Added 2024-08-15 15:03:51 +0000 UTCOh, this day can’t get any fucking worse!
It wasn’t hard to pick up on what happened, there was only one space mage currently gunning for him and the idea that Rook had found him and teleported behind to attack wasn’t unbelievable, even if it was still outrageous. With his thoughts moving at their maximum he processed what had happened, using all the information available to him.
It was obvious he had been teleported underground and based on what he could tell from the effects of bind, Thera was somewhere beneath his feet. Since he knew the man’s skill level and total mana, he knew he couldn’t be more than a hundred meters down when the guy could see where he was teleporting which meant that as it had happened, the immortal had changed his orientation, flipping Ben on his head to try to make him think up was down to waste whatever time and mana he would before figuring it out.
It wasn’t a bad plan either but it suffered too many flaws from what Rook couldn’t know. He’d attacked when Ben was finished fighting but unlike the last time he still had over a thousand points of mana left to spare and he had no clue that Thera would know where he was as well, feeling the same link that bound them.
Which meant he really only needed to last until she found him but he didn’t want to discount the possibility that he’d do something to her as well, teleporting her away to keep her from helping him or whatever other stupid thing he might try, meaning he needed to start getting himself out of there through his own power before he ran out of air and with the mana he had left he began to spend it.
The dirt around him began to move and his body with it, sliding over him and shifting in a way that made him feel like he was being warmed by ants as it slowly pulled him up, shifting past the tonnes of stuff above while he crawled higher, feeling his lungs burn as the seconds went on.
Spending a bit more mana, he condensed some of the surrounding dirt to give him some breathing room before materializing the mix of gasses his body craved, letting him breathe for a bit before continuing but losing the need to go on with the dirt he was moving through pulling away, Thera having made it down and lifting him from the pit below.
“This has not been the best day,” He sighed as her mana pulled him from the depths to her arms.
“I really wish you had something more to say about a second attempt on your life.”
“What else is there to say? Did you shoot that asshole off again?”
“No, your new friend is keeping him busy. I can see why she freaks Yuzu out.”
Thera nodded to the side where a bizarrely comical scene was taking place, one where it looked like a formless mass of grey flesh was continually chasing a teleporter until finally catching and eating them, only for them to pop away thanks to their magic soon after and repeating again and again without end.
“Stop trying to eat me you psychotic bitch!” Rook screamed, his clothing soaked in saliva and digestive fluids. “I’m not here for you!”
“You’re here to be a pain in the ass!” The mass, Abel yelled back despite her current form lacking any obvious mouth. “Don’t get in the way of my fun! You know how hard it is to get anyone to play with me?”
…Okay, if she’s going to say stuff like that then I can spar her a couple more times in the future.
“Ben, I can see you being a bleeding heart and if she eats you, you're getting no sympathy.”
“Will I still get healing though?”
“Obviously, just don’t make it a habit.”
Their small back and forth was enough to catch the ears of the two in the midst of their chase, bringing it to an end with Abel making her way over first, her form shifting back to the more human-like one it seemed she’d wear in that world.
“Don’t worry number two, if he gives you any trouble again just let me know,” She told Ben proudly. “I’m pretty sure I can figure out how to digest him eventually.”
“Pah, you’re not that good,” Rook spat as he walked over, prompting Yuzu to join their side and give a disapproving glare while Abel only looked excited.
“Stay in my stomach then. I’d love to see which of us comes out on top.”
“Go screw yourself. And you, kid! You see you're outclassed too so give up and get lost while I’m still being nice here!”
“Are you really still going to try and hit on Thera while you’re covered in stomach acid?”
“I could be covered head to toe in pure shit and it wouldn’t matter. Doesn’t matter what fancy second-tier skill you have, only one of us is a god and if you get in my way I’m going to make sure only one of us ever gets to be a god, you hear me?”
“Sure, loud and clear, we just need the go-ahead from the only person that actually matters here. Thera, you heard mister god over there, do you want him more?”
“Ben, if he kills you then I’m doing everything I can to make sure the gods hold him accountable even if it means I get to the second tier of sacrilege and if that’s still not enough I’m hitting him so hard he ends up in the sun. There’s literally nothing he can do to convince me to choose him over you.”
Rook backed up a step as she said it but he still glared their way. “Bah, you say that now but I’ve heard of you girly. You have what? A few thousand years ahead of you, maybe more? This guy’s going to be dead before you know it. Pick someone who’s actually going to be around to enjoy ‘cause even if you don’t give in now, you’ll just come looking for me in the future.”
“Then you can keep dreaming about that future. Anyway-” Mid-sentence she spent her power, catching Rook off guard as the force of her blow shot him out into the distant ocean before he could react with his magic. “I’m personally about done for the day. Yuzu, can we walk you back anywhere before we turn in? I just want to lay down and relax after all of that.”
“Sure, but we really do need to do something about Verbum first.”
“Oh, if you’re all done let me take him!” Abel yelled. “I’ve barely gotten to speak to Verbs at all, he can keep me entertained once he wakes up!”
“...Okay, that’s probably fine,” Thera said while Yuzu nodded, both girls thinking about how much he wasn’t going to like that when he came to.
“Just no taking bites out of him without his consent, okay?”
“Ah, he’s only good for intelligence anyway. Even if he gives a lot of it, there’s not much I can use it for. You on the other hand-”
“No, thank you but I’m going to pass. Now come on guys, let’s get out of here before Rook sorts himself out.”
Dragging both Ben and Thera along like she was trying to run away, they heard Abel yell about seeing them again tomorrow while Ben caught sight of her hoisting Verbum over her shoulder while they left, with Thera looking to Yuzu as she did.
“So, have you actually let her get a bite out of you before?”
“I gave her some of my blood in the past like Ben did,” She admitted. “I was trying to understand how her soul worked with Elvat because it’s, well, weird but potentially useful if any of her stranger effects could be induced in a normal one and that was how we all discovered that not only do soul mages give her bonuses to all of her attributes, but especially to her weeping. Seeing as how that’s her most important one and there don’t seem to be many good sources for it, she wants to get more every single time.”
“Oh, yeah I can see why that would be hard to deal with, and… Ben?”
“Hmm? Yeah?”
“You okay? You seem quiet.”
“Ah, yeah, I’m fine. Just a lot on my minds.”
This guy’s going to be dead before you know it.
Despite himself, after everything else that had gone on that day, Rook's words had ended up echoing around Ben’s head, ringing all the more true when combined with his otherwise uncertain future.

How does Ben even get telaported against his will with how high his resistance to space is? Would it not tank his mana pool this guy only has one teir three skill so his mana pool shouldn't be high enough to over come Ben's resistance and even if he did why doesn't Ben just make something to make telaporting him harder? Can we plz 🙏 stop nerfing Ben please.

2024-08-16 08:43:16 +0000 UTCAssuming Ben is right and Rook's Immortality is based on Healing Enhancement, then if he were somehow injured through Abolute Defence then his Immortality would simply heal him before he could die or straight tank the hit in a "heal as you cut" kind of way. It is an assumption and is subject to all relevant caveats. Perhaps if he were to make a weapon capable of piercing a perfect defense, an Absolute Defense, then he could make it in such a way that it would shatter while cutting, but after piercing, and leave behind energetic material to forcibly liquify him.
Carl Mason
2024-08-16 08:35:03 +0000 UTCI just had another thought, sorry if I am being annoying. The system names skills based on precedent, thus the difficulty naming Abel skills, with it appearing without context for this reality. What is the precedent for immortals on that reality? I’d argue the gods are the precedent for immortality. The call their followers "mortals", which implies immortality for the gods. But the gods need faith to survive (a type of sustenance) and can be killed via violence. If the system named Rook’s skill following that precedent, then Rook would still need to eat and could have been violently killed, before the advent of absolute defence. On absolute defence though, I have to point out that "absolute" is not the end all be all for the system. Ben went from "absolute thought speed" to "unnatural thought speed". Maybe an "unnatural" means of attack could kill Rook?

2024-08-16 01:53:53 +0000 UTCI'm really looking forward to it. The only problem is I'm not so sure he'd SUFFER there, ya know? I'm hoping some of the otherdiimensional matter he can create will actually do Rook harm... but creating enough of it may qualify as a Weapon of Mass Destruction.

2024-08-16 01:40:25 +0000 UTCHe his close to second tier in space magic though. By the standards of this world, that is pretty good. I think I remember that the average person can expect to get to the fifth or sixth level of their core skills they focus on.

2024-08-16 01:28:07 +0000 UTCI am adding a note here to clarify my thoughts, though I understand that immortality may make it impossible for him to die at all, since we do not know the skills that went into his immortality upon awakening, I keep a healthy dose of skepticism about the specific type of immortality he has access to. Sure, they say he "can’t die", but that is vague, and impossible to prove inherently. You can only "prove" a negative by trying constantly and never succeeding. Rook sure as hell won’t let anyone try to kill him for long, so he himself likely is not aware of the specifics of his immortality. Previous failure to me does not mean hopeless future.
Demolug
2024-08-16 01:24:18 +0000 UTCCan’t die naturally maybe. But damage was a thing at some point, even with immortality, otherwise he would not have needed absolute defence as a skill. That tells me immortality as a skill by itself is not absolute, and we just need to understand what is not covered by absolute defence to figure out how to kill him.

2024-08-16 01:08:31 +0000 UTCHere we are in the middle of a generous month of non stop releases and nearly all the comments are complaints. Oof. I still appreciate what we've been given, even Rook. Story-wise he does have his uses, and I'll be quite interested in how Ben will deal with an immortal. So many possibilities and I hope Ben settles on something exotic. That said, when someday you go through and do a remaster, I'd like to say that this chapter is a prime candidate for a callback to the very first prologue chapter where Ben and friends got stuck in a cave to die. Maybe just a sentence or two would do, as I'm not actually sure how traumatizing it was for him (he did go out sitting in a corner drawing if I recall), but I don't think he's yet had the chance to confront that beyond just repressing it.

2024-08-15 18:28:07 +0000 UTCThat's what confuses me the most: t3 mortals are valued BECAUSE they can whreck demons on a large scale, that or they can enable others to slaughter loads of demons (like the divine chef, the soul mages and our lovely soulsmith Yeti). But Rook isn't even a decent tank. Because he can't protect others all that well, he can only keep himself save. Finally: he can't even ascent, hence his value as a future god is exactly zero. Most t2 fighters and mages provide a higher value... heck he isn't even just useless, he is messing with the folks that benefit the war efforts.
Michigo
2024-08-15 18:23:48 +0000 UTCWhat gave it away? The fact that his mad apostle (currently grinding evil intent and the frickin world killer job) could blast the whole planet to pieces on an ill intented whim? And yes, that's the amount of raw destruction Ben can already inflict within seconds. Much lower skills and a few million MP could blast the everyliving bajesus out of 3 demon worlds surfaces... and he leveled up quite a bit and gained access to practically unlimited MP. => Ben should just ask his space spirit uncle in law for a small favor. Then use Rook for target practice for world ending attacks somewhere in outer space, i'm telling ya: the actualized bucket of popcorn would be the cherry on top.
Michigo
2024-08-15 18:16:40 +0000 UTCRook is the least valuable t3 on the planet. All he can really do is survive, he adds nothing else of value to the table. But the goal is to massacre untold amounts of high tier demons, and those will quickly learn to ignore him. Warfare 101: ignore the immortal tank, and focus fire the mad apostle and his meteor slinging princess.
Michigo
2024-08-15 18:05:22 +0000 UTCNot really, Rook can't ascend to godhood... because to do so he would need to die. All he can really do is be useful as an unkillable tank with subpar attack skills at one of those pesky invasion points. His value in terms of the war efforts is pretty neglectable. Why? Well: all high tier demons will quickly learn to ignore Rook. You know, the exact the opposite of what they usually do when encountering Ben.
Michigo

Rain
2024-08-15 17:48:09 +0000 UTCIt depends. His absolute defense might not help him against stuff like starvation etc. Being a god of survival on the other hand should cover such attack vectors (that and i guess actual gods can only be starved by a lack of faith).
Michigo
2024-08-15 17:47:04 +0000 UTCIt might be much easier to get rid of him. I mean lets say he can't be killed, but he is still mortal. Does he need food, water, something to keep his mind busy (to avoid going bananas), etc? His space magic isn't that advanced, hence "spiriting" him away a bunch of light years could already be enough. Obviously this wouldn't be very satisfying, hence that poor fool will most likely be sentenced to *shudder* Ben.
Michigo
2024-08-15 17:44:28 +0000 UTCCan’t die or can’t age? Simply can’t die would not need absolute defence so I have the reflex of thinking he does require sustenance. As for passives not needing mana, not necessarily. Ben’s demonic body skill explicitly feeds on Ben’s mana for it’s effects.
Demolug
2024-08-15 17:42:33 +0000 UTCI still say Ben can just materialize stuff in his stomach and blow him up, or have Ogilt hold him down and see if he can use he sacrilege to pierce him, if he can actually cut him with sacrilege the can actually farm him for parts after all if immortality came from a healing skill then he should be able to regenerate.
JC.Angel
2024-08-15 17:37:06 +0000 UTCI doubt Rook is inmune to damage it just would take lot, so if Ben uses his jacket he should be able to damage or kill, I assume he won’t uses it, but at least he’s already planning to kill him.
JC.Angel
2024-08-15 17:26:29 +0000 UTCEdit: Ben felt like he was "warmed" by ants. Probably needs an 'S'. At this point Ben's just collecting ammunition with which to convince the gods and other Tier threes to let him kill Rook. At worst I figure he should be able to figure out a way to imprison Rook - sure he's got his space magic and absolute defense, but if he can figure out a way to interdict the space magic he can prevent his escape even if he's not directly contesting absolute defense... once he's imprisoned then he can be shipped off to a black hole or a sun. Though there might be some danger to that - since this is a universe where stars have ecosystems, we don't want him adapting to life on the sun and getting stronger - we also don't want to piss off the residents of the sun by inflicting Rook on them... As for the interdicting the space magic - maybe with the help of the space spirit he could develop some sort of collar/trap that redirects all outgoing space magic back to the center...

2024-08-15 17:17:34 +0000 UTCİs it more sacrilegious to steal a potential of a god or letting him become one than killing him. Ben can always seal his soul into a crystal or something after all.
SacredSteel
2024-08-15 17:05:32 +0000 UTCHe's definitely got a lot of mana - he's had centuries to grow his mana and he's third tier which is something like a 3x multiplier on the baseline... 2024-08-15 16:39:50 +0000 UTCImmortality makes it so he can't die. Absolute defense is what makes it so he can't be hurt. Without absolute defense he could be hurt like anyone else but he just won't die. They also sound like passive skills so mana is not necessary.

2024-08-15 16:34:42 +0000 UTCIt would take an enchantment being able to interact with his soul directly. Is rule Bender an active skill? If "yes" then potentially with the church. If no then surprise portal to the hells might still be better. Rook would definitely come back from there eventually though given the synergy between absolute defense, immortality, and an affinity for space magic. (I especially think that the space magic at their 3 would let him get himself back to the right dimension without a ritual). It would also be interesting if Ben could only get him by applying "buffs" to a deadly degree but I feel like that's also covered in absolute defense
Corvusamous
2024-08-15 16:34:31 +0000 UTCJust make a bullet out of the dead outsider corpse material and shoot it in Rook's face (at the meeting just to prove the point). 2024-08-15 16:23:19 +0000 UTCA couple "improve my space resistance" rings would be a fine first draft. Keep in mind that Ben also understands gates better than anyone alive. Ben can probably put one on a ring.

2024-08-15 16:19:41 +0000 UTCThoughts on immortality. My understanding here is that though no attack can harm his body, pierce it or watever, because of absolute defence, it does not prevent his surroundings from being changed (he is able to be punted away). What happens in a vacuum? Does he need to breathe/eat? Are all of his body’s needs fulfilled by his mana by the immortality skill? If his mana fuels his immortality, is the effect of the mana-sucking material cancelled by absolute defence? Can a tomb/collar or watever else of the stuff cancel out part of his immortality? I’d assume poison would not work, his absolute defence likely filtering what comes in.

2024-08-15 15:39:32 +0000 UTCI believe the author is suffering from the effects of power creep. He gave Ben so many advantages that it’s hard to give him any conflict that doesn’t feel contrived or as a result of MC making really dumb choices for the sake of plot

2024-08-15 15:39:11 +0000 UTCAlso isn’t his space magic resistance like 80 or something? Rook is only first tier at space magic so it doesn’t make sense that he can teleport Ben against his will. 2024-08-15 15:37:38 +0000 UTCGotta get some anti-space magic gear Ben. Seriously. It's starting to feel like the only reason he doesn't have it is because Turnip has some plot point where he needs Rook to zap Ben AGAIN. There's no rational reason Ben hasn't turned into a spacial anchor big enough to hold the Death Star in place. This is a plot hole, please patch it. It isn't even that hard to justify Rook having some space magic maguffin that pierces whatever defense Ben whips up the first time. Rook has been around A LONG TIME. He'll have accumulated some nice gear, perhaps even some mythic whatsis a space magic god whipped up just for him to be able to get through whatever might be trying to lock him down.

2024-08-15 15:36:42 +0000 UTCI agree. It’s a very annoying and boring plot point. An immortal would take the long view and just wait for Ben to die. It’s not interesting especially since this is the second arrogant character to do this exact situation of trying to kill Ben so he can have Thera

2024-08-15 15:35:55 +0000 UTCIf this guy doesn't turnout to be a way of levling sacrilege, I can see him ending up being dumped in the hell dimension.

2024-08-15 15:30:47 +0000 UTCI guess, I just thought between the other contenders and the Gods, there would be a smidge of concern about an killer who can't be contained. Bare minimum, shunning.

2024-08-15 15:29:18 +0000 UTCI think the issue with holding him accountable is that they literally can’t do anything to him. No one knows how to kill the man.

2024-08-15 15:23:40 +0000 UTCI just cannot stand Ben's passive nature here. The whole situation is an infuriating waste of time and energy, and I hope we never see Rook again.

2024-08-15 15:22:20 +0000 UTCJust kill him already Ben!!!!

2024-08-15 15:20:34 +0000 UTCI thought of a really cheap, fairly anticlimactic end. The Great Space Spirit is basically Ben's bitch. Preeeettty sure it'll do almost anything he asks after saving it and its entire race. Rook can teleport, yea, but Ben just mentioned how his max distance aint very far. So have the GSS teleport Rook half a solar system away, problem solved. Even if Rook eventually, one day, manages to make it back one tiny teleport at a time, we are talking millions of years. . But that plan wont get Ben any Skill levels, so I dont see it happening lol.

2024-08-15 15:18:39 +0000 UTCI don't get how everyone is okay with Rook just casually being a murderhobo. If he is bale to get away with it simply because he is powerful, why isn't it not okay to murder other powerful/useful people (Ben).

2024-08-15 15:17:53 +0000 UTCI’m surprised with both encounters with Rook teleporting Ben that he hasn’t called out to myriad with one of his code reds for help

2024-08-15 15:15:01 +0000 UTCSadly Ben hasn't made a kill the immortal plan yet.

2024-08-15 15:14:20 +0000 UTCReally surprised with this doormat routine he's got going on. No reaction? Really? He's plotting, sure but really?

2024-08-15 15:14:01 +0000 UTCOh man, I was having such a fun time and then that ending brought me down. Why do we have to be reminded that Ben is effectively living under a death sentence?

2024-08-15 15:13:39 +0000 UTCHonestly Ben just grab your jacket and start fucking rook up, even if he won't die he can at least intimidate rook.
