Thanks so very much for your detailed feedback. To clarify: the cabinet is divided into National Stewardship, American Vitality, and Social Affairs. National Stewardship handles defense, state, justice, homeland security, and treasury and are considered the senior cabinet. The Continuity of the Executive Act limited the cabinet successors to just those five (and the designated survivor was eliminated. Instead the surviving presidents are listed in a preferred order by the sitting president to take over in the event the line of succession is exhausted, to act as acting president for the duration of whatever crisis happened and then setting up elections for the next actual president). In this case, Greene had two of his political powerbase on National Stewardship (Chase Cortez and Hal Broker), so the vote was a formality, he had the political power to back his move. Greene was too powerful for Liz to not give a place at the table, and could normally keep in line, but her powerbase was gutted by the terrorist attack. It's the reason she made SecDef Braun her National Security Advisor, he's the only expert on the topic she is sure wouldn't secretly be on Greene's side too. Because of the extra workload, the Deputy Secretary of Defense took over some of Braun's duties, and so Greene exploited the fuzziness to get her to pass orders to INDOPACOM in the department's name. I hope that clarifies things. :-)

I very much enjoyed this section, showing how things began to spiral out of control. I liked the one thing leading to another issues throughout it. It gives me shades of ‘The Sum of All Fears’ my favorite of the Jack Ryan novels. Green is such a self-righteous asshole and believable one at that. He’ll be lecturing on how he had to do what he did, right as the H-Bomb detonates behind him just like in the nightmare. I was curious if he was going to collapse upon learning what his interference did, but nope, double-downed on it…wow what an asshole. I’ll admit I found the rest of the Cabinet? National Security Council? Endorsing Green as ‘Acting President’ a bit quick. Especially given the outright reference to Haig there. Historically, as I understand it, Alexander Haig’s infamous ‘I am in command’ backfired pretty hard. With people inside the administration pretty pissed at him. And it did play a role in his leaving the administration. Now I know this is a pretty unique situation, with the VP quarantined, the Speaker of the House dead, and then the President herself out of contact, but IDK seems like there’d be maybe a bit more pushback to Green trying to seize control there. I also do like though that Green exceeded his authority, and his fuck-up is what leads to where things are at. I might have missed something listening, but who did he bully into relaying his order to the Pacific Command? I’d expect that PACOM would want any such order coming through the Sec of Defense, and in turn through the respective JCS setup. So one thing I was a little confused on was how his order made it through. The end bit though, man you know how to tease with these stingers Chuck :) I’m so insanely curious how all this stuff plays together. Really looking forward to reading this thing.

I will say this is still great book. Yep Secretary of State needs to be sent to somewhere else. He reminds me to much of some current idiots. (Not saying who)
