You're right, it doesn't make sense that the First would bring Angel back to life and then be fine with Angel killing himself. I'd like to point out though that the episode never confirms that the First actually did bring Angel back. Also, I don't see season 2 as the end of Angel's story arc. In fact, I see it as a beginning. Angel did terrible things without a soul (which we are reminded of in the flashbacks this episode) and he will always be haunted by them.

2023-12-13 17:43:16 +0000 UTCThis for me is another weak episode, another to add to the pile along with episode 2, at least for the part concerning Angel. The flashbacks are … meh. What's the point? Show us that Angelus was a sadistic, psychopathic, serial killer? I already got it in season 2 with “Passion”. Remind it to Angel? I guess he already knows at this point. Then I find the whole First Evil part trying to explain why he returned Angel rather confusing, unconvincing, if not nonsensical. As the producers had decided to bring Angel back confident they would find a good reason as to how and why later, but when the time came they still hadn't found one and this was the best they could come up with at the last moment. As you already said more than once in the past, Angel's story arc reached its natural conclusion at the end of season 2, and his return in this season feels a little forced, and I couldn't agree more. Don't get me wrong, his presence in this season brought some really good episodes, but you can't help but feel like they only brought him back because the network put the possibility of a spinoff on the table.
