The making of The Severed Tail has been an extraordinary team effort involving some of the most magical collaborations of my career so far.
Vitali Gelwich a self taught Russian-born, Berlin-based photographer known for his evocative fashion and portrait images loved the project and joined us on set. He would slink around and click away often without even looking through the lens, and he ended up with some fucking amazing behind the scenes photographs. Big love to Vitali.
We made a shortlist of some of our faves, and Vitali painstakingly printed them by hand, creating a set of new Edition Prints.
These will not be released publicly until the Venice pre-opening on the 19th April. However as always, you get a sneak peek, and a special Patreon only discount on the prints. Your very special price is 200€ per print, which is 50€ cheaper than the public price. You can also buy all 7 prints for a special price of 1200€.
10% of the total profit from the sale of the prints will be donated to charities aiding Ukraine.
I will post a link this week for orders, and the Editions will be sent out upon my return from Venice!

My tail was snipped off the other week 😭😭😭. I’ve been running around crazy trying to find it.
The Severed Tail interrogates the complex relationship we have toward the loss of human and animal tails, either through violent acts of docking or the evolutionary loss of our own tail during the foetal stage.
At around 8 weeks, our embryonic tail disappears and is absorbed into our tailbone. In the animal world, tails are often docked (removed) to prevent tail-biting or a build-up of faeces.
Piglet is played by human Kiani, a (not-so) trained live piglet, and a preserved dead piglet

Here is the completed film, now with a soundtrack and a cameo of me on the flute.
This is the film component only, to be displayed on a 16mm projector. I will share the sculptures as soon as they are complete.

Sorry I’ve been quiet. I just finished the edit of The Severed Tail and my treat for this month is that I will share extracts for each scene prior to the official premiere at the Venice Biennale in 1 month’s time.
For now, here is an almost full cast reveal, except for Piggy who we are photographing tomorrow. Her prosthetics were hanging down her face and covered in fish eggs at the time of the shoot.

As promised, here is the big reveal of the insane set design by Emilia Margulies. She really poured her heart and soul into this project and created this to die for Leonora Carrington-esque dream set.
There is one room missing from these pictures, because after the first filming day the dog show room was transformed with black vinyl into the lab mouse room. We are awaiting some production stills as I don't have any pics of this room yet, and I will post as soooooon as I get them!!

As is my signature style of filmmaking, many of the actors are either friends, or cast because of their own identity rather than filling a role.
Parma Ham (in the red latex) is an old friend and creature of the underworld. They flew in from London with Spook and Genesis to star as the three experimented upon mutant mice. Sadly we lost some mice along the way - Salvia got Covid and Jasper had a schedule clash - but just like the mice in your kitchen, there were always more! 💕

This is the dance where Piglet is seduced by tailed animals, and tormented for not having a tail.

Here is sneak preview number two - testing piggy, fish and mice prosthetics 🐁🐭🪤🐖🐷🐽🐠🐡
Piglet, Vacanti Mouse, Doogie Mouse, Japanese Waltzing Mouse and Killifish all had the help of prosthetics to transform them into their animal selves. We had animal ears, gills, and snouts specially crafted by Una.
Piglet's tail stump had two versions - one was built with an invisible tube inside, so that it could squirt blood on demand 💦

Today is the day! We have finally started shooting The Severed Tail!!!
I got up at 4:30 and we have just wrapped at 21:20 on the first day of what will be a five day shoot...... We have 45 people on set, no heating in mid-February Berlin, and a whoooole lot of tails 🐖🐕🐁🐄🐒🐅🐈🦣🦍🐈⬛🐓
Instead of a live session this month I will be posting rehearsal videos, BTS photos from set, and general snippets of the production process. You will get the most intimate view of the making of a film than I've ever shown before.
Here are photos of some of the handmade costume elements that will appear in the film: Piglet's Crown, Piglet's Seahorse Tail, and Vacanti Mouse's Ear, a silicone ear that I will be having nightmares about for weeks to come.... 🥲👑😰👂🏼

Firstly, apologies for my silence. I am in the deep dark depths of multiple productions and I am fucking swamped!! I owe you all a January session and so I have some treats for you.
I will be filming The Severed Tail in the first week of February. As you know, the project remains top secret for now, but I am giving you a sneak peek into the makings of the film. It has been a while since I have asked for your input on the monthly live sessions, so I would love to know what you would most like to see.
I am open to the session taking whatever form you desire. For example:
a) screen some of my early works (The Udder, Blood, Blue Roses, The Needle and the Larynx...)
b) update you on my current projects (Donkey Party, Prayers for Roadkill)
c) group workshop where you tell me about your projects
d) play werewolves and villagers?
e) other delicious fantasies
Many of us are in different time zones and with different commitments, so I wanted to ensure that I'm not repeatedly excluding any of you from participating because of the timing. I would usually plan them for 19:00 CEST.
Please comment your thoughts and requests! I look forward to hearing from you and will plan the next session accordingly.
