Redox State Balance
Added 2023-08-09 01:20:21 +0000 UTC
Redox state imbalance refers to an imbalance in the equilibrium between oxidation and reduction reactions within a cell or organism. In simpler terms, it's an imbalance between the production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other reactive molecules.
In biological systems, oxidation and reduction (redox) reactions involve the transfer of electrons. Oxidation is the loss of electrons, while reduction is the gain of electrons.
Under normal circumstances, there's a balance between the production of ROS and the capacity of the body's antioxidant defenses to counteract them. However, various factors, such as environmental stressors, disease, or aging, can disrupt this balance, leading to a state where ROS levels are too high, causing oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress can damage proteins, lipids, and DNA within cells. Over time, this can contribute to a range of health issues, including inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer.
