Step 1: Conversation- the commissioner wanted to have their character acting out a pose where "you want them but you can't have them" kind of pose, using a picture of Rauru as reference where their body language was really closed off. So adapting it for the character, my ideas was to make it so the body language was closed off but also he's staring you down daring you to try something, while also revealing parts of his body! A dangerous dance kind of thing!
Step 2: Sketch- Actually accomplishing this is so much in the gaze and all of the flourishes of the individual's character! Lots of character acting going on here! I love it! Which is a good sign! "Find a way to fall in love with what you're doing!" mixed with "Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love love, that is the soul of genius." Editor's note: I don't have an editor. Also, I just wanted to clarify that I don't consider my work genius. I was just making a statement about how my best work is typically that which I've found a way to fall in love with!
Step 3: Colors and values- these are your mood makers. Form gets you body language and everything fine enough but if you want to build an atmosphere, color and light is your best friend. Here I decided to use under lighting to bump up the intimidation factor!
Step 4: Colors 2, Details, and Drawing Focus- Added in all of the details to differentiate between textures of the body and hair and background, etc! I also used obscuring brush strokes to play with edge hardness to keep your eye not on the edge of the figure but down the center. And as always I just use the colors to express both myself and what the commissioner wants. A much more intimidating atmosphere!
