November 2025 mail club ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿชบ miniature worlds

hello! โœจ

There's a certain dustiness to November, like an old wooden box creaking open at the latch, that intrigues my curiosity. I love the muted colors that cover the landscape during this colder month, inviting a state of inward reflection and quiet.

want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).

above: I have a fascination with trinket shelves and love how they carefully arrange and display small objects in a way that makes them shine. each square is an invitation into a little world, its own story, a tiny museum for you to rest at and admire.

and this month's sticker! there are so many gorgeous neutral tones this time of year signaling an end of a cycle and the start of another. I wanted to make a piece that celebrated the subtle beauty of such understated and harmonious colors.

โ˜†

This month's postcard and sticker are available for galaxy, eclipse, and interstellar patrons!

โ˜† galaxy - postcard ONLY ($10)

โ˜† eclipse - sticker ONLY ($10)

sketching on whatever is laying around ๐”Œีž. .ีž๐ฆฏ

finally got around to scanning some sketches from a few months ago I did on big leftover envelopes (hand for reference in second photo)! I've had the first piece hanging above my computer as a reminder to stay loose and playful with my art. this is when I first started getting into drawing with pencil and challenging myself to draw at larger scale. it's fun to see how my techniques and style have evolved since and I like how drawing on different canvases and in abnormal environments changes the way I draw. there's always something new to explore with art, keeps things exciting!

we're up all night to paint n throw art supplies around

scuttles around with paints and laughs to self

painting and experimenting with different mediums continues to be a lot of fun~ I've been making efforts to paint more regularly and casually, to pavlov myself into associating painting with making art in a chill and fun way. it's been rewarding to learn new mediums and observe how they speak to one another on the page and across forms. it's something I had put off for a long time, because I was intimidated by the learning curves. then life happens and I realized now is as good a time as any to start. ^_^b

to quote a comments section on a tiktok about learning to swing a really big sword:

if there's something in your life that you know is gonna take a long time to do, but you know you want to do it? the time will pass anyways, might as well try <3

staying looooooooose โ€เฟ

it's funny, the longer I make art the more I find myself gravitating toward looseness in expression and simplicity of form. when I look back on a lot of my old art, I can tell how tightly I was approaching my lines and shapes, trying so hard to eke out every last bit of detail in an attempt for control. over the art I was making? over my life? the lines are blurred in a way I tried to scrub out in art.

so perhaps the looseness is a sort of letting go, of reconciling with the enigma and uncertainty that is life, from which beauty emerges. I've been practicing looseness by focusing on overall shapes, values, and limited color palettes, all for the purpose of pushing myself away from precision. with less to hide behind, I've found that the true feeling and energy of a drawing, painting, etc. is given a chance to fully breathe. to sit before you in quiet as if to say "hello, how are you?".

oh don't mind me, i'm just painting ๐ŸŽจ โœง๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ๊ซ‚

painting continues to activate excitement in my brain, so I've dedicated myself to learn more about it. I want to make painting into a regular part of my art practice and what helps with that is finding ways to make the process of painting more accessible for myself. I used to get really tripped up by the setup, tear down, and various supplies involved and it's been nice to do it more and develop an approach that makes sense to me and how I like to work. I'll share more in another post about my setup and supplies, but essentially it's all in service of getting me to paint more often. as you can see, I've been practicing color mixing and acclimating myself to the particularities of gouache (eg: how much water and pigment to use, drying time, how to layer colors). it's so much fun! i! love! painting!!! and I really look forward to doing more of it! :D

mini inktobers ๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ๐Ÿ‚

wanted to do some casual ink sketches in the spirit of inktober! and because it's October what better to draw than a couple witches? it's been so long since I've done a full inktober and honestly, I doubt I will ever again. so mini sketches it is. :D I've written about why I like drawing in pen here and here. I always learn something interesting about how I like to draw when I use pen and consider it an indispensable tool for both intentionality and finding surprise in art. lately, I've been encouraging myself to focus on making art and less on thinking about making art. things always change once you actually start doing something and I want to be open to those changes, to see them as a natural part of any process in art, in life.

October 2025 mail club ๐ŸŒ•๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›โœจ Witching Hour

hello! โœจ

I'm so excited that it's October, because it's the perfect time to dive into my love for making witchy and spooky art. I've been experimenting with ways to incorporate texture into my digital art to help roughen up the canvas and cut back on polish, which I think is fitting for the autumnal season as nature dies back and new textures emerge in the landscape.

want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).

above: a witch stands brewing potions in a cozy room lit by candles and the soft glow of the full moon. look, it's not autumn until I get to draw a giant witch hat. I really enjoyed mixing a traditional pencil sketch with digital colors in this piece and I think it gives the art a worn-in, lived-in feel, fitting for a witch familiar with creating strange magical concoctions.

and this month's sticker! what lies beyond the watchful eye of the raven in the night? I wanted to focus on making a piece that felt striking upon first glance and a little eerie as you looked longer. I wanted to keep the composition simple for the scale of a sticker and let other elements like color and texture come through and add depth to the art.

y'all

my mixed media experimentation continues, bc I simply can't be stopped. what's on the docket this time? copic markers, color pencils, and gouache, which have turned out to be one of my favorite combos thus far. all 3 tools are really easy to work with and layer with one another, making the art process feel intuitive and seamless. I really value those qualities when making art, because feeling hindered by my tools just complicates emotional expression, which is core to why I make anything. I've recently leveled up my gouache tools with a waterbrush pen, which has made using gouache a lot easier and more fun. look, I don't want to go through the whole song and dance of cleaning a container of paint water and brushes every time I want to paint. we adapt. really excited to play around with these three tools more and see what kinds of layering effects I can push! I LOVE THIS PENCIL โœ๏ธ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ““

*whistles*

the aforementioned pencil, the matte black Blackwing. I honestly don't think it's much different from any other solid quality 3B pencil, but I'm enjoying these while I have them. :] I've historically used mechanical pencils with 0.5 HB lead, a habit leftover from all my years of notetaking and homework in school. HB lead is great for projects that require regular erasing (aka the ran through pages of my math and physics homework), but I've long been hankering for something with more oomph and range. enter: the lead scale.

ooh yeah look at all those different values

3B's a pretty good jump from HB and I've been pretty pleased with the increased darkness I've been able to get in my drawings. the lead is also easier to smudge, which allows for nice variation in texture + it's fun to get your fingers up in a drawing and move stuff around. :D drawing has been really enjoyable lately, I love how easy it is to pick up a pencil and get straight to it. I also feel like I approach drawing traditionally and digitally differently and have been trying to bridge the gap by incorporating more of my traditional habits into my digital work. it's proven rather tricky and for now it's much more satisfying for me to draw traditionally. xD

๊•ค august mail shipped out + stamp review! ๐Ÿ“ฌโœ‰๏ธ

hello! โœฉ

some housekeeping first, all August mail has been shipped as of September 22. to see when your mail will arrive or if you have other questions, please visit my monthly mail FAQ.

now onto the fun stuff! ( แต” โฉŠ แต” )โ‹†ห™โŸก

I buy stamps every month to send out patron mail, so I'm always up to date on the new designs USPS releases. for this batch of mail, I sprang for the new Spongebob and 250 Years of Delivering stamps and wanted to review them! I spend a lot of time with stamps as I apply them to envelopes, so I develop a familiarity with their unique features I might otherwise overlook. I'm also just realizing that stamps are essentially little stickers and as an artist running a monthly sticker club, one could say, I've been known to enjoy stickers.

OHHHHHHHHH let's start with the Spongebob stamps! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿซง (I hope at least one person got that reference haha)

first off, these are adorable. I love Spongebob and in some ways this show practically raised me and greatly influenced my sense of humor. the art is is wonderful, but something that caught my attention while actually using the stamps was the finish on certain parts of the stamp, like Spongebob's eyes! I noticed I had a harder time smoothing these out and realized the finish is a plastic coating that gives the design a shine. it's rare that stamps have an added finish and if they do it's usually some sort of metallic foil, so this detail was a real surprise. the plastic finish is also on the bubbles of the other designs, but they were too small and tricky for me to properly photograph. xD (not sure I did a good enough job photographing the eyes either haha)

overall, I give these stamps a 3.5/5. I wish the art was more varied and the plastic coating, while fun, actually made the stamps a little hard to use.

up next is the 250 Years of Delivering sheet! lots to love about this sheet, like how the entire page is one giant artwork split up into individual unique stamps. such a cool idea that also worked well when executed.

these stamps are also a unique dimension, a long and tall rectangle that I haven't really come across in my experience of forever stamps, which are usually compact rectangles. you can see it here on an actual envelope and how it takes up a pretty solid chunk of vertical space:

I give these stamps a 5/5. I love that you get 20 unique stamp designs and I like the theme and accompanying artwork. I โค๏ธŽ the USPS! they play a major role in the running of my patreon mail club and I really appreciate all the work they do in helping me send out fun mail rewards to my patrons every month. ^^

that's all for now! hope you enjoyed my little reviews and perhaps I'll do another installment when I get my hands on new designs! we are in the season of holidays, so there's bound to be more interesting stamps in the near future.

have a lovely day!

sketchdump โœฟ playing with pencils and paints!

I've been really dedicated to and interested in traditional art supplies lately. when I use them, I feel like I'm able to let go and draw more loosely, be less concerned about the outcome and live in the process and experimentation more. I'm always comparing it to digital art, because it's what I know most intimately, but the limitlessness of digital sometimes feels like a hindrance ironically. so much time and brain space is spent on decision-making, because in a world of endless capability and features (so so many features my goodness), how do I decide what's the best brush to use? with traditional, it often goes like, well, I have the pencil and paper that I have so I guess I'll draw with those. the deliberation over tools is done and I can go straight on into art making.

so yeah, I've been playing around with layering supplies more and more, discovering texture combinations that arise from the interplay, and learning so much. thanks for your support here on patreon that allows me to buy art supplies and explore new mediums. I'm having a lot of fun and it's really helped me enjoy making art in new ways. ___ใ€†(ใƒปโˆ€ใƒป)

September 2025 mail club ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿงฃ by my side

hello! โœจ

I thought it'd be fun to try mixing traditional and digital art techniques this month and went ahead with all sorts of experimenting. I've also been loving jewel tones lately and wanted to find ways I could incorporate those colors in a way that was congruent with my style. both of these pieces ended up having a cozy storybook feel, which I'm really delighted about.

want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).

above: I had this image in my head of a long sprawling scarf that just would not leave me so I decided to turn it into art. I wanted to make something that felt playful, colorful, and textural that would encourage the eye to travel around the piece.

go after your life!

and this month's sticker! I really got to mix traditional and digital with this piece by doing it fully in gouache, then adding digital details. I love how the texture of the paper and gouache really come through and add so much character to the piece. it's a technique I want to continue exploring as I do more painting.

painting like I was always meant to be

pov ur my gouache paints when I open you up again

I'm always finding my way back to gouache. the process of mixing the paints and layering the colors feels so intuitive and enjoyable and my recent major upgrade in my paint water filtering setup (aka I bought a funnel) has made it so much easier for me to cleanup and get back to painting the next day. like I recently mentioned, I've been paying a lot more attention to shapes lately and have found a lot of curious excitement in abstracting forms. I also took time to learn how to mix neutrals (yay for follow through) and have been getting a bunch more mileage out of my paints. couldn't have done it without the color wheel, huge shoutout to the real one from day one:

everyone say thank you to her

so yeah, lotsa fun in the studio and all I wanna do is keep painting so...that's what I'm gonna do. :]<3

i made a BIG painting :)

there's a giant blank wall in my living room that I've long puzzled over how to design. large art can cost a small fortune, so I took matters into my own hands and decided to make my own art. I bought the largest canvas the art store had to offer (3' x 4') and dove in. this was my first time making art this big (something I've been doing more of lately) and it was both exhilarating and puzzling. I love the challenge though and want to continue learning about painting. I'm thinking of learning how to mix neutrals next, seems fun!

help i'm seeing shapes everywhereee

something peculiar has started happening now that I'm going on daily walks. wherever I go, my mind sees shapes. I've walked in this park countless times, yet the landscape has been made anew with whatever has decided to grant me this mode of attention. out of the literal woodwork, shapes and textures are jumping at me, waving their hands in my face, beckoning me to look closer. I'm more than happy to oblige, because it fascinates me that so many little artworks naturally exist in the space around me. here are some shapes that have stood out to me on recent walks: I'm realizing how Julio Torres this is all sounding, yet I'm just so delighted by all the beautiful detail that lives in places my eyes used to glaze over. this also reminds me of a practice some artists do where they cut out a paper frame that they can hold up anywhere to create an impromptu "artwork". it's all about training your eye to see compositions in every day life.

so yeah, walks have taken on a whole new level of fun now that my eyes are always scanning my surroundings for interesting shapes. they are everywhere and it's awesome!!

making big art at my easel โ€งโ‚Šหšโ™ช ๐„žโ‚ŠหšโŠน

life post-injury has facilitated a major shift in my lifestyle including the way I make art. gone are the days of shrimping and sitting for hours at a time. regularly timed breaks for standing and movement are now baked into my work days and I found myself still wanting to make art while standing. my long-abandoned easel has gained a new lease on life alongside me and I've been making more traditional art as a result. what started as a random experiment turned into a miniseries of 3 full ink drawings. it was fun getting to work in a medium I haven't used in awhile and also exciting to know there are so many ways for me to make art outside of my desk-bound digital setup. I've also been into the idea of filling my studio walls with my artwork and being surrounded by ideas, themes, and creations that are currently speaking to me. I love seeing it in other artists' studios and thought why not do that myself?

Yoshitomo Nara's studio

Faye Wei Wei's studio

I'm currently working on a BIG (3 ft x 4 ft) painting for my living room that's been really fun and teaching me so much. I'll share it once it's done, really looking forward to putting something in the giant blank space above the fireplace!

August 2025 mail club ๐ŸŒ€๐Ÿš๐ŸŒŸ an opening in darkness

hello! โœจ

times of difficulty and challenge have surprised me this summer. on the surface, what may seem a lost cause reveals itself through time to be a portal, to realization, to opening, to life.

want to look through old postcards and stickers I designed? click here to check out the gallery of rewards from previous years (no longer available for purchase).

above: I kept feeling drawn to imagery of a bright light shining in a mostly calm, dark space. I played with elements of the ocean to create a small, cozy world that simultaneously feels full of movement. light, a sliver of hope, can start from the within the tiniest pockets of oneself.

and this month's sticker! I found the imagery of consuming a source of light intriguing and built the drawing from there. I loved the idea of stars streaming by in the background, feeding into the feeling of movement from one place to another, from outside to within.

sketchdump & life recently ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŒž

hello!

these are some recent sketches and explorations from my sketchbook. I've been using pen a lot lately to draw, it helps me practice line confidence and keeps me thinking forward. drew a line I didn't mean to? that's okay, it's already on the page so let's find a way to make it work instead of agonizing over a misplaced mark. I've found that it encourages me to think on my toes and engage more with creative problem solving. maybe it didn't go as planned, but what is a plan besides one idea out of many?

life has mirrored this process as well, art imitating life and vice versa. you may remember I injured my back in May. immense pain and limited mobility ensued. I was recovering, then reinjured it in June. turns out it was a slipped disc causing a pinched nerve. I've been in physical therapy for a month now and have improved a lot. even as I regain ability and strength, my relationship with time and energy has been fundamentally altered. recovery left me with a lot of time to sit and think, to reevaluate and clarify my priorities. with limited energy, I became choosy about what I'd engage with. only activities that were absolutely necessary passed through the filter. things I saw a million times before took on a new shape and dimension. nothing about my surroundings had changed, but I was learning to see from a new vantage. beauty emerged everywhere I looked, I could hardly believe it.

this change in perspective has also affected the art I make. I used to throw my energy around, trying to do everything at once, busyness with no focus. I begged for an answer to my indecision, not knowing it would come to me through such a physical channel. I'll go on another walk after this, move my body and remember that life is a perpetual state of change, even when I can't see it.

hope you have a nice weekend,

vicki

trying out different techniques and brushes to help myself stay loose while working digitally. I have a tendency to get overly invested in details throughout the process and it's something I noticed is unique to my digital workflow. it results in work that feels really tense and tight and I don't! like it!! my traditional art feels a lot more loose and free and I'm curious about how I can bring that into my digital space. so yeah, always learning and exploring! :D
