Ah, Alex, I can't thank you enough for digging up this gem. Truly award-winning performances abounded, and the production was sublime. I can see why Kemi ate it up. And I noticed she did put 2 + 2 together concerning the Disney use of the Tchaikovsky melody. Dearest Kemi, I realized during your end comments that I must truly love you as we have stood the test of time together here. πŸ’œ

I'm so. happy that you enjoyed this movie. It's one of my favorites. This movie has one of the best scripts and the best acting. It’s such an underrated gem. After the Tsar was killed, it was announced that he died, but the new Russian government didn't say they killed his entire family. Their bodies were missing. Which created rumors of possible survivors. It was very prevalent in the 20th century. There were many Romanov imposters. The most famous one was a woman named Anna Anderson who claimed to be Anastasia (even though DNA proved she wasn't). Anna Anderson’s real name was Franziska Schanzkowska and she was a Polish factory worker. The Romanov's remains were found in the 1990s and DNA proved that Anastasia was indeed dead along with the rest of her family. The rumors inspired a French playwright to write the Play Anastasia, this film is an adaptation of that play. This movie also leaves it ambiguous if Anna is the real Anastasia or not, which was very clever. I believe they left this ending ambiguous on purpose because no one knew the truth at the time and the filmmakers probably didn't want to get in any legal trouble with Ms. Anderson or the remaining Romanov family members that were still alive when this film premiered. I read somewhere that some of the remaining royal family didn't like this movie. Miyenkia is a Russian nickname that means β€œlittle one.”
