I watched Nosferatu (2024) on the 4th of July (lol a fittingly festive film) and loved it! this movie is a visual masterpiece. from set design, to costume, to historical references, to cinematography, so much attention was paid to the details that made this film such a delight to watch. Lily Rose Depp can ACT, I was completely swept away in her portrayal of Ellen. particularly obsessed with the way she can contort her face and body, so cool. anyways, I'm off to study 1800s fashion, because those dresses and silhouettes were absolutely impeccable!

NewJeans, my all time fav kpop group, has their 3rd year anniversary coming up this month and I wanted to draw something to celebrate! :D this is my second time making an anniversary piece and it's a small token of my appreciation and love for them. ^.^

so I'm no stranger to kpop, but NewJeans is the first group to have captivated me so wholeheartedly. you know you're in deep when you join a subreddit. this was my first time being interested in each individual member and falling in love with their personalities and quirks. before I knew it, I was watching performances, vlogs, and of all things, lives. I never understood why people would care about lives until I really did and was tuning into each new broadcast subtitled and reuploaded by other fans. I started learning Korean to better understand the members, learning dances, making cosplay, all because I was so inspired by how they lived and always encouraged each other and fans to have fun. when I think of NewJeans I think of silliness, exuberance, and joy. life can be filled with so much pain and difficulty, it's nice to embrace whatever lights your heart up. ^.^

and that's on consumerism. jokes aside, I've used these albums so many times as reference, scrapbook material, decor, and Korean practice. it always perks me up to see them here and there and it's a nice reminder for me to find the positive in each day.

so yeah, I miss them (iykyk), but I'm grateful we have all the music, videos, performances, photoshoots, and lives they've done. I'm forever changed by what they put out into the world and nothing could be more beautiful than that.

above: lately, I've been loving landscapes and couldn't get the image of a person situated among mountains and an expanse of sky out of my head. I've also been watching birds and admiring their graceful movements and speed as they fly in looping trails among trees and take off among the clouds. I love observing these scenes of travel and motion and feel my own heart and body lighten in response.

and this month's sticker! I wanted to try my hand at a simpler design this month since I love details and have a tendency to overload my pieces. it was a surprisingly fun challenge to pare back and figure out what parts were necessary to convey an idea and what ultimately felt extraneous.

what I've learned from sketching in pen

at any given time my brain is 75% occupied by NewJeans. the other 25%....irrelevant. I've really enjoyed sketching with pen lately (using the pilot hi-tec 05 to be specific), because I like how it forces me to be more intentional about the lines I draw. it also makes me draw slower while I think about where to place the next line. I've always had the habit of drawing really fast, which is useful in some ways, but also means that I make a lot of random marks that confuse me and end up spending a lot of time fixing whatever nonsense I threw down in haste. I think drawing with intention is a skill and great for training your understanding of why something works and the contexts that it best serves.

this is something I just thought of this morning, but I'd really like to focus on a single supply for several drawings. I think there's a lot to be learned from sticking with a medium and style. I've been jumping among mediums a lot in the past year (oil pastels, gouache, acrylic, color pencils, etc.) and while experimentation is fun, I'm ready to stay the course for awhile and deepen my understanding (like I did with Inktobers back in the day). basically, limitations breed creativity and I'm curious to see what I can learn when I'm not abandoning a supply all the time. xD

I've had this set of highlighters for awhile and never thought to make art with them. turns out it's somewhat of a nightmare to capture (fluorescent colors don't scan and finding good lighting for photos is tricky). xD I had a lot of fun tho and really enjoyed getting to work in this strange medium. I've also been trying out simpler styles and learning how to stylize things so they're still legible with less visual info. it's funny, you'd think that drawing things that look "simple" would be easier, but I've found that there's a lot of hiding that goes on with a ton of detail. stripping things back is teaching me to focus on what's necessary and let go of the rest.

some old sketchbook pages, when I was obsessed with pencil. these are from before Catgirl came out! so glad I can share Chroma sketches now haha. if you haven't played Catgirl yet, give it a go! it's a free game I worked on with City Girl and Ichigo and it's a sweet silly romp. >w< seeing these sketches makes me wanna draw with pencil again, I wanna hear the scratch of the lead against the paper's surface...

look what came in from the printers this week! :D I think this set turned out really nicely and that the colors complement each other well. the glitter finish on the sticker reminds me of the childrens' book the rainbow fish, a book I absolutely adored growing up. I spent so much time running my fingers over the sparkly scales on the fish thinking I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life. xD

I'll get started on packing mail next week. unfortunately, my back got reinjured, so recovery is taking longer. ;w; pls send healing vibes! (｡T ω T｡) I'll do my best to get May rewards sent out before the end of June. ^^

32 year old ladyyy~✨✨

idk how niche this is, but I had to paint one of my all-time favorite youtube videos, which is none other than jennamarbles’s i gave myself a claire’s makeover. I just adore jenna and julien’s silly energies and how they have so much fun doing just about anything with each other. it always puts me in a good mood to watch this video hehe :-) also I love singing the iconic “32 year old ladyyy~✨✨” in my head haha

painting makes me feel alive!! 🫶

I've been gouache painting a lot lately because it is FUN and I enjoy it very much. :D I love mixing colors and creating cohesive color palettes. I love watching the watery pigments swirl on the paper and bloom and settle into new shapes. I love using the brushes to create unexpected textures and finishes. the water, paints, and paper interact in real time, coming alive before my eyes, becoming an interconnected entity with parts in conversation with one another. it's, funnily enough, the look I've been trying to recreate digitally for so long. I love digital art, but its capabilities are its own and sometimes there aren't substitutes. I feel like I'm just at the start of my painting journey and I'm really excited to learn more as I continue!

gouache landscapes 🖼️🌾☁️

got super inspired by The Wild Pencil to take out my gouache again and paint. :D turns out gouache is still my favorite thing to paint with, it's so easy to use and versatile + it's really easy to layer with other mediums (so in love with all the different textures). even though my paints are completely dried out (that was my bad), all I need is a little bit of water and they're fully functional again. I also love how seamless it is to create cohesive color palettes with gouache. it's such an intuitive medium and so forgiving, I just have so much fun with it. ^^

above: I saw a girl at the park sitting in a tree and I loved how it created such a sweet and idyllic image. it was a hot day paired with cooling breezes and I truly felt the beautiful essence of summer in those moments.

and this month's sticker! all the plants and flowers in my garden have been bursting with new growth and it’s been so lovely to take in the plethora of color that has come to life. I’ve been spending a lot of time observing all the various plants and critters and it’s been such a healing experience.

colors colors colors 🌈

lately, I've been trying to push my understanding of colors by expanding my idea of what "makes sense". it's a desire to move beyond "sky is blue, grass is green" way of conceptualizing color. I've been doing this in two ways: choosing and layering colors I wouldn't normally and working with limited palettes. I'm particularly inspired by art both influenced by and from the Impressionist period. some examples:

I really love how they use color to depict feelings and emotions rather than visual reality. there are so many beautiful color shifts and colors used in unexpected ways that make a piece come alive, like they possess an energetic spirit. it's something I find hard to even translate into words, because the reaction it elicits feels so evocatively primal and subterranean. it makes me feel a lot! it looks beautiful! I feel compelled to recreate it! 🫶✨

I've been sewing again and would like to show you what I've made. I acquired a sewing machine back in December, tentatively planned a few projects, realized I was dilly dallying out of fear, and ripped off the proverbial bandaid. I'm now 3 completed projects deep and feeling immensely proud of myself for learning so many new skills. so far I've made a tote bag, a pincushion, and a strand of bunting all from the same secondhand tablecloth! lowkey, sewing blows my mind. there's something about it that's borderline alchemical. the fact that I could turn an old tablecloth into three new practical objects makes me sooo giddy!

the beauty of hobbies is that they're something you can do purely for yourself. there's no incentive or pressure to monetize or to even be "good" at it, it's mainly a way to engage in process for the sake of it. imagine, something you can be bad at on purpose! it's awesome!! plus, it's really fun to show yourself that you're always capable of learning new skills. for a long time, art was my hobby until I made it my job and I eventually realized I needed a new hobby. something I could pour my energy into that asked nothing of me. somewhere I could fail over and over again without repercussion.

I want learning to be something I engage with for the rest of my life and creating little projects for myself is a fun way to nurture that desire. I've always really admired women whose biographies read like a list of hobbies and got really excited when I realized that I could do that, too! really cool to see peeps in the discord on the same wavelength re: DIY degrees. the feeling of getting lost in a rabbit hole? that's pure.

april rewards just came in today and I could screeeeammm I think they turned out so good! I did a lot of deliberating on the sticker's finish and I'm so jazzed that everything came together to fulfill the vision. I was nervous about choosing a bold holo color for the background, but it's actually everything so yayyy! birds and plants 🦜🪴

recent exploration with mixed media (marker, color pencil, neocolor). it always feels really freeing to make art traditionally since so much of the finished work I make is done digitally. working with traditional materials helps me let loose and the absence of an undo button builds my confidence in trusting the process and laying down ideas. things build on each other in a fluid way that I find very satisfying. have also been trying to push my understanding of abstraction and training my eye to see shapes in everything in hopes of improving my ability to draw.

in the spirit of this month, I wanted to make some mermaid art by diving into the world of colors found in the ocean and among marine life. I am forever inspired by the ocean and find myself noticing new things to appreciate about it with each passing year.

above: I love the variety of bright colors that fish can display, particularly when light reflects off their array of scales. there's so much inherent movement in the ocean and the life it carries, the perpetual visible change is a force I find immensely beautiful.

and this month's sticker! I loved the idea of seaweed hair and think the two look very similar, especially in motion underwater where their tendrils rhythmically move and flow.

[short comic] hummingbird 🌿🌼

watched a hummingbird eat a snack from some flowers in the front yard the other day and was absolutely delighted. entire face shoved in the flower, it looked so funny. the entire show was over in less than 30 seconds, so I feel very lucky to have caught that part of their daily routine when I did. while drawing this comic, a hummingbird flew up to my office window, flitted around for a bit, then went on its way. seems we've been crossing paths lately! ✨

[mini comic] a good book 📗

I recently finished reading Monstrilio by Gerardo Sámano Córdova for a book club and can tell I thoroughly enjoyed it because I made the face when I was done. I've read a lot of books and the majority haven't left an impression beyond my time reading them. so, I can always tell when a book has deeply affected me and this one definitely fit the bill (usually by making me cry or making me want to cry xD). have you read a good book recently? one that's made your face scrunch up with so many emotions? ahaha

the comic is in purple fitting with this week's theme! I thought I'd have done more color exploration, but the truth is mid-week I was overtaken by the urge to make comics so I just went with it. I'm thoroughly fascinated by comics as a medium and want to follow my curiosity (what inspired me to try a weekly challenge in the first place) wherever it leads.

[short comic] wisteria 💜

continuing with this week's purple theme, I thought it'd be fun to make a 4 panel comic about the delightful climbing wisteria that come back every spring at my local library. it's always an exciting moment to make note of their return after they go bare during winter. I love their long lantern shapes and gradient of flowers that sway elegantly when a breeze rolls by. and of course, that color! such a variety of sweet and bold purples, it's a true treat for the eyes~ ^^

I started off this week's challenge by using a medium I've been wanting to improve at, acrylic paints! :] I love watching how the paint swirls and blends and the textures that arise from your brush movements. acrylic was a pretty funny choice on my part, because purples can be notoriously hard to mix, especially without a magenta (I substituted with fluorescent pink instead and supplemented with a vibrant purple).

speaking of, learning how to mix paint colors from primaries has been a really fascinating process. it's so different compared to digital art, where all the colors are immediately available to you, and has led me to think about colors and limited palettes in new ways, which is really cool. to use a truism, you very much have the colors that you have. best to figure out how to use them.

generally speaking, this week I'd like to explore the wide range that purple has to offer from warm magentas that lean red and brown to cool indigos that border on blue. I think there's a lot of interesting emotional associations with those different hues and shades that I'm excited to learn more about. 🪻⋆˙⟡

based on your votes, I am now tasked with designing a character inspired by these two (🍄🌻) emojis! technically, 🌻 and 🌱 tied, so I just chose between them randomly. I immediately latched onto the idea of a giant mushroom hat and let the design flow from there. I've been doing more gardening lately (lots of yardwork to be done when spring rolls around xD) and thought it'd be cute to put her in a gardening friendly outfit that allows her to move around comfortably and get dirty. that and a hat are absolutely essential. bonus if you have some headphones and a podcast 😎
