The Cartoons That Made Us Gay: Animaniacs

“Moon Over Minerva” (October 28, 1993)

Deemed too sexy for TV, Minerva Mink was the least-utilized of the Animaniacs recurring characters. And that’s too bad, because having a female character like this is a nice way to fix the problem of the total lack of female representation in the original Looney Tunes. We do spend a good chunk of time looking at all the ways Looney Tunes descendants and spinoffs have attempted to add female characters to the mix, but if we’re being honest, the reason we’re doing this is because of Wilford Wolf, the sexiest dogman in the history of western animation.

Watch the pilot for Julie Brown’s sitcom, directed by David Mirkin.

Watch the segment with Minerva's disappearing/reappearing cleavage over on Drew's Twitter.

Slappy was my favorite character by far: “Ah shoot me.” Re: “You’re home so we’re just here to fuck with you.” Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games”! Terrifying but accurate comparison to Animaniacs. Lol.

OH, MY GOD. Minerva Mink looking for the suave Wilford Wolf underwater is the reason why I spent my entire childhood thinking “olly olly oxen free” was “olly olly oxygen free.” I’d always wondered why and how I could have misheard and misunderstood that phrase so badly, but this was certainly the first time I heard it, and that’s actually what she said! Another mystery solved thanks to Gayest Episode Ever. Well worth the $5 a month for the closure alone.

Animaniacs is one of my favorite shows. At age 30 I finally went to my first nerd convention and I met Rob Paulson and he is one of the kindest and funniest people I ever met. I agree. I wish they had more of the older writers like Sheri stoner. There were so many talented women working on the original show. But I agree with the criticims overall.
