Mini Review #121: Star Trek DS9 4x2/4x3 "The Visitor" and "Hippocratic Oath"

Oh my days is DS9 season 4 starting out strong. I have so much to say about the Visitor but also nothing to say because I just don't feel like talking about it ever again. I only want to stare into space right now think about the episode. Honestly one of the best episodes of DS9 so far and one that made me cry. And not just tearing up with snot exploding from my nose but there was at least one tear that trickled down my cheek! It doesn't seem like much but I don't have tears running down my cheeks often so you know this episode got me emotionally. I don't really want to ruin my experience of this episode by analyzing it so I will keep this review fairly brief and light. I know this may be disappointing to some of y'all but you have the reaction to look forward to and trust me, it is a great one! I really loved seeing Jake in this episode and the lengths he was taking to save Sisko. It was not only admirable, but incredibly sad at the same time seeing his life fall apart in order to save his dad from time limbo. The two parts that got me the most were the very end where Sisko was comforting a young Jake after old man Jake killed himself in order to save his father; and the moment Sisko leaves Jake on the hospital bed the second time he appears. Watching Jake go from the hope of having Sisko back to incredible sadness was heartbreaking and Jake's actor did and incredible job. Nog was a captain which so cool and seeing all our cast gather to try and save Sisko as old people was so much fun. Also Tony Todd was old Jake which was so epic love that man. That's all I'll talk about for this episode. I think I still need more time to recover.

To make matters worse Hippocratic Oath was both a fantastic episode, and one that also ended on an extremely heavy note. This episode was an O'Brien Bashir episode with a Worf subplot and both A and B plots were fantastic. O'Brien and Bashir on the runabout together before it crash landed on the planet had such amazing chemistry and it really felt like they were best friends. But the episode went such an interesting and unexpected direction with the Jem'Hadar being involved. It was super cool to see them first off, but what I never expected was the fact that one of them had managed to be able to live off of the special drug used to control them and was now trying to help his squad get off the drug as well. While that was interesting, it was genius to have Bashir and O'Brien be the two leads in this episode as the conversation surrounding this lead to two very opposing views from two very confident individuals. O'Brien being the soldier, had a distinct bias and hatred for the Jem'Hadar which was not uncalled for while Bashir being a doctor, had more compassion and logic behind his actions. This lead to some head butting which by the end of the episode exploded as O'Brien destroys any chance of Bashir saving the Jem'Hadar in order to save Bashir (at least he thinks it's the only way). The conversation they had in the runabout together compared to the start was drastic. The way Bashir insinuates that O'Brien killed those people, how he doesn't accept O'Brien's apology, the awkward silence. Their friendship is changed and I am sad but interested to see where this goes. They were the best of friends and I want them to play darts together again!!! Worf's subplot was also very interesting as he discovered that DS9 is much more grey than the black and white of a starship. I left both episodes feeling sad and satisfied. Insane episodes today and can't wait for more season 4!

Mini Review #120: The Matrix (1999)

MR. ANDERSONNNNNNNN

While I have seen this movie before, it has been a long time since my last viewing. But more importantly, I watched this movie because I recently had the urge to watch the other two Matrix movies as well (and maybe the 4th but I don't know about that yet), and I thought it would be good to have a refresher. I forgot how EPIC this movie is! From the stand out and crazy visuals that literally changed cinema and action films to the grungy score, sets, and lighting. This movie is exactly what action movies are all about. The premise is insanely well put together and the reveals that keep coming are very well structured. I really enjoyed watching this movie knowing the basic premise of the Matrix as a concept because I was able to detect a lot of the foreshadowing and heavy lifting the film does early on to prepare audiences for the shock. The script was much better than I anticipated as well and all the action felt like it had a reason to happen. The directing by the Wachowski brothers (now sisters) was impeccable and everything felt like it was framed to perfection. There were a lot of really neat reflection shots in the film which felt very intentional with the duality of the Matrix and the real world but I didn't know if I was reading into it to much. I just can't get over some of the action and how cool it was. It may seem less cool now because we have had over 20 years of movies trying to imitate this one, but put yourself into the mindset of an audience member who has never seen a movie like this. The extreme wire work, the slow motion shots, the crazy karate mixed with grunge rock music, the green colour palette, it must have been so overwhelmingly cool at the time and I can see how this inspired a generation of action filmmakers. Anyways, I am excited about the next two films! I have obviously heard some negative things about them but I am going in with an open mind!

Mini Review #119: Star Trek DS9 4x1 "The Way of the Warrior: Parts 1 and 2"

Well it is here! DS9 Season 4 has arrived on the channel! I can't believe that I am already here but boy am I glad to be here. This season opener was the best season opener since The Emissary all the way back in season 1. It may very well be the best opener so far because so much insane-ness happened this episode I don't know where to start. Sisko has a bald head now so that was unexpected and brilliant. It took me about 20 minutes to warm up to his baldness but once I saw him bald in that red captains uniform I was sold. He looks so tough and commanding now. I am also glad that Yates is into bald people as I love her relationship with Sisko. And that KISS... such passion! The opening theme song is also different. It is not as slow and feels a little more dance-ish however, it also felt a little more unnerving right at the start which really set the tone for the episode because man was this episode edge of your seat stuff. The episode starts with like 1 million Klingon Warbirds docking at DS9 but the Klingons are acting strange and quiet. At first, I thought they were all Founders preparing to fight DS9 but I was so mistaken. I actually loved that the episode had no Dominion in it at all but it was just the thought of the Dominion lurking on everyone's minds that pushed the Klingon Empire into trying to conquer Cardassia. It made so much sense that an event like this would happen as Cardassia is weak through their new government rebuild but it also cemented just how scared the quadrant is of the Dominion. WORF shows up which was EPIC and I was so excited to see him! He had some great moments picking self over side in this episode and I am really excited to see how he interacts with the DS9 crew going forward.

Ok, I'll take about it. THE SPACE BATTLES WERE INSANE! Watching the Defiant blow up ships as usual with its machine gun fire phasers while saving a Cardassian ship was really cool to watch but the main event was the DS9 station itself. Seeing all 5000 of those torpedos launch at the hundreds of Warbirds was crazy epic. The music was going so ham and the model work for the explosions was unreal. The battle had so much energy to it but also so much at stake which made everything incredibly tense and stressful. Finally, I am really interested to see where this all leads. With the Klingon/Federation Peace Treaty destroyed and the Klingons refusing to leave the conquered Cardassian planets, things are looking really strained in the Alpha Quadrant at the moment. It feels like this is exactly what the Dominion wanted and I know this isn't the last conflict between Klingons and Federation fleets. It can't be there is just too much tension between them at the moment. I am so excited for what this season brings and this opening episode was incredible!!!!
