Stretching & Toning Paper

UPDATE: Temporary workaround is sorted. The video is hosted through youtube for now and is playable on mobile or desktop.

Here is the latest edition of my stretching videos- no it's not a yoga class ;)

This on includes instructions on how to tone your paper with an ink wash as well.

The lesson notes are attached which contains a materials list.

This is related to the upcoming advanced cast drawing lesson (October 1st)

Stretching & Toning Paper

Comments

I usually stretch 16 x 20 👌

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi' new to the channel. Is the paper 16x20 stretched over a smaller panel maybe 12X16? BYW those drawings on the wall are beautiful. Cheers

Ron

I like the 16x20

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Stephen, what size would you recommend for a portrait including neck and outline of blouse, shirt to shoulder area. Is 14"x18" preferred or 16" x 20" trying to figure out what size of stone hedge would fit or the proper canvas size. I was trained to use 14x18 but maybe 16x20 would give me more breathing room.

Joe Salazar

I use the 7/8 panels.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hello Stephan, Thank you for sharing the stretched stone hedge over Cradled Wood panel. How deep should the panel be. There are various sizes in thickness, 1-1/2", 2", 7/8" deep?

Joe Salazar

Happy to help, Ellie ;)

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen, just wanted to say thank you so much for this tutorial. This is my first time stretching paper and it worked surprisingly well. Can't wait to start working on it!

Elena

I haven't tried before but I will assume the effect is similar.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hey Stephen, can I use watercolor instead of ink?

Naomi G

Haven't tried, but it should work theoretically.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Excellent very clear. Would you use the same technique for oil paper for oil painting ?

Paul ward

Don't know- I haven't heard any update lately...

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Drawings always should be under glass. I haven't found an exception to that rule yet.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

That can work as well.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

It should work, but a set of stretcher bars without a canvas on would probably work better.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Sipmly put, until it is dry. It can take a couple of hours or nmore depending on the atmospheric conditions.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen can you clarify - when you have stretched the paper how dry does it need to be before washing with ink? I ended up waiting over an hour and my paper was still damp to the touch and, I discovered, quite wet still on the back side touching the panel. When I started the toning I think the paper must have been too wet as the ink appears to have stained a very irregular pattern this looks cool — like a concrete, but not suitable for this project. I’ll post it in Discord so you can see it but let me know here for others - how long to wait before toning - how dry?

Louise Notley (lulunot1)

Hello Stephen. Greetings from Czech Republic. Thank you for this project, I´m super thrilled to take a part - the white chalk and the graphite looks so exciting!! I have a question... Do you think I can stretch a paper onto a already stretched canvas, prepared as if I was going to make an oil painting? I haven´t suceeded yet in buying the wooden block that you are using. I guess the canvas will support the paper nicely and I plan to staple the paper just the way you showed, but maybe there are some tricky points that I overlooked. Thank you again, learning the drawing with you makes my life a lot happier and I am gaining a lot of new confidence out of it. Toybox

Is it ok to just use a pre-made toned paper by Stonehenge instead? Don’t think I’ll be able to stretch it given myself weak wrists!

Kamlika Chandla

Hi Stephen, I can't make it to the live broadcast :( and I have a question. How do you frame drawings at the end ? Under glass as watercolor? Or there is a better way of showing your work?

Victoria

Did the company (was it Raymar). Give up on selling the panels with Stonehenge paper attached that you loved so much. Have heard nothing more about it.

Phyllis Riley

I usually use blick.com

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Depends. Usually if I have to ship the artwork I will take it off the panel. If I am framing it myself I will usually leave it on.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. Trust you are well. Do you leave your drawings on the stretched panel to sell or do you remove them and frame them before you sell them? Regards Sonica

Sonica Odendaal

Do you have a fave source for the panels? They are quite expensive.

Phyllis Riley

lol!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Stonehenge is a drawing/printmaking paper.

April

So that's Watercolour Paper?

Peta Williams

at the Russian Academy in St Petersburg I learned to do this with “sauce”, which was scraped from the stick and mixed with water. Sauce is a mixture of clay and pigment or carbon. The beauty of this is that it is eraseable, so you can lift out your whites with an eraser. I think that in the USA it is made by Yarka. We also used foam rollers to even out the tone. The foam was pilfered from streetcar seats since there wasnt a store that you could buy it from. Good times!

April

my goodness you’re tall!!!

Phyllis Riley

Ah got the other one now this one says not exist.n frustrated but will keep workin on it.

Phyllis Riley

Pretty much the same on both sides.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen. Is there a particular side of the Stonehenge paper we should be drawing on? There does seem to be subtle differences in them. Thank you!

Dave Emerson

Says does not exist.

Phyllis Riley

Cool.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

The attachment opens OK though.

Lynda Backman

Fixed.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Stephen Bauman Artwork
