Thats actually why Satella prevents Subaru from talking about return by death. If other people know what the trigger is then they can abuse it for their own benifit (like roswaal tries to do here)

Always found it interesting how Beatrice called her shadow magic, the one named Minya, to be “crystal arrows of stagnation”. Which alludes to her own state at this moment in time. Garfiel didn’t immediately transform into his tiger form because of Ram. He found himself at a crossroads, torn between his survival instincts and his rational mind. Every fiber of his being screamed for him to transform to ensure his survival, but his mind wouldn’t let him. If he shifted, the healing magic he was casting would stop, and Ram would surely die. So, he held back and stayed in his human form. Regarding Emilia and the snowstorm. Roswaal explained that the snowstorm was meant to turn the villagers and Garfiel against her. This wasn’t the first time an out-of-season snowstorm had appeared in connection with Emilia. We saw that in the Memory Snow OVA, where funny enough — the REAL Black Serpent also appeared (the dark bile that was swallowing everything? Emilia and Puck seemed to destroy the whole thing, but Puck actually specifically mentioned in the novels that it was only a segment of it — so it’s still roaming the overworld out there somewhere). The Memory Snow OVA actually has a lot more connection to Season 2, you’ll end up really glad you watched it before you started this season. Prior to this, Garfiel had informed Subaru when he first saw him that both the villagers and demi-human residents had gathered inside the cathedral (where the villagers were already using as a temporary shelter during their time here) as refuge against the snowstorm. When the rabbits appeared earlier than expected, Roswaal pointed out that aside from his spell containing a massive amount of mana — demi-human blood was also rich with mana. With so many demi-humans gathered in the cathedral, it created a mana-rich environment that the rabbits found irresistible. Quite a bit of non-spoiler and super contextual cut content here. Unlike where the anime ended, the novel continued in describing Subaru’s rush to reach Emilia. The moment Roswaal died, Subaru sprinted toward her, hearing the distant screams of the villagers drowned out by the sound of the rabbits. To clear his way, Subaru called upon the remaining Ryuzu clones, sending them to intercept the rabbits, causing them to explode in a manner similar to Garfiel’s previous tactic against the Witch of Envy. As Subaru ran, he came across a building engulfed in flames. It took him a moment to recognize it—the Cathedral. People were supposed to be inside, sheltering there. But the building was burning. Subaru froze. He realized then that the villagers, residents, Ryuzu, and even Otto had chosen to end their lives in the fire, seeing it as an easier fate than being consumed by the rabbits. At that moment, Subaru couldn’t bring himself to blame them. This was a hell of his own making, and this burning cathedral was a portrait of that hell. Hence why this loop was infamous in the novels for being the “hell” loop.

I didn’t pick it up my first time either. But yeah, if Roswaal knew what the trigger was, Subaru would probably be in a lot more trouble then he could ever imagine.

That line was really cool, I'm excited to see where it goes. There's so much building about... Something like... Obsession as a means of escape? False salvation?

Alex G

It makes perfect sense now. I guess overall that's a good thing that he doesn't know the trigger

Alex G

It was a rough idea for me too. Even more sobering was the realization that to some degree I've been proud of that very thing. I think it was March Comes in Like a Lion and Haikyuu that laid the groundwork for me to be able to hear the idea in a new light

Alex G

The "jump-to-another-line-at-exactly-the-point-where-I-most-need-to-see-things-through" speech was a little disturbingly on the mark for me. Guess I have some serious thinking to do.

Ryan

I've rewatched this show 3 times and I don't know how I never inferred that Roswall didn't know the reset "trigger". I was like Alex where I always wondered what he was implying when he said he couldn't kill him

Aaron Ong

I don't know or remember if it's confirmed ever. But my take away is roswell knows subaru gets to reset time/The world in some way but he doesn't know how it's done. He beats Subaru and asks why haven't you reset? He then says he can't kill him else this would be for nothing. Based on that is sounds like Roswell thinks the reset is just something Subaru can activate and threatening him with beatings is him trying to make him trigger it. He would therefore not want to kill him else he thinks he would stop the loop if he did so. If roswell knew killing him did the reset then he wouldn't have done the beatings or say we ran out of time with the rabbits. Also the rabbits appear because of mana roswell is the one making the snow so they were attracted to his location not Emilia. I think the Emilia here is basically the end result of roswells plan. She states she kept doing the trial over and over because she was alone with no one with her so she stayed in that room repeatedly getting mentally messed up from whatever the trial is for her. Meanwhile roswell used the snow to make the village hate her (thinking she was doing it) so she had nowhere to recover, garth also thought it was her so he was just waiting to berate her for it right outside the door, then she also didn't have Subaru to defend her from these accusations or have any shoulder to lean on in a time of need. She spiraled to a crazy idea that if she Brute forced the trial she would stop all this bad stuff and Subaru would come back (she thought he gave up on her too). We get to see a mentally broken Emilia thanks to roswells schemes if Subaru just dips. (Imo it's like one of those visual novel endings where the love intrest goes crazy bad ends)

Hard to believe but this season just keeps getting better from here. But the writing has to be this good if best girl is just going to sleep through it.

Douglas Davis

That Emilia scene is so great. After all the horrible things Subaru has seem in that run... He's gotta come back to this

Alex G

Ah that makes sense now why Roswall says he can't kill Subaru. Thanks!

Great episode it’s crazy to see that the end result of Emilia trying to get past the trying over and over again results in her going insane a very chilling scene at the end of the episode as well as we see Subaru absolutely destroyed with bite taken out of him from the rabbits. In this episode we definitely get the most in-depth into roswall as a person and how he somehow knows Subaru is looping but he himself isn’t nor retains memories from Subarus loops but still doesn’t fear dying seeing it as a his present self dying and a bother him will be there when Subaru loops back and how it doesn’t matter if he dies as long as the him in the new loop reaches his goal is wild, also him saying to Subaru to protect the one thing that is truly the most precious to him and to get rid of everything but that and to think of nothing but that thing and by doing that he will become like him raises two thoughts for me 1 what is that thing to Subaru and 2 if doing that will make Subaru become like roswall than does that mean roswall has something like that as well and if so what and how does protecting that thing make him like roswall?

Mjw

So the reason Emilia lost herself in this episode was because she was re-trying the trial over and over again desperately trying to overcome her past in hopes of Subaru coming back which destroyed her mentally, its so sad to see, good thing our boy can reset ;) Great reaction, im excited to watch your reaction for the next episode. Also btw idk if this is the wrong place to ask or say this but ive been watching "Rising of the Shield Hero" these past weeks and its another Isekai like Rezero and its really good, and ironcally puts the mc thru hell like with Subaru lol. If you havent already seen it i would suggest putting it on ur list. I know uve got alot of shows planned so i jus wanna suggest it so u know uve got at least 1 person who wants u to see it ;) (Sorry if its not ok to ask that here, u can jus ignore this if thats the case)

This episode man. It’s filled with so much absolute despair. Emilia is emotionally broken, Beatrice is suicidal and ends up dying, Ram and Garfiel get murdered, and Roswaal begins to truly reveal himself. Roswaal knowing about return by death is one of my absolute favorite developments in the story. And rewatching S1, there’s actually a lot of clues that he knows. Lots of his more cryptic talk in S1 is completely recolored with this context. And on why he beats him up, it’s implied more heavily in the novels, but you can pick it up in the ep when he says “You still have no mind to start over?” that Roswaal knows Subaru can restart, but he doesn’t know what the activation is. So he doesn’t know Subaru has to die. For all he knows, he kills Subaru and then the looping ends forever. All the Beatrice stuff is just heartbreaking. It’s pretty relatable for me personally, I was in a really dark place years ago, and like she says, it really feels like you can’t even see your hands outstretched in front of you. And the Emilia stuff is just haunting. In Roswaal isolating her and the absolute emotional breakdown that follows, she almost becomes the vision of what Subaru wanted out of her early on in the series. A dependent doll who’ll say she loves him at the drop of a hat. Also a minor thing, but I do love that Garf tries to heal Ram. It’s sad, but also revealing. As this story has shown time and time again, people are multi-faceted. But yeah, love this episodes direction, the music is haunting, and the VAs go off as usual. Great thoughts as always, extremely excited for the next couple eps!
