2024-03-29 14:30:02 +0000 UTC View PostThe second instalment of The Matrix saga brings about much more action, drama, and effects but is it any good?
Yes. Yes it is good. Really good actually. When I was growing up everyone who talked about these movies always said that the first Matrix was great and all the others were bad. I would like to now present the notion that this movie is not bad at all, and is in fact a very enjoyable and action packed sequel to a beloved film. It's not as good as the first (obviously as that one is pretty much an action masterpiece) and some of the pacing may be a bit off, CGI a little wonky, and action being much more about spectacle than substance... but like I had so much fun so who really cares? Let's start with the action because it was fantastic! The fight choreography was insane at time and the Asian influence of fighting and wire work was much more noticeable. The action is very floaty and wire work heavy due to everyone being masters of the matrix and it leads to some incredibly fun and exciting action where people do impossible moves. Watching Neo flip around all over the place will never get tiring. And what about that highway sequence in the last 3rd of the film! I had heard rumours about how fun that was supposed to be but man it was exhilarating. Never before have I seen someone katana slice a moving car and then proceed to shoot the vehicle as it rolls over until it explodes. Besides the action, the visual in this movie are a treat!! The only time they lack is when CGI doubles are used to fight (but even then they look impressive for the time), but everything else is pure gold. All of the backgrounds blend seamlessly with the real sets and everything contains so much detail. I was also worried that the directing would take a hit in the sequels but it is safe to say that the Wachowski sisters know how to direct action. Their use of wide angles mixed with creative camera movements that zoom the audience in and out of fights, around people, and through vehicles kept me very engaged the entire time. Overall, I don't really understand why this movie gets so much hate. I was invested, the twists in the story made sense to me and blew me away, and the action delivered. If you have only seen the first Matrix I highly recommend this second chapter. Let's hope the 3rd doesn't drop the ball!!!

2024-03-28 14:30:02 +0000 UTC View PostTwo more fantastic Season 4 episodes today! Will Season 4 ever let its foot off the gas??
Starship down had a cool name so I was excited for it! It was an episode that managed to cover almost all the bases in terms of characters and small story arcs. We had a Quark centric arc about his trade in the Gamma Quadrant and how he was cheating the Gamma Quadrant version of Ferengi out of deals. Loved how Quark had to slowly convince the guy to trust him again and the whole disarming a bomb situation they had to go through was stressful and funny. It really hit home Quarks argument as well that Profit is only fun when it is like gambling and I loved to see him get an even better deal coming out if it. Bashir and Dax had some great moments together as well reminiscing about (mostly) past Bashir and how in love he was with Dax. Bashir also went full hero mode and saved Dax from some gas after the Jem'Hadar attacked (so cool) and that was pretty awesome of him. Sisko and Kira shared a lot of scenes as well. After the attack, Sisko is left mostly unconscious and Kira is tasked with keeping him awake. This was definitely the emotional core of the episode and Kira's struggle to keep him awake through stories and prayers was tough to watch and very sad. She also opened up to Sisko a lot more and not only discussed him being the Emissary and how it effects her, but also how they are only really work friends and not friends friends. Safe to say, Sisko inviting her to the baseball game at the end is hopefully the start of a new friendship outside of work. Finally, my favourite part of the episode was Worf and him learning to be more relaxed in command. It was cool watching him go from so uptight to listening to O'Briens advice and becoming much more relaxed. It was also awesome to see some other engineers take action! Besides all this, the episode also had really cool visuals and some very awesome explosions!!!!
Little Green Men was such a fun and creative episode! I was not expecting a time travel episode, especially with Quark, Rom, and Nog at the helm but here we are. The first part of the episode was super sweet as Nog is leaving for Starfleet academy and Rom, in keeping with Ferengi tradition, is selling Nog's possessions. Not only that, but Nog and Jake have a small moment of solace before they have to say goodbye and it gave me so many chills. I will miss their hangouts and I hope to see Nog back soon!! But then the time travel happens and wow! Roswell New Mexico, 1947 babyyyyyyyyy. One of the great conspiracies and it turns out Quark, Rom, and Nog were at the centre of it all! It is always so cool seeing Star Trek go back in time and this was no different. Loved the translation issues and hearing what the Ferengi language actually sounds like as well as what english sounds like for Ferengi. It provided for some really funny moments that made me laugh a lot. Obviously, once Quark starts being able to talk again, he immediately tries to make some form of business deal with the "Australians". But what I loved is that the government did not believe him (which I mean I guess they were right because he was lying). Even still, I loved how the government basically embodied the mindset of a conspiracy theorist. No matter what Quark, Rom, or Nog said, they only wanted to believe one thing and that was that the Ferengi were here for war. A really fun episode with cool concepts, costumes, and general fun times! Good luck Nog at Starfleet!!!

2024-03-27 14:30:02 +0000 UTC View PostThis was a recommendation by Jonathan and the UNCUT reaction will be available to everyone on Patreon and much earlier than the edited Youtube reaction I plan to do for this film.
I don't really have much to say about this film. It was incredibly powerful and left me pretty speechless at the end and so I am still wrapping my head around my thoughts as I write this review. The film depicted the civil rights movement and the segregation between White and Black people in a small Mississippi town very well. The brutality and horrible nature of this conflict was not shied away from and there were many moments that left me feeling very uncomfortable. The movie also had so many great transitions where something incredibly horrible would happen to a Black person and the instantly cut to a White person saying "everything is fine". The sheer ignorance of many of the townsfolk amazed me. I was also very interested in how the movie depicted religion as the backbone of all this hatred. It never mentions it outright but from the burning churches and crosses, to people hating others because they are not Christian, it seemed pretty obvious that many of the beliefs came from religious contexts. That's about as much of that conversation as I will have here as it can be a touchy subject for some and I am not quite sure how to frame this conversation around respecting religion and critically analyzing it yet. Besides all this stuff, the cinematography and directing was outstanding. From the first shot to the last there were some very memorable and powerful moments. As well, the score was great and also reminded me of the Truman Show a lot. Seriously, go listen to the part of the Truman show score where he first finds out the world is a lie and tell me they don't sound the same. Thank you again Jonathan for recommending this film!

2024-03-23 18:32:12 +0000 UTC View PostThank you Red Dwarf for recommending this movie! It was so much fun and I can't believe I had never heard of this before. Better Off Dead is a great example of how to set up and continue jokes as it has so many really funny running gags. My favourite of which is the random little kid turned Freddy Kruger/Terminator as he hunts down John Cusack for 2 dollars. There are some other great ones like the falling cereal gag or the flipping indoor space shuttle bit, but this random bicycle kid takes the kid. Watching his attempts to get this two dollars was so funny. From threatening John Cusack with a switch blade to multiplying himself on a dark and misty night to chase John with like 15 versions of himself through a grass field had me dying. But the funniest moment of all came from when John was skiing down the most perilous ski slope at the end of the film and the kid just comes from out of nowhere with his bike (skis attached) and starts screaming "I WANT MY 2 DOLLARS" as he chases him down the hill before being pushed of a giant cliff and screaming the most monotone scream I have ever heard in my life. The kid doesn't fear death and he wants his two dollars... I respect that. Besides that, the main romance between Cusack and Franklin was really sweet and their little date moment actually gave me some goosebumps. Even though they only met 50 minutes into this 1hr 30 min movie, I bought their relationship enough to care about them. This film is just super sweet and surprisingly very very funny! Give it a watch if you want something lighthearted and easy to digest!

The owl never went "hoo"
2024-03-22 14:30:02 +0000 UTC View PostI honestly don't have too much to say on this movie which is funny because the movie tries to say a lot about one particular subject its whole runtime. The movie is about the issue of visas and how they cater to people of wealth and privilege while those who live in poverty have little opportunity to leave their homes in search of a better life. The good of this film was SRK as the leas as always who had the charm and pizzas as well as the emotions to help guide us through the film. Taapsee Pannu was probably the biggest stand out though as everything in the film rode on her character Manu. She was excellent as a woman desperate to get to London in order to give herself and her family a better life. The music was pretty good overall and the dance sequences were fun and laid back. The ending was also amazing and really cemented the films message well. While the message itself is not an issue and I actually respect the film for speaking about it, it is how the film goes about discussing the message that I had an issue with. It just feels a lot of the time that the movie is forcing the message down your throat with scene after scene of the same thing "characters are poor, can't get visa, struggle". I know this is a real world issue but there is a montage of photos at the end of the film of real immigrants crossing boarders illegally and those photos relayed, in a much more powerful way, the struggles these people face in 25 seconds then the whole movie did in almost 3 hours. Again, I think the message is great to talk about but the movie talked about the struggle without showing me too much of it.

The hate is back and hatier (not a word but it is now) than ever
2024-03-21 15:00:08 +0000 UTC View PostWow Season 4 isn't pulling any punches is it?? Two more balls to the walls insanely good episodes with Indiscretion maybe being my favourite of the season so far? It's tough cause all of the episodes have been so good for different reasons but I found myself to heavily invested in this episode in particular. The episode revolves around two characters who we would not expect to be together: Dukat and Kira. I never even thought about putting these two together in an episode but from the moment they stepped foot into that runabout alone, I knew we were in for a treat. Loved their bickering at the start of the episodes when Dukat talks about how Bajor is better off after the occupation. While I hate that sentiment I also believe it to be true in a twisted way. It's much like our society today would not be the same without all the war and conflict that came before it. Interesting notion that. The real crazy good part began when they landed on that desert planet in search of the missing Cardassian ship carrying Bajoran prisoners. What both surprised me and threw me in was how vulnerable Dukat was. His normal jokingly evil demeanour was replaced with a very emotional individual who we find out lost the woman he loved in this crash. A Bajoran woman none-the-less. Watching him mourn her death as he holds her bracelets was honestly extremely sad and I got goosebumps and tears. But the episode was not done yet as we then learn that he had a DAUGHTER with that Bajoran woman. Dukat decides that he needs to kill her and I loved the exchanges that he had with Kira about why he has to do it in order to protect his family (and mostly himself) from any consequences it may cause while Kira basically said "you kill her you die". Watching him find it within his heart to love his daughter and not kill her, as well as seeing him bring her back to Cardassia, really elevated my opinion of him! I know he still did horrible things in the past... but guys he is changing! Oh yeah also Yates is moving into the station and Sisko was having a little bit of a love crisis which my boy Jake Rizzco quickly resolved.
Rejoined was an episode about lesbians. Well not exactly lesbians it was actually an episode about two Trill symbiotes who used to love each other re-connecting in another life and another host. But come on guys, this episode was definitely about lesbians and their place in society as well as how society views them. Sometimes, Star Trek can be subtle with its progressive themes and sometimes it can be fairly on the nose and this one was fairly on the nose (in an amazing way). I mean, there is even a magnificent kiss between the two ladies what more proof do you need! Either way, I always love how Star Trek manages to portray these themes (some would say woke and I say it is woke in the best way possible but I also hate that word it is too overused and has lost all meaning but anyways that is my little rant) in ways that intertwine and work within the general story. Seeing how Trill society rejects those who re-join together in new lives was quite shocking and really reminded me of how our society treats people who are gay by ousting them and casting them aside. Obviously, it is a little better now I think but it is still a conversation that needs to be had with a lot of people. It was also interesting to see how the episode handled the romance itself. It made the romance feel so unbelievably natural and we as the audience were mostly on Dax's side of wanting the relationship to happen as we could really feel how much she loved her. I think this episode did a great job of portraying that gay love is just as strong as straight love. That being said, the ending did leave me with some tears in my eyes as it was not meant to be. Could be a commentary on how in the end, society usually wins and their happiness was broken up over fear of Lenara (the other Trill woman) losing everything. Either way, it was a very strong ending and left me wanting to give Dax a hug. Apologies that this episode review was me basically social commentating the whole episode but I felt this episode out of any that I have watched so far contained the most in your face (again in a good way) social commentary.

So many insanely good lines in this movie. Like seriously some of the best pre fight kill lines I have ever heard. Uma Thurman is the baddest and most coolest person on the entire planet and The Bride is one of the most epic action heroines of all time. Kill Bill Volume 2 is such a great sequel to Volume 1 but at the same time, it feels like both movies need to be viewed together as one long 4 hour thrill ride for full enjoyment. Even the fact that the ending credits had the names of characters not in this film speaks to this. Would love to watch them back to back or if there is a version with both films combines that is even better. The music, action, acting, directing, and writing were all on point this film. Where Kill Bill Volume 1 felt much more cinematic action extravaganza, Volume 2 felt much more personal and intimate. There were no 1 vs 1 million fights like in the first. Instead, the movie has many more 1v1 fights that are set up to be (mostly) personal to The Bride. Even comparing the random semi fight against her would be assassin to any of the fights in the first is interesting. All of the fights in the first were about her getting revenge on everyone for herself. It is a personal vendetta for revenge. But this fight with the assassin revolves around her finding out that she is pregnant. Because of her protective motherly instincts, the fight is embedded with much more emotion and feeling than any of the others from the first. We as an audience also feel this, even when The Bride does not due to her not knowing her daughter is alive, because we know she is. Loved the fight between Elle and The Bride in the trailer. It was so much fun and the ENDING of it was insane. The sound design, especially in that coffin scene was crazy good and made me feel very uncomfortably claustrophobic. The ending as well was the PERFECT ending to the film and Bill's demise was incredibly well done.
