2022-12-15 01:50:36 +0000 UTCI'm really glad you caught that Sylvia was wearing the rings! It's a hilarious but small detail, and a lot of people missed it. Something to add to what you were talking about at the end: I used to be a big Morning Musume fan many years ago, and through that I found out a lot more about the Japanese Idol phenomena. One thing that the idols in those groups (Morning Musume, yes, but most other idol groups as well, like AKB48) are not allowed to do is have boyfriends. At least publically. They have to have an image where they're single and/or 'available'. This allows their fans (who are predominantly male) to fantasize about dating said idol, no matter how improbable it would be. It's an almost subliminal part of the marketing, and there can be some severe punishment if the girls are caught with whomever they're seeing. I remember that one AKB48 girl who shaved her head in apology for being caught spending the night at her boyfriend's place. It's really extreme and one of the reasons I lost interest. From that standpoint, someone that obsessed with 'movie starlets', which is a clear stand in for Japanese idols, is probably thinking about dating them (not necessarily sexual) on some level. This may be the mindset the writer was going for, as his intended audience is Japanese, and what got baked into the wife's reaction.
