'Lust For Life' by Lana Del Rey Full Reaction

'Lust For Life' by Lana Del Rey Full Reaction

God Bless America is written in a political context, including referenced of women’s march in Washington. The guns are kinda satire, which is very common in her music. The singer at Coachella is Father John Misty, and he’s an amazing songwriter and performer, really close to Lana as his wife Emma Tilman :)

A little late to this but omg! nfr next!! i don't like hyping albums up but nfr has always been my fave, and has my fave song by her on it. i don't know if you're watching interviews too, i think i remember you saying something about maybe doing some if they're recommended when you did btd but she did a lot of interesting interviews during the nfr era, she definitely seems at her most carefree/comfortable in that era and i adore her interviews! like the one she did with KROQ and 104.3 MYfm all those radio shows are super fun!

I have basically the same feelings about this album as you. While there are songs on here that I absolutely love and listen to all the time, there are some I just don’t love. I can appreciate them and their message, but it’s just not an everyday kind of song. And I’m not putting those in playlists.

I think you’re reaction is like the exact general consensus her fans have on it. It’s my least favorite. But I still don’t think she has one bad album. I’m so excited for the next 4 album reactions because all 4 are her at her best in terms of writing. And the sound of the next 4 are my personal preferences and I definitely think you’ll relate way more to those albums

For me this is her “weakest” album, but there’s still songs that I absolutely love on it. And I don’t dislike any of the songs either, I just like other albums better. I think you will enjoy NFR a lotttt more though.

Yes, those three were all about politics. I think God Bless America was very much a response to the general misogyny of the President and the fact that he was *elected* despite Access Hollywood etc. EDIT- It's out of nowhere when consumed in 2023 with no context, but in 2017 it made sense because we were living it. It such an intense time that I don't think Lana could help bringing in the wider reality of the world into her music.

I love everything Lana does but if I had to pick a least favourite album of hers it would be this one. There is not one song that I actively dislike, I like them, but I definitely listen to a lot of the songs on this album much less than her others. There are a number of songs on here that I adore and revisit over and over, and others that I rarely ever listen to. So I totally understand your reaction Cass. For me I think it’s just the nature of the production and some of the genre elements of this album that I find hard to connect with personally as they are less to my taste. But I get what she’s doing and saying with this album and it is a pivotal turning point in her career and does mark a shift and growth in her as a person and artist. On a side note - she wrote ‘Love’ for and about her fans which is why she is mostly removed from the lyrics until the end.

I dunno, I think in 'In My Feelings', she seems really very angry! "If you were me, and I was you, I'd get out of my way. Get that cigarette smoke out of my face!" ... It's funny, Tomorrow Never Came is theoretically a sad song, but it's really a happy song because she's singing with Sean and she loves it!

Will

I think this album marks a change in that she's singing more often from her real point of view than from the point of view of 'characters'. I think Groupie Love is probably from an imaginary point of view, but it is a sweet song, yes!

Cass posted this just when I was on my way to work. 😂

Cass, when you say you are curious about what the next album is gonna sound like…. The next album is her best album! Okay I get it’s subjective and everyone has their favorite… but for real NFR is so good. Nothing tops it

As well as being a fun little thing, I really think it gives a sense of her state of mind at the time she made the album (2016/2017, when a certain individual was throwing his weight around on the world stage and scaring a lot of us). Most Lana fans saw this in advance of listening to the album (and had heard the singles from it), so were prepared for something a little different. The way I see it, she made a conscious decision to start to try to put a bit more positive energy into the world with her music.

Here's a transcript of the Lust For Life album trailer (which, again, I really recommend that you watch!) - Lana: "You know, in this town an artist really needs a lot of space when they're trying to create something special. A place to cultivate a world of their own, far away from the real world that's around them. Luckily for me, I live right inside the middle of the 'H' of the Hollywood sign, and this is how I spent most of my nights: perched high above the chaos that swirls within the City of Angels below. Now don't get me wrong, I love to dip my toe into the muck and the mires of the city every now and then, especially on Tuesdays. But truthfully, when I'm in the middle of making a record - especially now, when the world is in the middle of such a tumultuous period - I find I really need to take the space for myself, far away from real life to consider what my contribution to the world should be in these dark times. So each morning I have the luxury of asking myself, "What shall I cook up for the kids today? Something with a little spice? Something with a little bitterness but is ultimately sweet? Or shall I take the day off and turn down the fire, and just take a moment to send my love to them over the ether?" Because sometimes just being pure of heart, and having good intentions, and letting them be known is the most worthy contribution an artist can make. So, even though these times can feel a little bit crazy, they're not so very different from what other generations have experienced at one time or another before. Amidst all the uncertainty, and as we transition out of one era into another one, there's no place I'd rather be than smack-dab in the middle of 'Hollyweird' making this record for you. Because you and the music, and this place are my love, my light, and my lust for life."

Will

OMG. Can’t wait to watch this when I’m done working. Also, NFR next. You’re not ready.

I really wish she also mentioned Amy and Whitney in the album version. :( Hearing Get Free live is one of the most amazing things I ever witnessed.

Coachella - Woodstock In My Mind is partially about the tensions between the US and North Korea in 2016 that were stirred up by Tr*mp. That whole trio of songs (Coachella, God Bless America and When The World Was At War We Kept Dancing) are very much a comment on the political climate at the time. If you look at them from a political pov instead of a Lana pov they are very interesting.

Cherry SHOULD be your personality for the next month or for however long you want

The first half of the album to me is about reflecting on Love and the second half of the album is about reflecting on life. White mustang sounds like she is saying “Why am I staying” Heroin is about a past boyfriend that died from a heroin overdose I think. In get free the bit where she say for… and for… In live performances she sings “For Amy (Winehouse) and for Whitney (Houston)”

So excited for NFR!!
