Bonus Video! More of Soap's censored jokes, and ABC's staff psychic

I generally don't side with the network censors, but it turns out that there were a couple of jokes in the first few episodes of Soap that ... well, taking them out was indeed a good call, as it turns out. But the rest of the censors' notes are pretty bad! In this week's bonus video, I'll share what I've been able to reconstruct of what was removed. Plus! The strange story of ABC's staff psychic, who offered some predictions about Three's Company, Soap, and Taxi.

Oh that's amazing. I'll check out that scene!

If you’re thinking about doing something with Beverly Hills 90210, I’m so excited! There’s a plot that made me realize I’m bisexual when I was 14. The character David inadvertently advertises a dance to a group of lesbians on a college chat room and they come to the dance. There is a fire at the dance and Kelly gets trapped with one of the lesbians, Allison, who develops an attraction to her, even though Kelly is straight. They explain this as due to trauma but also kinda make Allison into a conniving lesbian who broke up with her partner because she doesn’t know when she has a good thing. They sort of rehabilitate Allison. It’s a weird plot, but it was the first time I had seen lesbians or any women addressing attraction to each other especially over multiple episodes so it was important.

Oh my goodness, thank you for the heads up about this -- I'll definitely check out those biographies.

I adore Soap and loved your video on it! Not sure if this fits into the scope of your Dynasty video, but I recently read Mark Griffin and Sara Davidson's biographies on Rock Hudson, who had AIDS at the time he was cast on the show, and there's an interesting story about how terrified he was to kiss Linda Evans because it was still unknown at the time if open-mouthed kissing could transmit the virus. Rock tried to think of how he could avoid it (his diagnosis was still a secret) but ultimately he did every mouthwash and gargle he could and gave the actress a super close-mouthed, quick kiss, which apparently was awkward onscreen. When he finally disclosed his illness, some Dynasty fans were furious that he didn't warn Evans beforehand, but people working on the show, including Evans, understood his dilemma and were just sad that their friend was dying. 💔

A quick FYI - the embedded video worked this time as well as last time. 🎉

As someone who was very much alive and watching tons of TV at the time, I can tell you that, as censored as Soap may have been, when it came to the gay content, it was STILL considered really scandalous. Just the teaser, of Billy Crystal spreading butter on his toast in a very effeminate manner, was enough to shock people and definitely make them talk about it the next day by the water cooler. I NEVER missed an episode. In fact, my whole family would get together and watch - it was must-see tv.
