disco elysium 🪩

actually obsessed with the wording of this request and so had to draw it.

was in the mood to throw some paint around, which suits disco elysium's art style well. I know very little about this game, but have a playthrough queued up to remedy that gap in knowledge. from what I've heard this game is pure Chaos™, so that seems interesting. still having a lot of fun using brushes from the oil maxpack. am generally a big fan of maxpack brushes, they're super easy to use right out the box, which is one of the things I prioritize with brushes. I don't like to fiddle with settings much, so if something is good as-is I'm a happy camper.

painted some plants to help calm myself amidst a strange week. it provided a nice distraction. :] trying to push shapes and abstraction while studying old photos I took. I really love finding ways to simplify plant forms, it’s strangely satisfying. also enjoyed playing around with different brushes from the gouache maxpack. there’s always so many brushes in a pack, it takes me forever to make my way through all of them! and most of the time I just end up using the same 3 over and over again. xD

wow, happy new year everyone! I'm always fascinated by the start of a new year. even though we can technically start something at any time, it can be nice to take heed from cycles as avenues for us to make meaning. this month's pieces are an ode to those beginnings, both familiar in their newness and elusive in their uniqueness.

above: I've long felt taken by images of scattered lights foiled against dark backgrounds and liked the idea of explosions of light and their similarity to sparks, of beginnings. it's also something I see in my mind when listening to music and I wanted to illustrate that feeling of temporary oneness I feel when immersed in music, eyes closed. ideas, thoughts, energy, always coalescing beneath the surface, in places where words fall away and lose relevance.

and this month's sticker! on the topic of beginnings, I kept thinking of cells and their constant movement that goes undetected to us, yet is happening at every moment. there is both a sense and actual process of renewal that is within us, even though we may not recognize it. I find a lot of beauty in that mysterious energy, of systems that operate irrespective of our intentions or efforts.

self portraits

I really want to practice my observation and abstraction skills and thought it'd be fun to do some self portraits for quick and easy life studies. was inspired by sandi hester (I always bring her up, she's so good!!) and amber not so great. I used to shy away from self portraits, because I thought they had to be representative of me in some way and I didn't feel capable of conveying that. but learning from other artists has shown me that self portraits don't have to reflect any of that and can just be a way to study from life, and practice colors, shapes, values, etc. it's kind of a game changer, because you always have your own model on hand! :D

used sandi hester's tips for painting self portraits for help in guiding my focus to capture overall feelings rather than realistic depictions. I think there's a lot of interest in abstraction, almost like you're finding the essence of what something is rather than its existence purely in physical form.

this last part of the year between holidays and the new year is always a bit of an awkward time. hope you're doing well, sending you lotsa love <3

 ★ looking back on the art I made this year for patreon fills me with a lot of gratitude and satisfaction. life in its multitudes can't ever be succinct, but for the sake of brevity, before returning to patreon I felt incredibly lost with my art and felt largely unmoored both in life and with creative pursuits. I suppose they're just mirrors for each other at the end of the day. I had a lot of apprehension and doubts about coming back to patreon, wanting to do a good job and fearing that I couldn't follow through. to my pleasant surprise, I was met with kindness and support in the form of you guys and found I felt fueled to rise to the occasion to meet you where you were at. whatever energy it is that we have here feels good and I'm grateful. turns out you often find answers in the doing.

I'm very excited for the new year and want to keep doing my best to make things to share with you. I really feel like I've been able to push myself creatively with these rewards and continue to learn so much in the process of making them. I feel myself becoming more familiar with the essence of how I want to express myself and it's an exciting unearthing, like finding what was always buried there beneath time. it's an incredibly humbling experience that repeatedly shows me how little I know and how much there will always be for me to explore. you know what they say about art imitating life.

𝙤𝙠, 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩! :'𝘿 here's an overview of all the rewards from this year:

I really said landscape layouts and the color blue. boy, do I love my blues...what can I say, my brain feels like it's being gently washed and cradled when it sees blues. 🌊🩵🛏️🚿🧼 despite the postcard size, I really got to dive into my love for detail and learned that I have an inclination to draw swirls (*junji ito has entered the chat*) and flowing shapes. I've found myself leaning into those interests rather than trying to suppress them and making art that feels like I'm trying to be somebody else.

now for favorites! my fav postcard is either June or November. June's just makes me really happy every time I see it, because it feels so quintessential to my younger self and what she found cool and interesting about art. deviantart and forum-posting realness. November feels special to me, because I can glean a narrative just by looking at it. a lot of my art can feel like pretty for pretty's sake, which I enjoy very much, but I'd like to explore story more in the coming year.

my favorite stickers are April and September. for whatever reason, April's art slays unbelievably hard, like...she was cooking. the actual sticker is really cool, too with the holo details and border. and I like September's, because I love sticker sheets and had a lot of fun designing an oc and exploring her lore a bit.

I get a lot of suggestions (thank you btw) and thought it'd be fun to combine several instead of only doing one-offs. and you know what? it's a good time, I'm gonna do this more moving forward. see if you can spot your specific request in there haha that's right it's a game all of a sudden, points will be given out at the end of this post, we stay on the grind. (i'm joking <3) took my new pentel pula man pen for a spin and really enjoyed using it in my md sketchbook, as always. the brown color is really nice and surprisingly buildable. have also discovered the joy of gluing scraps of paper over messed up parts and redrawing them. drew a line wrong? no problem, glue stick and paper to the rescue.

I didn't spring for any finish on the sticker this time, because I like the pencil texture so much and just wanted to celebrate how it turned out. these pieces pair really well with the recent cold winter weather and will be a nice accompaniment as the season deepens~

all eclipse mail went out a couple days ago and I plan on sending out everything else by tomorrow. once everything's been shipped out, I'll post an update. as mentioned recently, I'm holding onto Canada mail for the time being and staying updated with the status of the post strike. as always, if you have any questions about your mail, check out the FAQ. 🌕

drawing lizards and fish! :]🦎🐟

I really wanted to try my hand at drawing some animals, because it's out of my comfort zone and it sounded fun to do something different. what I learned? lizards are basically dogs (aka friends) and fish have emoticon faces (O_O). so yeah, you could say I'm an expert now, don't be too impressed or anything. ended up sketching in pen (I love my trusty pilot v corn + md sketchbook), because my lines felt too stiff when I did it digitally. it's funny with pen, you'd think it'd be harder bc it's "permanent", but I've found I sketch a lot more freely in pen cos it just kinda...is what it is, y'know? it's easier to go with the flow and not overthink every line. plus, pen is more forgiving than you'd think. drew a wonky line? just draw over it again, that's what I did when doing these sketches. xD

same as last month, because I did the sticker sketch traditionally in pencil, I didn't record that part of the process. the sticker speedpaint only features the coloring process (which was unexpectedly challenging this time around, never a dull moment as they say).

something I've started doing to jumpstart the brainstorm process is play a word association game. I think of the month I'm about to create for and what comes up for me. from there, I can branch out into specific things like recent interests/inspirations and color palettes. I like having an overarching theme to work with, because it helps me draw everything back to those handful of ideas and with overall cohesion of concept.

rough thumbnail and idea of painting. I always try to keep it really simple at this stage, focusing on overall composition and where to direct the eye. I say try, because I have a tendency to get lost in detail and have to wrangle my inclinations like they were a wild beast.

it's fun looking back on ref boards, because I get to see how my thought process evolved as I worked on a piece. I may have started out with a certain handful of ideas or vision, but as I work I get new ideas or think about going in a different direction and it's cool seeing a visual map of something as intangible as thoughts.

something else I've been doing recently is taking screenshots of a piece as I'm working on it so I can see how it's evolving and reference previous versions if I think they look better and make changes accordingly. it's a fun litmus test, sometimes I can see that I'm going in a good direction and other times I'll realize a previous version was better and I need to take a moment to simplify my ideas and clear out the noise.

as some of you may know, the Canada Post is currently on strike til further notice, which means I can't send mail to Canada at this time. if you're currently pledging or would like to pledge for the mail club, I encourage you to proceed like usual and sign up. this way I'll have all the patron info on file in one place for easy reference. I will continue to pack Canada mail and will refrain from sending them out until the strike is over. real quick up top, I can't believe we're at the end of the year, officially marking 1 FULL YEAR of mail club rewards! thank you all so much for your support in 2024, I'm so happy to have had the opportunity to show up in this way and I hope you've enjoyed the pieces I've made. I've been able to grow so much as an artist through these artworks and I hope I can continue to evolve with each new piece! alright, back to regularly scheduled programming...

with the winter cold settling in and the days shortening, I'm spending a lot more time cuddled up beneath blankets and resting (the darkness at 5 pm practically demands it). the early dimming skies awash the world in one of my favorite colors, the deep blue of night. in its presence warmth shines and glows even brighter, each emphasizing the other's beauty in spectral harmony.

above: I wanted the piece to feel warm and cozy, like a page out of a storybook. from the glowing stars to the large blanket, I sought to imbue this little scene with comfort, a balm during chilly nights filled with deep sleep and vivid dreams. I loved the idea of a quilt made of the night sky, elaborately decorated with moons, stars, and other celestial bodies and had fun arranging designs like puzzle pieces.

and this month's sticker! I had so much fun working traditionally last month that I decided to do it again. I love the softness pencil adds and how it complements the overall roundness of the forms. I continued with the theme of rest and captured a place I often go when I listen to calming music, a world suspended in gentle space filled with softly glowing lights.

finished watching a playthrough of this game last night and oof  ! between this and arcane I've been inundated in emotional stories lately. mouthwashing is a really cool game, I think it particularly shines in its visuals, both art style and cinematography wise. it has such a specific look to it (I love the influx of modern indie horror games inspired by ps1/ps2 graphics) and the medium of the video game really aids in its storytelling. speaking of, I got really attached to the characters! just really goes to show we're all in this together...honestly need to rewatch a playthrough to pick up on details I'm sure I missed the first time through due to the nonlinear storytelling.

surprise~! look what just came in from the printers today~ :3c I thought it'd be fun to have new envelope art to go with a new year of mail rewards, so a month back I started coming up with designs and I think it turned out beautifully! I tried out art on the envelope flap for the first time and I think it adds such a cute and fun touch. I still really like the old envelopes, but thought it'd be nice to switch things up and try something different. I hope you like the new envelopes and I'm excited to start using them for your rewards come 2025! ^.^

here are some of the brainstorm sketches I did along with a mockup on an old envelope to figure out placement and sizing. it's funny how you can have so many different ideas for something, but once you actually start trying to make it real you realize you need to be more intentional to make it work. xD

and look, I ended up decorating my idea sketchbook yesterday with cute stickers and doodles. I love covering my stuff in stickers, it's instant personalization and a great way to be reminded of what you love/what makes you smile! (aka peep the newjeans stickers.......)thanks so much for your support so far in 2024, just 1 month of rewards left before we complete a full year's set! I can hardly believe how far we've come, it's so exciting! 🫶

I love doing requests, because it gives me a chance to explore archetypes I don't typically gravitate toward. I'm very much a 'draw my favorite character a million times' kind of artist xD how do you think I got these scars? holds up hands to show blisters earned from drawing hatsune miku into many a late night lol it's also a nice way for me to practice technical and fundamental skills and play around with different brushes and processes. my lack of familiarity with the characters means I can take a design at face value and not get caught up in all the headcanons I have for characters I love. it's good to change things up every now and then, keeps the spirit spry! haha~

omg drawing these was such a blast to the past for me. I had one of the books as a kid and loved poring over the artwork in the included comics. I always thought the girls' styles were so cute, especially their transformation fits. the desire to become a fairy girl truly never dies...I can really see how this series influenced the drawings I would make down the line, so interesting to trace how interests in childhood show up in present day.

something silly for the heart today~ been listening to Ditto by NewJeans a bunch to align with the changing seasons and colder weather (<-falsely implying I don't listen to ditto year round...), so I thought it'd be fun to draw some ditto fanart (+ patrons regularly request kpop-related stuff in the suggestion box)~ ^-^

to put it lightly, I'm a big newjeans fan and in addition to their wonderful music and performances, I adore their personalities and dynamics as a group. I have so much fun watching their content, whether it's individual livestreams or group activities. I just think they're people who have an appreciation for and deep interest in life and joy and it really comes across in their creative expression. they've inspired me to see life from a different perspective and learn to look for joy and beauty in the every day as well as actively choose and cultivate the things that are important to me. 감사합니다 뉴진스! 사랑해요~ 💖💙

some words from my journal entry this morning.

I know my words are imperfect, but know that I'm here with you, feeling it all, and trying each day. it's not an explicit goal, but my general aim and hope with this patreon is to provide something comforting amidst the rhythms of your daily life. I have been immensely comforted/encouraged/sustained by art in its many forms throughout my life and if I can return even a fraction of that feeling for a moment, then that's what I'll keep trying to do.

currently bowing down to those who have graphic design skills. the above image took me over an hour to put together and it just looks.......fine LOL (it's truly giving 'graphic design is my passion') I clearly have a lot of practice and learning to do. xD
