Recent character designs and style exploration!

A lot of these were posted in my recent sketchbook post as rough drafts - here are all the finished versions!

I'm trying to branch out a little, so I've been working on all sorts of things as practice. I'd really love to use some of this stuff in the future!

July Update + Journal Comics + INPRNT Code

INPRNT Code

This month's INPRNT code for 15% off is M5EWEII - it can be applied to anything except for art cards! I've added new prints since last time, too.

Patreon Updates

Nothing new to report here this time! Things will continue the way they have been.

Personal Updates

This might not be a very interesting update, but basically I've been busy scrambling around doing odd jobs and trying to branch out and haven't had very much free time. I can't reveal much right now, but here's a quick preview of something I'm finishing up!

Beyond that, I know this past week has been difficult for everyone. As someone who lives in a red state surrounded by red states, I'm still trying to figure things out, and I'm sure some of you are in the same situation. Please take care of each other out there!

July wallpaper poll

It's time to vote on next month's wallpaper! This poll will run until the 5th of July so that new patrons will have a chance to chip in, too.

I only got a couple of suggestions this time, so I'm supplementing with my own ideas, too!

As always, while the winner is the only one that's guaranteed, there's always the chance that I'll draw more than one of these for fun (or even something not listed here). And please feel free to leave suggestions for the next poll in the comments below!

Primrose

This was actually a leftover idea from the "garden" theme that I decided to turn into its own illustration! It will have a wallpaper version, too, so that will be going up sometime early next month as a bonus set (the poll for next month's official wallpaper will be going up tomorrow!)

I've drawn so many bunnies that I feel like it's time for cats to get a turn!

"Treetop Chat" Process

This one is pretty simple (and from 2019!), but since I made a wallpaper version recently, I thought it'd be nice to talk about it! (note: this is the original version - to see how I created the texture of the wallpaper version, I go over that in my vintage newsprint effect guide!)

If you have other questions along the way (about brushes, my coloring methods, etc), you might be able to find answers by clicking through the drawing guide masterpost. If you still aren't sure about something, though, feel free to leave a comment at the end!

So to start:

1) The rough sketch, which was done in Paint Tool Sai. This illustration is a little older, so it's from before I started using the airbrush to sketch. At this point, the composition was a little more open - there's much more space to the left of the figures.

2) A slightly cleaner sketch! I added more trees and roots and enclosed them a little more. I wanted it to have an almost "secret hideout" feeling - like a place that no one else knows about. I also felt like the long, curving lines of the trees helped pull your attention directly toward the figures, whereas the previous sketch left your eyes feeling a little lost.

3) The lineart. Not much really changed here! Since I tend to color things without much texture (especially back when I drew this), I tried to create the majority of the texture through the lines - so lots of little hatch marks and scribbles appear on the trees.

4) At this point I switch to Clip Studio for easy flatting. Color-wise, I knew that I wanted this to have a nice minimalistic pallette. This was my first try, and while I liked it, I felt like it was too heavy and Halloween-ish.

5) I tried incorporating some green and making Gon less pumpkin orange, which helped in some ways, but ultimately I felt like incorporating the green just made the whole thing muddier. Something about the way the green was interacting with the bright yellow, dark grey, and brown made it feel less like forest greenery and more like a color you'd expect to see in a sewer.

6) The color scheme I had initially been fighting for being too "boring" but that wound up being the best fit - lots of green. The trees don't pop the way they did in the first one, and making them green is definitely the less adventurous choice, but it does feel more natural / less distracting. I also swapped out the dark background for a bright one, which, cons: the images loses a bit of that enclosed, secret feeling, but pros: the whole thing feels brighter and cheerier, like a moment bathed in light.

Maybe most important thing is that Gon and Killua are no longer competing for attention here. In the other two color schemes, it's hard to immediately discern the focal point - the darker colors on Gon and Killua are dampened by the dark colors in the background, and in the first one especially, the bright whites of Killua almost melt into the pale yellow of the tree. In this one the darkest darks and brightest brights appear distinctly on the figures, making them immediately read as the focal point.

7) Some basic rendering - as usual, I very roughly throw down two slightly brighter tones using the G pen for a subtle sense of dimension on the trees and moss. You can ese this a little more clearly in the 100% zoom images at the end of the gallery!

8) After that, I just lock the lineart layer's opacity and color some lines! I pretty exclusively focus on the figures here and leave the background as-is, which helps push them as a focal point. I really liked the way the red interacted with the white and yellow - it adds a little more to the feeling of the image being full of light, with that light originating from Gon and Killua.

Here are the colors I used. I think the brown was only used on the eyes, and the brightest red was only used on the blush marks - everything else was either black or dark red.

9-12) A better look at the colored lines, plus some closeups at 100% zoom.

And that's it! Sorry if this one wasn't terribly exciting - I hope it was still interesting to see!

Garden

Here's a quick look at the upcoming wallpaper set! I feel like most of my art is really low contrast/unsaturated, so I wanted to go in the other direction for once.

This set will have poppies, bloodroot, and black-eyed susan! I'd kind of like to add to it in the future - I'd really like to draw some spider lilies eventually.

I hope you've all been enjoying the last of the spring flowers before summer begins!

Printable Greeting Cards Set #1: Citrus and Strawberries

I want to start making more printables when possible, so here's something to get us started! These are 3.5"x5" greeting cards that can be printed out and folded (I recommend using cardstock if you can!)

Patreon Updates

As mentioned last month, the "Parade" tier has now become the "Harvest" tier! If you're already signed up for Parade, there's no need to upgrade unless you want to - you'll continue receiving updates as usual. (But please keep in mind that if you delete or change your pledge, you will not have the option to select Parade again!)

Also, this month I'm finally going to start trying to figure out printables, so Parade / Harvest will get a little greeting card test!

Personal Updates

Contrary to what I said last time, we wound up cancelling our Momocon table. We just don't feel good about attending a convention right now. This does mean that I still have my convention stock, so I'm hoping to sell a few of the smaller items online when I have some time (and once I find a simple online storefront that I like that will handle sales tax for me). I'll keep you updated on that!

Also, it's finally happening - we're finishing up the pitch and it's going out into the world next week!!! Please cross your fingers and send a little good luck our way, we really want to make this book!

Also also, instead of going to the convention, I went and visited my home area again. It's so, so hot this time of year, but it's amazing how many things thrive in that heat and humidity. I also got to see the foster kittens that I mentioned last time again - they're so much bigger now!!

What I'm Reading / Watching / Inspired By

Recently I've been reading the manga Skip & Loafer! It's a breezy slice-of-life about a girl who moves from the country to attend school in Tokyo. I know that sounds wildly cliche, but it's so earnest, charming, and funny that I'm completely in love with it. It's like drinking a big glass of lemonade. Please check it out!!

Drawing Guide: Vintage Newsprint Effect

I've talked a little about this before, but I've tweaked my method some and would like to go more in depth about it! So here's a look into how I achieve this effect!

(Reminder to check out the Process / Drawing Guide Masterpost if you'd like a closer look into other aspects of my process!)

Before we get started: I'm using Clip Studio for this process. Also, remember that the size of your canvas can have a big impact on things. I always use a big canvas - usually at least 4000px in any direction. Now let's get started!

Line and color your image as usual

This technique is applied by altering the final image, so finish your image as usual! You can see how I go about coloring and lining my image using these links. The lineart guide also discusses coloring your lines, which I think really makes this effect pop, so I recommend giving it a try!

Another thing worth noting (that I talk about a bit in the coloring guide) is that I tend to do very subtle shading and gradients, and that I frequently use the "tone scraping" airbrush for this. This lends a little additional texture to the final piece, which helps push the aged look. This is a personal preference, though!

Altering the linework

1) The unaltered image. Here's our starting point!

2) Duplicate your lineart layer twice so that you have three of the same one. You can turn the visibility off on one and move it out of the way if you want - it's just a backup so you always have the original lines in case you need them again later.

My lines are always a little too thin, so I take the top lineart layer and use Clip Studio's "Filter -> Correct drawing line -> Correct line width" to thicken it. I feel like thick lines will look a little better with this effect.

3) Now take the second lineart layer, lock the opacity, and color all of the lines red.

4) Make sure both of these layers are visible, and then shift the red layer down and to the side a bit so it's just barely peeking out from beneath the layer above it.

Now change the opacity of both layers! The number you should lower them to depends a bit on the colors of the lines/the rest of the canvas, so play around a little here. For reference, I have the thickened lines set to 70% and the red lines set to 80%.

Adding in the halftone texture

If you don't have a halftone texture on hand, you can make one! I used this guide - it goes super in depth and shows you how to make an entire array of brushes and how to use them for an authentic look, but if you're like me and just want a little texture that you can easily apply, then you can just skip to the section labeled "Grunged Halftone" and follow the guide up until it has you register the texture as a material. Then you'll have a texture that you can easily drag, drop, and adjust!

So getting back to the tutorial:

1) Once you have your halftone texture registered as a material, drag and drop it onto the image, set the layer mode to "overlay," and use the little square on the canvas to adjust the size - you want it big enough that you can see the texture when it's zoomed out, but not so big that the dots become distracting.

You might notice that sometimes, as you adjust, it'll make weird little patterns - these are called "moire" patterns, and you'll want to avoid them if possible! One way to help avoid this is, once you have the halftone adjusted to your liking, right click the halftone layer in the layer menu and click "rasterize." In my experience this helps soften it up a little. (I forgot to do that for this tutorial, which is why mine looks a little sharper and has a bit of a moire pattern.)

2) Now adjust the layer opacity until you're happy with it!

PS: I usually place the halftone layer above the color but beneath the lineart so that the lineart doesn't have the dot texture.

Adding in the "worn" texture

1) This one is super simple. I make a new layer at the very top of the layer list, grab the "tone scraping" airbrush, and completely airbrush over the entire canvas in white. I use two different particle sizes, which can be adjusted in the brush panel - usually something like 3 and 7. (Keep in mind that if your canvas is smaller/bigger, you'll likely need the particle size to be a little different.)

2) Now just set that to overlay and adjust the opacity!

Messing with the "print registration" of the colors

In old printed images, you'll sometimes notice that the color is a bit misaligned. We're going to mimic that a little!

1) All you need to do is grab your color layer(s) and shift them downward and to the side. That's it!

2) Though one thing to note is that if your image has faces, this will sometimes make them look a little odd. To remedy this I'll usually use the lasso tool to select the face, copy and paste it...

3) ...and then shift the copy pasted layer back into place.

4) Also worth noting: if the layers you've shifted were touching the edges of the canvas, you might have to fill them in since there may be a blank line where the colors used to be. I've drawn some arrows pointing to the gap that appeared in this image.

And that's it! PS, be sure to zoom out occasionally throughout this process, because it can look *very* different when zoomed in. It isn't unlikely that you'll need to go back and tweak a few things.

I've been really fond of this method, so I hope you're able to find some use for it! Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Photo Reference Set #2: Bouquets

Recently there have been some bouquets at the grocery store, and I've been really excited haha!! I felt like they'd make incredible references for bundles of different species of flowers, which is something I don't come across too often. I'm already thinking up all sorts of uses for them (I actually used one of these as reference for a recent drawing!)

I hope they're useful for you, too!

"Kirby 64" Full res + PSD + Lineart

The above is just a preview - the downloadable files are attached below. Includes a full res PSD with all layers intact, a full res jpeg that can be printed, a layered lineart PSD for color practice, and a lineart jpeg at a printable resolution that can be used as a color sheet (note: it's sized at 11"x17", so it unfortunately won't print cleanly on standard copy paper)

This image is from 2016! I actually haven't retired this as a print just yet, but since it's older I don't mind sharing the high res version. Kirby 64 has such a special place in my heart, so even now I'm still kind of endeared by this picture. I'd like to draw a new one someday!

Conditions: You're more than welcome to use these files as study tools, coloring practice, or even to print a poster for your own personal use! All that I ask is that you do not share the high res files, claim them as your own, or use them for profit or professional/promotional purposes. If you color the lineart, though, please feel free to post your recolor publicly, and if you'd like me to see it, you can either tag me on social media or e-mail me at riibrego@gmail.com !

No changes this month! Things will continue on as they have been. It looks like this month's wallpaper is going to be Japanese fruit sandwich-themed!

Personal Updates

A few quick things! My Momocon table from 2019 rolled over to this year, and since it seems like they'll still have Covid policies in place and I'm boosted, I'm planning to be there assuming nothing huge happens before then. As someone who has been avoiding any events or big gatherings this whole time, I'm definitely still nervous though lol... I'll be taking as many precautions as possible 😭 If I have any keychains/pins/etc left over, I'm hoping to sell the rest here! (This is a big if, though, since my stock is pretty low! And due to the rising cost/complexity of international shipping, it will also only be for US residents, I'm sorry!)

In other news, I've started picking colors for our pitch! Here's a tiny look at a VERY rough color pass for one of the pages:

ALSO also, I visited my family, and got to see these sweet kittens that they're taking care of for a local shelter... the one without a tail is like a little hamster 🥺

I hope everyone has a great month!!
