways Yoga is misappropriated, and LuluLemon basically just uses Yoga to market it's products), so when I heard about this I was like "ok, well at least now I know for sure that they suck"

Technically, they're still connected by land because the southern section of Panama touches South America, but there's a pretty big canal separating the 2 pieces of Panama. Which is also the origin of a famous palindrome. Coincidence? Yes.

2024-04-07 14:07:39 +0000 UTCLinguistic tangent: Human brains are amazing at figuring out how to use the least amount of energy required to do things, and as we grow up with a language we quickly learn which parts of language we need to be able to tell apart from finer details and which we don't need to spend that much energy on (for example, some languages have fewer vowel sounds than others, so the brain doesn't use that much energy thinking about tiny acoustic differences in vowel sounds, which can make it harder to distinguish between vowels when learning a language that has a lot more vowel sounds and thus less acoustic difference between them). This is all to say that japanese only has one liquid phoneme where english has two and the realisation of that phoneme also happens to be sort of a middleground between those two which doesn't make the distinction easier, but also that's just the brain being efficient. If you only have to deal with one liquid phoneme in your day to day life, your brain isn't going to spend needless energy on minute differences it's not going to use, but also like Jordan said, it's a profiency thing, basically teaching your brain: Hey you need to pay closer attention to these sounds now.
