I wanted to create a track that felt like Vietnam war era rock, which means noodly guitar solos. The first part is of course derivative of Jimi Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower. I created the guitar lead parts by first programming them and then playing them one bar at a time. I'm out of practice so even that was tough, the finished timeline has lots of cuts.

Thank you for supporting another beautiful cartoon! It was great to animate Ragemelon again.
I will upload a public version for non patrons in a few days.
Next project is Crab Tab - the one I was working on before set on Pleasure Island. I still have 4 minutes or so still to animate.

It's been over 10 years since I've animated a Ragemelon cartoon and I am revelling in how much easier it is to animate characters with floating limbs and heads.
My technique for character animation in the last few years is to have a head symbol with all the head assets inside so that can move around uniformly and break the torso down into lots of layers, as represented here by colours:

This allows for smooth moves without redrawing. Head turns are contained in the head symbol so things don't get too complex.
The patreon site allowed me to paste screenshots but then deleted them from the post so i've replaced the images. If you're reading this in the e-mail you might have to click through to the post to see the images I'm referring to.

With the fruit characters its just one torso symbol and the limbs can float about. The face features are simple enough that they can just float around with the limbs.
So I'm already halfway through this one.
I would like to try some more expressive drawings that don't utilise rigs so much on a new project. I have a tendency to make characters too detailed though so I'd need to control that urge.

This one will be a little over 2 minutes long and I hope to have it finished early next month. And then it will be back to Crab Tab.

I'm back at work after my month off as of the 23rd and I've started a new project which will either be called Ragemelon: Melons in the Mekong or Ragemelon: Full Melon Jacket. Or perhaps another name if a better one can be invented. It's about Ragemelon trying to play a game of twister against his rival Admiral Melon during the Vietnam war.

The Ragemelon projects always move faster than regular cartoons because the fruit physiology is so much simpler.
I've paused Crab Tab and will resume it after I've finished this one. If you haven't seen the first part of Crab Tab and you'd like to you can watch it here.

Above is the new look crab parlour and the first big shot of the interior. The first crab parlour that got destroyed was more of a stone structure but I felt a ramshackle wooden look fitted better.
I stuck pretty closely to this drawing from the South American Swapmeat comic.
If you missed it, part 1 of this cartoon is finished and you can watch it.
And also in that post I mentioned I was pausing patreon for a month for family reasons. I will probably still get some work done on this cartoon but it won't be close to a month's worth. So no one will be billed for a cycle that started on the 23rd.
Randy makes her entrance.
I've posted these a few places so you may have seen them but I've been doing some more ink drawings recently, I'll post a few of the relevant ones below:

Peking Duck Man.

Big Gimp and Friends.

Thank you for supporting this project so far, I am very happy with Part 1.
If you want to wait for the finished project and not watch this fair enough by the way.
In 2017 I uploaded Fernando and the Disk of Chaos in three parts and it really helped me keep it together because I tend to unspool at the end of large projects.
Part 2 will be about twice as long as this but I think it should take a similar amount of time because there is more conversation and less action. Then Part 3 will get epic again. Yes, this project is huge!
Featuring the sensuous throats of:
Vonbomb as Vera the Dominatrix
Me as Randy
Tourists:
Paul Stufkosky AKA Business Orc
Winton Boushall
OceJosh
Baivo
I plan to pause patreon again for a month before August 1. It's not a work project this time, it's a family thing. Everything is all good but I'm not likely to get much done on this in August so no one will be charged.

The post contains mild spoilers. I've pretty much finished animating the first scene, though I've skipped lip syncing and don't even have dialogue for parts yet. Progress will feel faster in the second scene because there's more dialogue, the first and 3rd scenes have a fair bit of action.
I think I might change what the background lady is doing. She's picking her nose but I think I'll make her scream.
I haven't gotten enough angry tourist sounds so I'll need to change their animation when I get the appropriate growls and moans.

Vera the Dominatrix is also being pursued by rabid tourists. I suppose the rake in the door handle is superfluous if the door opens inwards.

I think this might be my first vehicle turnaround. I usually avoid drawing cars, I can only draw decent ones if I have a reference. I simplified the Pleasure Mobile by removing mirrors and underside detail to make it achievable. It's believable that the mirrors would be knocked off at one point. It should really be rusty and splattered in mud but I have to draw a line somewhere.
Here's the reveal of the crab parlour, though in the second version you can see it at the start of the shot so it's not a reveal, I'll have to tweak that.

If you missed my last post, I paused patreon last month on the 23rd for a month to do a short storyboarding job. It will resume tomorrow, the job went fine and I ended up spending a lot of the month on the cartoon anyway. The title gif above heavily referenced the spinning back kick animation I made for one of the Great Destiny Man cartoons back in 2019:

I thought it would save me time and I guess it did but it still ended up taking forever. The dude falling into the walrus pit was new of course. Here's some bean crazed tourists:

These guys behave a bit like zombies, they wander around, grunting and growling. I'm not certain what they'd do with Randy if they caught her. I'll leave that to the viewer's imagination.
I'm not certain how I'll make the perfect squeak/smear sound for the next one. I know how it should sound in my mind but not how I'll get there.

I anticipate that I'll have the first part finished over the next few weeks. I still plan to post it here when it's finished, as this is a large project and I want to be able to show progress, and it helps me mentally to treat large cartoons as a string of episodes. It's fine to skip it in favour of waiting for the finished cartoon.

The video above is storyboard -> animation for the first 6 shots, without dialogue or sound effects. If you don't want to spoil anything, maybe don't watch it, though it only shows the first 20 seconds of the cartoon. I've done more shots but these are the ones finished enough to show.
I like this guy:

I caught a cold and although it hasn't stopped me from animating, it has stopped me from voice acting. Randy has a harsh gravelly voice and I need to be in good health to voice her (same as Treshtog), and this cold is lingering. Also another film maker has asked me to act in a Randy like voice in his project and I just can't do it and it might be a while before I can.
I feel that it looks good so far, I referenced the colour palette I've used in the past but didn't adhere to it strictly. This is what the walrus pit looked like 10 years ago in 2014 when last we saw a scene there:

This was back when I did almost everything with vectors and before I started painting all of my backgrounds.
I've accepted a smallish storyboarding gig that will take about 3 weeks to do. It will earn me enough income for June so I've paused patreon from today (23 May) for 1 month (until 23 June). This is an entire billing cycle. Patreon has a "pause for 1 month" button which is convenient but the thing I don't like about it is that new members can't sign up during this time. I had it calibrated differently in the past and when I wasn't actively working on a patreon project people could still sign up but oh well. So, no one will be charged for the next month. I will still work on the project in that time but it won't be close to a full month's worth.

This one will be a doozy. I decided to throw caution to the wind and add some action shots that aren't strictly necessary to tell the story but are things I want to try or that will make the cartoon better. I haven't added any voices yet so I don't know precisely how long it will be but probably somewhere between 5:30 and 6 minutes which for me is very long. The start and end are quite dense, the middle not so much.
I only have extreme roughs to show so far. Sometimes I put more polish into storyboards but with so much to do I chose to smash through it loosely.

Drawing thumbs is step 1 of my process. This is page 1 of 4.
Next I draw them up (still in a primitive way) in Animate (formerly Flash) and add movement that can be simply expressed, camera moves etc.

Here is shots 1 to 3. Is there a more peaceful and soothing way for a story to begin?
This is an old drawing I did of a huge gimp that lives on Gimp Mountain. You'll finally be seeing him in a cartoon.

He also appears in The South American Swap Meat with a different costume. I think he is cussing Fernando out here but I'm retconning him to be non verbal, only capable of soulful groans.

Long time viewers may remember the crab parlour. It was destroyed in Pleasure Island 3 but has been rebuilt since.
I don't feel I've given too much away in this post, I may have to in subsequent posts to avoid the impression that I've gone dark, so feel free to ignore them. However, I am aiming to finish and share scene 1 for patrons only, much like I did with Fernando and the Disk of Chaos some years back. I found sharing with patrons in instalments was very helpful in motivating me to not leave things incomplete, and the more incomplete things I have to do at the very end, the more painful and difficult finishing a cartoon is, for me anyway.
Thanks for reading! I will post again when I have a few finished shots to show.

I enjoyed returning to the Manwhore Industries building, if only for a short time.

The bike animation is rotoscoped, and the sound is my bike as well.
Dissecting the catboy short:

14k views isn't so bad since I only spent 1.5 days on it, and I think if I made more people would check out the older ones. But I only have a solid idea for one more and I didn't get all that many suggestions, which suggests to me people aren't all that excited to see catboys die. Also I think subsequent episodes would probably get bigger so 1.5 days is a minimum. Might change my mind but right now I'm leaning towards not doing any more.
So I think I've gotten the shorts out of my system for now, and I've chosen a new project that wasn't in the short list I described in a recent post.
It's called Pleasure Island: Crab Tab. Someone has put crazy beans in the breakfast buffet at the resort and the tourists have turned feral. It's up to Randy to find out who and bring them to justice.
It's rather large so I put it in the "do it in the future" basket. But having done some shorter projects I feel mentally ready for the challenge. It will probably be quite long by my standards, I haven't timed it out but I'm guessing 4-5 minutes. I'm going to start it when I finish writing this so I don't have any visuals to share yet. It will be the first thing set on Pleasure Island since Pleasure Island: FINAL CLIMAX.
Also! I'm going to turn patreon off for a month either for July or August. I'll still do some animating during the month but it won't be close to a full time load.
As always thank you for supporting my creations, and if you don't care for SWEAT I'm confident Crab Tab will tickle you in the ways that matter.

I'm shelving Groanstaff to make a 30 second Fernando and Gooseman cartoon. It won' take very long.
My new idea I'm working on is doing various shorts of them and combining 3 into a compilation. This will mean a new cartoon regularly for as long as I do it. Two other ideas I have are Too Slippery! where Fernando is assaulted for his yoghurt by two muscly studs and Tony's Misty Man Den, where Gooseman tries to buy a drink but Tony thinks that he's broke.
Gazza of Penrith isn't doing very well at all and it made me re-examine Groanstaff, I very much doubt it would have more interest for people than Gazza, which I assumed would perform well because it is a parody of the Witcher.
I'll have another look at Groanstaff when some time has passed and see how I feel about it. I only spent a few days on it.
I'm considering the 9:16 frame in the storyboarding phase for the first time because of how difficult I find it to retroactively smash a 16:9 thing into a 9:16 thing. 16:9 is still the priority and I will upload that version here first.

Here's an idea for a series. If it does ok I can take suggestions from audience for how they'd like to see a catboy die. The people who love catboys get to watch catboys. The people who hate catboys get to watch catboys die. Everyone wins!

If I was really trying to ape The Wiggles I wouldn't have included a guitar solo because they don't have many of those, I thought it suited the song though, although in retrospect I should have turned the distortion down a bit. When I say "guitar solo", I played it piece by piece and stitched it together to hopefully sound like it's played in one take. I'm way too out of practice to play something like that properly, although I was never much of a soloist anyway.

I'm a big witcher fan, read the books, played Witcher 3 (not 1 & 2 though) and even watched the netflix show, so thirsty was I for witcher. I thought it'd be cool to make a witcher parody way back when I was playing the game in 2017 but didn't have a strong idea for it. The idea of making an Australian witcher comes from one of Baivo's characters in an AI fighting (and also romancing and rapping) game he programmed for discord (Baivo also voices the chicken parma guy in the second half of the cartoon).
Thank you for supporting this project! I feel like I say this almost every time but this one took longer than I expected. It's my first parody in a long time I think. Hopefully it won't piss off The Wiggles. I hope it does well because I have a probably controversial idea for a second episode involving Chakats. If you don't know what Chakats are you're better off, in fact I envy you.
For now I'm just uploading a version for patrons, so please don't share it yet. I wanted to publish it for everyone today, but my wiggles parody song is so generic that it has been Content ID'd on youtube. I've disputed it but the so called rights holder has 30 days to respond so I may not be able to upload it soon, or I may even have to make different music for the credits.

The above track is a short wiggles parody song I'm working on for the credits. I want to add a guitar solo and another verse at the end. I haven't been playing guitar much recently though...I wonder if I can pull it off. If there's no guitar solo in the track when it's finished then you'll know I could not! If you're not familiar with the Wiggles, they are a very famous Australian children's entertainment group.
This afternoon I will fix up the two remaining shots that I've left unfinished, so it should be done visually. 95% of the sound effects are in, if it's quiet I'll record some sounds today as well. I need to chug some water and simulate someone desperately writhing on a carpet.
I have been lax with the music. Because this cartoon is the first and only Gazza cartoon I have no previous tracks to use as a starting point. I'm hesitant to lean on real Witcher OSTs. So as a result I'm staring at scenes without music and I'm not sure what should be there yet.
I experimented with recutting Knife Dance, a cartoon I made in 2012, from 16:9 to 9:16 format. I noticed it was an unusually center composed cartoon so it was suitable to be smooshed into phone resolution.
I am still undecided what to make next. For a while I was toying with ideas that could be broken into shorts, because I'm aware I need to upload more often to keep interest alive while I'm working on large projects. But I struggle to work up enthusiasm for shorts. I would much rather create something longer and more meaningful and hopefully entertaining, though that seems to have less appeal than it used to.
I will describe the 4 projects at the top of my list. I don't even know for sure that I'll choose one of them but they are at the top right now. In no particular order:
Randy
In the mountains of South America Randy and Gooseman are fleeing from a criminal gang that Gooseman stole from. Also the gang leader is in love with Randy.
Length: 4 minutes ish. Might take 3 months. Not many characters but a fair bit of action.
Meth Orcs - Milk Bar
Treshtog and Fanny stop at an orc village. Fanny wants an authentic orc village experience while Treshtog just wants to drink orc milk. This one is lighter in tone and more comedic than the previous episodes.
Length: 4 minutes ish. Same as Randy, around 3 months. Less action than previous eps but there will be GNOME DANCING.
Ragemelon: Deadlock
That's right, a new Ragemelon cartoon. But this one is set during the Vietnam war. Ragemelon challenges Admiral Melon to a game of twister when he tries to court martial him.
Length: 2:00-2:30. Not a big project. Probably no more than 6 weeks.
Groanstaff
I've been tinkering with this idea for a long time. It's a medieval story about a young man looking for love who possesses a magical staff....that groans.
Length: 2:30 ish. Maybe 2 months.

Very happy with my thumbnail painting above, the shadowy figure is kinda the elf and also the dog beast, which doesn't make sense but the Elf's silhouette wasn't ominous enough. I wanted the dog beast to have eyes like that in the cartoon but apparently its too similar to the berserk dog. So no one in the cartoon has eyes like that but whatever it's a thumbnail.
I never thought the toy would take this long! It is finally ready. We did manage to have a detachable axe in the end, we do have a pouch which sits on his belt but the factory said they couldn't make it detachable because was too small for velcro and the wrong fabric.
I'm not sure which day yet but the toy will be activated this week some time and also finally I will be able to share Meth Orcs publicly (I posted it for you all while back if you missed it). Feel like I am at the end of a very long race. Enough time has elapsed I actually feel like I could start another Meth Orcs but I probably won't just yet.
I have 30 seconds left to animate for Gazza of Penrith. Not including unfinished shots, of which there are only a few. I haven't done any work on it but I have a fair idea of how the music will sound. I'm going to try and incorporate a mouth harp.

Australians might recognise this guy, he's Simon from the Wriggles. (I'm calling them the Wriggles instead of the Wiggles to help make it clear it's a parody.)

Australians might also recognise the beer labeling, it's intended to be VB or Victoria Bitter, a very distinctive and gross beer we Australians love apparently because we are disgusting gremlins.

This is Anthony the guy who likes fruit. I pulled this guitar straight out of Space Adventure Legend Quest, a series I made 12 years ago.
I will post again this week when the toy comes out with a patron discount, thanks for reading!

A deadbeat meets a genius hat.
The year was 2008. I had just finished making a series called Angry Dog for a company called Aniboom. They had an interest in acquiring series ideas and pitching them as TV shows. I pitched this idea to them near the end of their spending spree. Unlike Angry Dog, this one was never released.
I was reminded of it because I need sounds of someone walking in thongs (or flipflops) for Gazza of Penrith and I remembered I'd made some for this project. I hadn't seen it for over 10 years and couldn't remember it well. It's not that bad, lots of unforced mistakes, minimal animation, low energy music, weird colours, bad performance from me and my girlfriend voices 3 separate characters (I didn't know any other women well enough to ask). I didn't phone it in, at the time this was the best I could do.
I think it's ok for me to upload it for you guys to watch if you're interested. I don't own it and although I am a little tempted to upload it publicly (there's a pretty good chance that the people that bought this have completely forgotten about it. I don't even have their e-mail address anymore) I'd want to change some aspects of it and I don't know if it's worth it. The title painting is by Peter Yong.

The above video is animatic -> finished animation for three of the more interesting shots so far. Contains minor spoilers.
Does patreon video not work for anyone? I will add a youtube mirror if so.
Shot 1 - It's the Wriggles! I was planning on calling them the Wiggles but added the r and changed their logo to help make it clear it's a parody and I don't want to profit off their trademarks and so on. I'm avoiding using their signature hand move the "wiggle fingers" and also some of their signature phrases that I otherwise would like to. This shot was huge btw, four dancing characters, four transformations, and a bunch of other stuff.
Shot 2 - This is only half of this shot, I'll finish it when I get the dialogue for the policeman. The police car on frame left is a rig, I wanted it to rotate slightly when it's hit. I haven't done that with a vehicle to this extent before, don't know if its noticeable.
Shot 3 - I looked at a lot of casino carpets, I want to try having an interesting carpet design for this (I plan to distort what I've done across the shots rather than redraw it each time). I drew him wearing trousers and shoes in the animatic but realised he should be wearing thongs and shorts, which is why there's a note in there. I want the sound of thongs to be distinct in that shot, I might have to record my own. I've done no sound effects yet and I haven't started thinking about the music. It will be a challenge because I can't use any witcher themes and my music software doesn't have the distinctive witcher instruments that they use.
I've written two things I'm interested to make recently:
Pleasure Island: Crab Tab - Someone has put crazy beans in the breakfast buffet at the Pleasure Island resort. Randy has to find out who did it and bring them to justice. If she succeeds, Vera will pay her crab debts.
Meth Orcs: Gun Imp - A more or less direct sequel to Inflates you Big and Round. Fanny Ranger meets her biggest fan while Treshtog is targeted by assassins. (Also there's a gun with an imp)
Both of these ideas around 950 words which for me is very daunting. I'm usually comfortable with anything 750 words or less and I know anything more will take a long time. Both are probably in the vicinity of 4:30 -5:30 in length.
Having just completed an epic 4:30 Meth Orcs I don't know if I'm mentally up for another big one yet. Also I worry that spending 3 months on a cartoon is what people imagine when they make a pledge on patreon. On the other hand, none of my recent shorts have gotten any traction. I rarely regret making the longer cartoons when they're finished. My sweet spot is 2:30 -3:00, like Where Did the Gnomes Go? , but I struggle to write ideas that excite me that are that short. Would you prefer a doozy every 3 months or a mix? (I think I asked this before a few years ago and people said a mix) I will see how things go with the new Meth Orcs when I upload it for everyone to see. Gazza of Penrith looks like it will be somewhere betwen 2:00 - 2:30, which feels very achievable although it's quite action packed.

My throat finally recovered enough for me to sing this without retching.
This will replace the music that currently plays after the cartoon ends.
Lyrics:
Oh Mirnag, I miss you
Even though you said I smell bad
And now that you're gone
I'm going to have a bath
Your tongue was sharp your skin was green
Fom day one you were quite mean
And now I'm alone
I'm going to have a bath
You died for a chest of quartz
Your skin did not have many warts
And now I am sad
I'm going to have a bath
Mirnag you lie in the dirt
I think of words you said that hurt
And now I am clean and
There's nothing you can say

If you missed my last post, Meth Orcs is finished, check it out.
Shot is almost finished, I want to go over the beer in the glass as its a bit primitive and his hand looks a bit wooden when it moves, also I'm thinking of changing his trousers to shorts. His lips will move when he answers the phone, I haven't done any audio for this yet.
Generally this design is too complex but for the first couple of shots he just talks on the phone and drinks so it's fine, I've done most of it already. For the rest of the cartoon where he is a lot more mobile I will need to simplify his design because making him do basic things is taking too long.
I had fun with the background, the paintings on the wall are a selection from my saved images folder that have spoken to me over the past few years, with the exception of the one behind his head which is my discord pfp.

I've attached "oh mirnag verse 1.mp3" to this post, it's the first verse of the credits song I want to make for Meth Orcs to replace what is currently there.
I intended to record all four verses today, but I have come up against a physical limitation I didn't know I have. My throat is healed from the flu but it seems that singing in Treshtog's voice makes me retch after a short time. I will try again on Monday when I have the place to myself, after all it is only 4 short verses and I think it will be worth the discomfort.
It looks like we will not have a final Treshtog prototype until late February. The factory is about to take a few weeks off for Chinese New Year, and the latest version I saw today still needs a few alterations. I wanted to be able to detach the axe from his back and slip it into his fist so he could hold it. And for a few months that seemed fine but now it turns out they can't do that. We are going to try velcro on his palms. But they can't colour match the velcro to his skin until after the holiday. I will wait rather than launching before the toy is ready. I'm very keen to publish it but in the grand scheme of things a few weeks doesn't matter, I know I will regret it if I rush things.

Thank you for supporting this project and being patient with how long it took! I fully expected it to take me 2 or 3 weeks less than it did. I'm not even sure how it blew out so bad. The next Meth Orcs I'd like to make is a bit shorter.
I'm not going to make it public yet, I would like to wait until the Treshtog toy is ready. The factory has made a couple of examples. The bodies look great but they are having trouble with the head.
I was planning on making a song in Treshtog's voice for the credits, but I'm ill right now so my throat can't manage it. I tried but I kept coughing and almost barfing.
Shady Investors and Board Members please let me know if I've missed you and I'll upload a new version, my brain is overheated atm. Also Baltazar if you read this please send me your reference pics so I can draw you on the board for the public version.

Because I'm near the end there is not an awful lot I can share without spoiling plot points. I've been posting gifs on discord with spoiler tags but patreon doesn't have that function.

Spoiler: Treshtog waves a bloody axe around at one point.

Spoiler: the horses get spooked.
I am up to the climax sequence at the end. I've spent a bit over 2 months on this now, which is standard for the last 3 episodes of this series unfortunately. I did hope to be finishing it around now.

Purpleboy is ready for action. His name is Draven but no one refers to him by his name so he may as well be Purpleboy.

This is how much I have to go. When I get to the end I will still need to do music, sound effects and finish shots/add polish. Thank you for persevering through this long project. I have no regrets regarding the last two Meth Orcs which both took an intense effort so I'm hoping this one will be no different.
Merry christmas if you celebrate it!

I've animated 2:30 of what will be a bit over 4 minutes. But that includes a dense cluster of action in the middle, which I think has come out well.

I have all the voices (though I haven't cut a lot of them up but I'm confident I have all I need from the actors). I'm up to date with backgrounds. I haven't really started thinking about music yet beyond the first minute. I'd like to make a nice track for the credits as well but I'm waiting for some inspiration to hit me.
Here's a before and after for Treshtog throwing a rock.

He doesn't have much time for archery.
A lot of people are receiving their Gooseman plush toys this week. It's nice to see a steady stream of photos come through, they are going out well before christmas which is nice.
The toy factory made a first version of a Treshtog toy, I don't think I'm supposed to share the pictures, it is not there yet though, I made lots of notes on it. Most of the body is good but the head needs a fair few adjustments.

Here is our elf antagonist looking inside a chest full of meth. This took way longer than I thought it would. I think I will make the chest glow more sparkly and cool looking. I don't know why I went straight to pink. It goes nicely with the elf's skin, but it could be any colour, even a rainbow like in the inflation ep where you see some meth get blown up:

I've started thinking about a cartoon where Randy is the main character. I've had this idea for ages about two characters being pursued in the mountains after stealing some crazy beans. One of them is Gooseman who keeps eating the beans and waving his gun around. I assumed the other would be Fernando but it might be interesting if it was Randy instead. She's only been the main character once back in 2011. Anyway, not sure if I'll do that but a number of people ask for a Randy toy and it would be weird to make one when she's barely been in anything since 2014.

Dairymancer MP4
I wanted a sinister surfy sound for the Teal Mist theme, I mostly used the instruments from the tense conversation track in Sweet Boy Beach. I like the chillwave drum kit.
Fernando's Dairymancer theme is a simple repetition, I made it as a placeholder but it was so suitable I didn't end up changing much about it.
