2025-01-17 20:21:26 +0000 UTCThe only real piece of cut content in this episode is that it's mentioned by Ryuzu that the first copy of Ryuzu Meyer to be filled with Echidna's memories was defective and escaped one day. It went around doing shit, until it was killed by one of Roswaal's ancestors three generations ago. I'd also like to write up some excerpts from the novel to give some clarity to when Subaru was trapped in the Witch of Envy's shadows, and when he was facing down Garfiel at the end. "What was happening inside that shadow? -It was a blender. The shadow was dissolving Subaru's very being. It was melting him and mixing him into something else: everything that had been swallowed by shadow. -Mixed with all of the many, many things that had been swallowed whole by the Witch's shadow. Becoming one with those who had been melted before him had exposed Subaru to a great many emotions. Coursing into him were sensations, feelings, memories, knowledge that was not his own. It became natural to be instantly aware of those things as they let themselves in, carving into his body, his mind, and his soul... being engulfed by that shadow was not death. Natsuki Subaru would be stirred into something else, erased through becoming part of heterogenous whole." From his interaction with Garfiel, starting with him being choked (added speaker tags for convenience): With a low murmur, Garfiel suddenly let Subaru go. Unable to break his fall, Subaru tumbled to the ground, immediately glaring at Garfiel as he wondered what the big idea was-- and then he realised it. Resting in Garfiel's eyes was disgust-- and a faint trace of fear. Subaru: "Garfiel, you're..." Garfiel: "Shaddap, madman. This ain't funny. Damn it, you were testin' me, weren't ya?" Pressed into silence, Subaru touched a hand to his throat as he let out a light cough. Garfiel: "You knew ya might be killed then and there, damn it. This ain't no joke. How can ya smile when your own life is on the line? Ya lost your mind!" On one level, what he'd said was correct; on another, it was not. Fact was, Subaru's hands were shaking, and his stomach hadn't stopped crying out from convulsion-like pains. Mistaking his demeanour for composure was a considerable misreading. But it was a fact that he'd intentionally provoke Garfiel fully knowing that it put his life at risk. --After all, he had to be certain of what drove Garfiel to anger, what was making him explode. Subaru: "If my life's payment enough, I'll use it to get the results I want." If the only sacrifice that needed to be paid was in Subaru's heart, he might as well buy something worthwhile with it. If he could cheaply obtain a piece of a puzzle that eventually led to an optimal conclusion, he'd risk his life as many times as it took. No doubt his determination had been conveyed to Garfiel. Looking revolted from the bottom of his heart, his teeth groaned as he spat a reply. Garfiel: "I know a bastard who has the same eyes as you do. Me, I hate his guts. Hell, I should crush your head right now while I have the chance." I also find Subaru stating that he knows Hell, and that his purpose in being here is so that he is the only one that needs to know it. It sounds messianic, that if he takes on all of the suffering, then he will achieve his desired conclusion, and so what he may feel in the moment doesn't matter. As his mother said, "It doesn't matter what happens in the beginning, or the middle, what matters is that you can smile in the end." That said, what Subaru currently believes does not seem to align with what his mother wanted from him when she said those words. Great reaction as always, can't wait for the next batch.

2025-01-17 07:07:15 +0000 UTCA pretty bad Crunchyroll translation error that you reacted to -- where Ryuzu (Bilma) told Subaru that things would get dicey if Garfiel finds out that his relative (he considers Ryuzu Bilma to be his grandmother since he grew up in the Sanctuary) is secretly meeting up with the intruding stranger that is Subaru. I believe Crunchyroll messed up the translation here and slide in a "lover" out of nowhere because the author has the tendency of describing secret meetings in ReZero with the Japanese term of what would be "tryst" in English (secret meeting of lovers), so it's somewhat understandable here. Crunchyroll has waaaaay less defendable mistranslations later down the line for both Season 2 and 3, so stay tuned LOL I'll list some context down below for a lot of the scenes in this episode that was skimmed over since the adaptation tries to move things at a fast pace for better viewing experience: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- After she engulfed his entire being, what Subaru became was an amalgamation of his body, mind, and soul. He could no longer make the distinction between one or the other; everything was just becoming one jumbled entity, slowly dissolving into everything that had been swallowed by the shadow before him. It was here, in this brief instance of becoming what was essentially a collective consciousness, that Subaru became exposed to the emotions of many others. He was able to experience feelings and witness memories of the previous victims, all of which became deeply ingrained into his mind, body, and soul. Now, had Echidna not left Subaru with some insurance, then this would have been his permanent end. Luckily, that insurance created a light that restored Subaru's consciousness—a bright light in the pitch black that brought him back to his senses long enough for him to realize what he needed to do. Upon waking up, Subaru's memory of the witch's face brought forth a significant fear toward the girl lying in front of him. He was only able to muster the confidence to wake her up after assuming Satella's appearance to be nothing more than a trick—a form she chose to appear as in order to appeal to Subaru. This train of thought eventually brought him to a realization about the events prior to his awakening, though it wasn’t fully explained. It was more something that you had to piece together on your own. Subaru’s conclusion was that Satella had manifested in the Sanctuary and proceeded to take possession of Emilia’s body. To him, if an Archbishop of Sin could do it, then a witch definitely could as well. If that was, in fact, what happened, then it would also explain a lot of Garfiel’s actions. His restrained demeanor toward Subaru was because he had failed to protect Emilia. His absolute certainty about the witch having a physical body was because he knew Emilia had been possessed. His apology in advance was because he knew he’d have to strike down this Emilia-turned-witch right in front of Subaru’s eyes. All this pointed to the fact that Emilia had been taken from him. But this conclusion wasn’t just merely to make sense of what happened; it was also the justification Subaru needed so that he could work up the courage to confront Emilia. The thing is, Subaru's fear of Satella transcended beyond reality. Her authority over time made him wonder if she would eventually disregard his ability to Return by Death and simply take action herself. What scared Subaru the most was the possibility that Satella could go back in time herself and change whatever she wanted. He wasn’t sure if she was even capable, but the fact that it was plausible terrified him to the core. All this doubt and fear followed him as he finally used whatever little courage he had left to wake up Emilia. He knew he would have to comfort her from the nightmare she had just experienced, but the fear still had a very strong grip on his body. Only after hearing her voice call out his name did that grip start to loosen, leaving him completely speechless. Despite still trying to figure out the best way to console her, Emilia beat him to it by completely disregarding her own problems to focus on his. Her gentle touch and the warmth of her body led Subaru to break down into tears, much like how we saw in the anime. But he wasn’t crying out of grief or mental anguish. His tears stemmed from the relief that came with knowing that Emilia was still Emilia. An overwhelming sense of comfort filled his body as he could now confirm that the witch had not stolen Emilia away from him. The only way Subaru knew how to express this emotion was through the waterfall of tears flowing from his eyes. Anyway, we already know how Subaru found this loop to be going better than any of the ones before. So that means we can skip ahead to his conversation with Ram. Although it didn’t seem like it, there was actually quite a bit of depth to Ram’s statement regarding how Subaru looks at her. She understood that it wasn’t something of carnal desire but instead something vaguer. At first, Subaru didn’t quite understand what she meant, but eventually, he realized that she was implying that he never actually looks at her. Instead, he was always looking past her, as if every time he gazed in her direction, it wasn’t Ram he would see. No, what he would see was a completely different person. This was something Subaru had been trying to avoid, but he subconsciously couldn’t help himself from visualizing Rem in Ram. In any case, this whole conversation made Subaru feel a little bit unsettled. What made him feel even worse was the slight hint of gloom that could be seen on Ram’s face. Although her concern was very subtle, the gentle nature she shared with her sister was apparent now more than ever. This made Subaru want to tell Ram all about Rem, but his memory of Ram willingly wanting to sacrifice Rem made him hold his tongue. Instead, he went on to ask his favor. As their discussion continued, both seemed to notice something very telling about the other just from the look in their eyes. Ram’s eyes displayed a certain benevolence that seemed to contradict the way she spoke about Garfiel. Subaru didn’t want to assume anything, but there was no denying the gentle look in her eyes whenever she spoke of him. Subaru, on the other hand, had eyes that showed something much grimmer. Ram could tell that whatever Subaru saw in the tomb wasn’t good. Compared to the gaze he always had while looking past her, this was something far more unpleasant. It led to a standoff of interlocked stares that eventually resulted in Ram agreeing to help, bringing us now to Subaru’s encounter with Ryuzu Bilma. Her reveal of the clones finally made sense of how Subaru’s previous escape plan had been foiled. The Ryuzus spread throughout the Sanctuary had definitely reported his movements to Garfiel. Looking forward to next week! Stay safe out there!

2025-01-17 04:01:54 +0000 UTCLet’s go. I love the whole section with the Witch of Envy at the beginning. And it’s also a good time to bring up a cut from the novels. So this doesn’t happen every time Subaru dies and resets, but occasionally, in between death and the restart, Subaru will basically just become a disembodied consciousness floating in a void. And Satella is there with him. While he’s there, he feels the most genuine, passionate, and deep love with and toward her, and from her, like they’re intertwined with each other. These sections are called the “Shadow Garden.” He doesn’t remember these happening, almost like when you can’t remember a dream anymore. He also slowly begins to gain body parts each time he returns there, eyes, mouth, etc. And when he gets wrapped up in the shadow in this ep, it’s almost like a negative inversion of those scenes, as he’s struggling and ends up killing himself instead of accepting the love. I love when he breaks down in front of Emilia. It’s one of those moments where he drops the bravado and actually lets himself be vulnerable, much like the lap pillow of S1. Emilia always responds well to these, she has a sort of motherly instinct at times, it’s portrayed much more often in the novels, but she shows it in scenes like this. Tons of info on Ryuzu and the sanctuary, won’t say much as the show will continue to unfold that. Awesome thoughts as always, super excited for the next ones!

2025-01-17 03:00:41 +0000 UTCI'm sure someone will mention this in more detail, but at 3:30, the Witch of Envy DOESN'T say "Love me." She just says "ai shite", which means, "love" as a command. So, "I love you love you love you love you" ... -> "you, too, must love"

2025-01-17 02:42:58 +0000 UTCAgree nothing Garfiel could have gone through will ever beat Subaru's experience but even still just because Subaru when through more would never make Garfiel's experience any less valid the thought of trying to compare at all would just result in the undermining of someone's experience making them feel that what they when through was invalid Lmao

2025-01-17 02:40:14 +0000 UTCLol that's true. Hard to imagine anything can compare to Subaru. Though comparing is a mistake to begin with probably

2025-01-17 02:36:35 +0000 UTCI find it ironic that Garfiel says Subaru doesn't know what pain and suffering is not while knowing what Subaru has been through just for Goodwin to immediately do the same to Garfiel telling him he doesn't know what pain and suffering is while also not know what garfiel could have possibly gone through in his past Lmao great reaction looking forward to next week!
