The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) Full Reaction

I just watched this for the first time along with you. I knew some of the songs and moments already from pop culture osmosis, but I can say for sure I liked it more than I thought I would all put together. I wish I could also say I got as invested as you did though. It was mostly just a lark for me.

I love this movie, it's literally perfect in every way. All good musicals have a healthy blend of fun and deep sadness - this one doesn't make me cry, but every time I watch Falsettos I'm a mess.

this is beautiful!!

I first saw this in the early 1990s at an outdoor, nighttime showing near the water fountain in front of the student union building at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The students would yell things whenever they saw Janet or Brad... I think rice was thrown during the wedding. Also, when one of the characters said "... I propose a toast..." a couple of people winged bread at the screen. I was pretty sheltered and somewhat closed off to the possibilities during my time in college and have since become somewhat more "liberal" in my viewpoints. As to the movie, I don't think it awakened much in me that was greatly life-changing... then again, I can't quite remember if this was before or during a nine-month whirlwind dalliance with a freshman redhead from Massachusetts that had more experience (yes, that kind) than I did. My thanks to Cass for this reaction, the deeper emotional depth of Frankenfurter's character had not occurred to me until I was today years old. Cheers.

I was a senior in High School when Rocky Horror came to a small backstreet theater a couple of miles out of town for a week of midnight showings. They took out an ad in the little indie weekly rag, because the regular newspaper wouldn't carry it. On the Friday before the first Saturday night midnight showing, there was an announcement at school that students were NOT to go see it. The local church pastor guy, who was leading an anti-gay crusade, which he did several times over the years, was on the news threatening to protest the theater, (but never showed up). This was I guess 1982, and it had never been shown in regular big theater in the state, so it was funny to see people there all looking at each other, ready for a forbidden experience. I was eighteen and ready (I thought), but I was not ready for how great it was. I tell you it made me hopeful that something like that could be made, much less shown publicly, and I thought it was a sign that all those crazy moral panics were a thing of the past.

The trouble with watching Rocky Horror by yourself at home is that you lose the fun of seeing it at a midnight show with an audience-participation crowd who have seen it a million times before. Try to get out to see it that way if you can, to get the full experience! If that's not possible, there is an "Audience Participation" soundtrack album that you can listen to while watching the movie, to hear the crowd jokes and trolls. Should be able to just sync it up and play the "Audience Participation" audio from Spotify while watching the movie on mute (the audio starts first...).
