Sewers of Paris: Secrets Kill (Ep 378 - Disaster films/Christopher Rice)

My guest this week on The Sewers of Paris is New York Times bestselling author Christopher Rice, whose new book Sapphire Sunset is a passionate, steamy gay romance. Christopher didn’t think he’d grow up to be a writer, despite coming from a literary family — both his parents are authors, his mother most famously for Interview with the Vampire among many other works; but Christopher was an adult when he discovered that writing fiction gave him the opportunity to tell the stories that he wanted to read — stories informed by his childhood love of chaos and camp.

I have always been a fan of the vampire 🧛‍♀️ story. Which is why I love Stephen King, and i was talking to another book lover about something new in a vampire book, and he told me about interview with the vampire. Stephen King has gay characters, Ann Rice made the gay character the center of the book. I started reading Joe Hill without even knowing who his father was and when I found out about Chris I just had to read his book and have been. But I grew up with these disaster movie and they were all a little bit over the top action. Because noone wants reality in their disaster movies. Soap operas are something I used to Watch with my mother, general hospital 🏥 being the best. Luke and Laura. But hopefully one day someone will do a gay story that doesn't focus on straight acting white people. We don't live in a world that's all white or all black or Asian. So why should all gay stories be like that. This was a fantastic interview. Thanks again for all of the hard work you put into this podcast 👍

I would go even one step further in terms of the gay coding etc. in the film. In many films of this area, those who live and die were often determined by how they are perceived on a "moral social" scale - Robert Wagoner dies in this movie while having an affair. There is this hideous film from the 70's where nature somewhere in the South runs amuck. The gay guy dies, the rich people with too much hubris die. Would be an interesting thesis to write.
