Chapter 60

"If he's really the father and cares for the kid, he should know better than to rob an important vessel containing a high class person." Naruto said impatiently, wanting nothing more than to draw his rifle and get the job done himself.
They'd both been laying in the mud and trying to ignore the biting of insects for hours, watching and waiting for the moment where their bounty came out to perform his daily rituals of praying out in the open every morning.
Normally, he'd have done this himself but the distance from where he and Kara were required someone with a sharper eye than his so as not to get the wrong person. That and this was how they practiced focusing and accuracy with her heat vision.
The moment has finally come but their target had chosen to bring his child along with him this time, triggering another one of Kara's hesitation fits. Normally, he'd be all for killing them both but Kara wouldn't stop nagging him for even suggesting that.
The only good aspect of this was that they only needed a picture of his corpse so it would be easy to pose as law enforcement to take that. No need to traumatize the child further by the sight of two strangers cutting off their father's head.
"What you don't seem to get, Kara, that his bounty, while not all that high, is high enough to attract many desperate bounty hunters. Bounty hunters willing to kill not just him, but the child and everyone else in this vicinity just to be sure that they got their target."
"So at least take comfort in knowing that while you're possibly condemning one child, you're probably saving dozens of people in return. By the nine, we've been doing this for years." He said.
Kara stayed silent for a moment before closing one eye and out of the open one, a scorching beam of solar energy shot out, zipping through the air and passing through the Korugarian's head. She let out a breath as she watched the body crumble.
Naruto clapped his hands together and got up. "Whew, that went well. Come on, Kara. Let's get our bounty."
Kara followed him, wiping off the mud on her as best as she could and they began their trek down to the small settlement.
"Hey Naruto, have you considered slowing down a bit?" She asked. Naruto turned to her, confused. "You know, not taking job after job and just spending time resting."
"Not really, no. I get rest when I don't get any calls, don't I?" He chuckled, getting Kara to frown at him.
"No, I mean actually taking time away from everything. Like a vacation." She explained
"Oh. I've never really felt the need for a vacation. Why spend time doing nothing when you can spend it doing something more productive?" Naruto shrugged.
"Well I do." Kara said. "And we're going to be taking one. Right after we deliver this bounty."
Naruto laughed. "You can take time off if you want, you know. We don't always have to go around together."
Kara scoffed. "As you are right now? There's every chance you'll meet someone or many people you can't take on by yourself."
She wasn't lying. Apparently, travelling with a Kryptonian fetched yourself the attention of multiple powers, both good and bad.
Apokoliptians, Psions, bounty hunters, nobles looking to add a Kryptonian to their harem, people looking to create a new breed with a Kryptonian, mystics who spouted shit about her having to go to Earth for the greater good and many other things he never imagined experiencing in his lifetime. Come to think of it, it was a miracle he wasn't dead yet.
The last time they'd fought together, she'd taken on an Apokoliptian in a battle that had destroyed multiple planets. A battle he'd been forced to eventually flee so as not to be killed. He was powerful enough to wipe out a moon, sure, but he didn't like the chances of being caught in the crossfire of two people capable of destroying worlds with a punch.
Don't blame him. It had left him more than dumbstruck to see Kara fire beams from her eyes powerful enough to destroy a planet. That had been picked up by multiple governments who'd given her the alias Worldburner.
The defeated Apokoliptian had spoken something about another Kryptonian on earth, this one male doing the same to him, much to Kara's surprise. He'd also told her the male was on Earth, acting as a defender. When Kara had rejoined him, the first thing she'd done was ask if they could go to Earth.
