Ass Class poll + New Show + Schedule
Added 2025-01-15 17:17:25 +0000 UTCGonna try to cram a bunch of things in this post at once...
TLDR:
Vote for Assassination Classroom sub or dub below
It's a wildcard pick but decided to watch Severance, starting this week
New schedule: Ass Class x 2, Re: Zero x 2, Severance x 1 (or 2 time permitting)
Sub vs. Dub
I've already watched through episode 3 so if dub wins it wouldn't start until episode 4.
I know this is a controversial topic but I ask that conversations be kept civil. I also understand that one or the other is often a deal breaker, but as it's a binary choice there's no possible way do both. I appreciate your understanding on the matter.
Severance
This is somewhat of an odd pick. It's the first time I'm watching a live-action fictional show. It also has odd pacing, at least from what I've seen already. It's also possible it's one giant "mystery box" (a ton of questions with no planned answers), so it feels like somewhat of a risk. But from what I've heard and seen, it's engaging, thought-provoking, and something I really wanted to watch ahead of the upcoming season 2, so I decided to just start it and see how it goes.
I had mentioned a slice of life show and that's still something I want to do, so next time!
That's all!
Re: Zero later today and tomorrow, and then Severance after that.
Thanks everyone, hope you are all enjoying the new year so far :D

2025-01-16 18:06:34 +0000 UTCIMO the dub is definitely a good one but the original cast (especially Koro-sensei's VA) still does the better job.

2025-01-16 12:25:09 +0000 UTCThere is a lot of discussion between dub vs sub here. Let’s remember that regardless of what is chosen, Goodwin will enjoy the series as it’s AMAZING. Personally, I voted for Dub; it is one of the best out there. I will say this though: it seems like some people are voting sub based on principle. Totally respect and understand that as everyone has their preference. However, picking out of spite or memeing is a bit disappointing to be honest. Whatever happened in the past, let’s give Goodwin our honest vote of what we would prefer and not some anti-dub campaign. Sorry for the long essay. Have a great day, y’all!

2025-01-16 06:17:06 +0000 UTCIt's been so long since I've watched the show I don't remember if the sub or dub is better 😭😭

2025-01-16 03:26:56 +0000 UTCMan it’s wild how the dub vs sub thing becomes a huge issue for every reactor for every show. I don’t envy you during these times lol. Anyway I’m here for your commentary and couldn’t care less about the language of the shows 🤷♂️. Keep at it Goodwin 🫡

2025-01-16 02:32:30 +0000 UTCIMO sub is better... but the dub for this anime is not bad. Sub is just better slightly for this anime.

2025-01-15 23:34:58 +0000 UTCViolet Evergarden has one episode in its entire cour that could be classified as an action episode. Almost every episode bar a very short section in the pilot and one episode has zero action scenes. I’m sure the same can’t be said of Ass Class, hence why Violet Evergarden is not under the Action genre and Ass Class is.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 23:27:07 +0000 UTCThat's not an accurate representation, I'd say it's action is about as frequent as Violet Evergarden's.

2025-01-15 23:21:04 +0000 UTCI watch most shows in Sub, but this is one I actually switched to the Dub after 1 episode, it's a quality Dub and feels more natural than the Sub for this show, IMO. That being said it's not really a dealbreaker for me either way, I love this show and will watch regardless.
Alex DeYoung
2025-01-15 22:34:40 +0000 UTCAgreed I feel with a laid back show like this it’s a lot more entertaining to just sit back and not have to read
Mjw
2025-01-15 22:25:41 +0000 UTCyeah, it's unfortunate cause comedies tend to be more enoyable in dubs when jokes and line delivery can be played around with to suit whatever audience. especially in this show where a running gag is in english anyways!
Ayan
2025-01-15 22:21:43 +0000 UTCYeah it’s either people who haven’t seen the show and don’t care or people who automatically assume the sub is better just because it’s in sub when the dub is 1000x better
Mjw
2025-01-15 22:09:59 +0000 UTC@Vincent Quickly searched it and it’s a Shounen labeled under the “Action” and “Comedy” genres on MAL.

2025-01-15 21:53:45 +0000 UTCthe only comments supporting the ass class sub so far seem to be people who don't even care about ass class, so i hope more people who have actually seen the show come through for the dub 😭

2025-01-15 21:44:04 +0000 UTCI am a proud sub elitist
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 21:40:04 +0000 UTCfor this anime specifically I think most if not all the dub voice actors do a better job, than the sub voice actors, Also, I really don't want to sound mean but some of your points make me feel like I'm talking to a sub elitist, I'm sorry if that was too harsh if so, I do apologize
Mjw
2025-01-15 21:39:07 +0000 UTCI think dubs can sometimes have good performances, but the subs are almost always better. The subs fit the writing, mood, and themes of the stories and worlds because they are the original versions of the show. If you want to know what the original artists had in mind for those characters and the story, you have to watch the original version of the show.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 21:35:18 +0000 UTCif you think the voice acting is great in Fullmetal Alchemist them you should know that koro-sensei is voice by sonny strait who voiced Maes Hughes who I think in this anime is one of the highlights of the dub, also I personally don't think it is disrespectful to view the show in a way the original artist did not intend and was not involved in creatively, but I think if you do than that's fine.
Mjw
2025-01-15 21:33:28 +0000 UTCSimply put, in Japan, voice acting is a big deal, and actors go to special schools to learn how to make their voices do all sorts of crazy things. In the US, voice acting is just a side job for Hollywood actors. There are a few exceptions, like Cowboy Bebop, where an awesome American artist outside the animation industry comes in and does the voice acting. Another exception is Fullmetal Alchemist, which had such a great cast of English voice actors that basically every major English anime dub since then has reused them. That's also why Ghibli films sometimes have dubs that are just as good as the subs. Harvey Weinstein personally got A-list Hollywood actors and actresses to do the voice acting for Ghibli films. Also when consuming art from another culture I think it is disrespectful to view it in a way the original artist did not intend and was not involved in creatively. I don't think the Mob Psycho or Fruits Basket dubs are "bad", but they are definitely inferior in many ways to the original Japanese versions.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 21:24:27 +0000 UTCWhy do you think those dubs are bad if you don't mind my asking?
Mjw
2025-01-15 21:15:53 +0000 UTCWrong, almost all dubs are inferior
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 21:14:42 +0000 UTCall of those had great dubs and Assclass is one of my favorite dubs in anime I would put it in my top 10 dubbed anime, Please.
Mjw
2025-01-15 21:14:08 +0000 UTCThis is retribution for all the Goodwin reaction series that have either been ruined (Dandadan, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) or almost ruined (Fruits Basket, Mob Psycho) because he watched them in dub.

2025-01-15 21:08:10 +0000 UTCI am looking forward to another series in the underappreciated non-action anime genre, like Kaguya-sama: Love is War, March Comes in like a Lion, Violet Evergarden, and Fruits Basket. I hope one day you will again pick another series like these again.
Jasmine Tea Enjoyer
2025-01-15 21:05:34 +0000 UTCYeah i guess i agree on that but still for this anime specifically I would recommend watching the dub 10 times out of 10 because of how good I think it is for me I can’t stand the sub for this anime
Mjw
2025-01-15 21:01:37 +0000 UTCIt's like 250 chapters plus it would take him a very long time to read and react to all of it. Also he has seen around half the manga adapated into animation already.

2025-01-15 20:55:04 +0000 UTCEven if people only ever explained when a line is mistranslated / awkwardly localized (which they don't): 1. It would still be better to minimize the number of times that needs to happen. 2. There is other information that can be lost through dubbing that nobody will bother to comment on, like tone/inflection.

2025-01-15 19:36:08 +0000 UTCI’m fine with letting the art change his interpretation but I was more talking about something like an awkward transition rather than something like him misinterpreting a characters motivations like when that happens I’m fine with him not understanding it and learning for himself what type of person that character is but if it’s something like a weird translation then I think it’s fine for someone to tell him what the original meant

2025-01-15 19:15:47 +0000 UTCOff Topic: I just watched season 1 of The Apothecary Diaries and season 2 is now airing weekly for the winter anime season. I fell in love with this show. It is a Drama/Mystery/Romance show that reminds me of Scherlock. Could be a good candidate for a more story focused slice of life-ish show in the future.
bl0odm1st
2025-01-15 19:03:02 +0000 UTCYeah, he's already been spoiled several times by the comments on re:zero explaining something they think he missed that the characters will literally say in the next episode... Anyway, if he missed something and then someone explains it to him in the comments, he is not having the experience of misinterpreting the art and being wrong until the art shows him something that changes his interpretation.
Gus N
2025-01-15 18:55:59 +0000 UTCNine times out of ten I'd vote sub, for AC though I'll absolutely make an exception. Honestly I'd say the English cast do a better job that the Japanese cast in terms of the acting itself, with one of the English VAs especially really doing a much better job than the Japanese VA for one scene, though there are, literally and not figuratively, two or three lines that are translated noticeably awkwardly so there are some downsides as well. In the end both are good though.

2025-01-15 18:48:34 +0000 UTCIf you do ever decide to do a discord Goodwin I have some experience in large fandom communities and moderating. I wouldn't have time to mod but I've seen a lot of discord servers have drama spills that I have advice on how to avoid from a foundation standpoint. DM me if you want more detail.

2025-01-15 18:40:17 +0000 UTCHim watching it in dub doesn't mean he wouldn't be experiencing art he would still be watching the show and people will always be in the comments explaining stuff to him no matter what language he watches in like re: zero he is watching in sub and people are still in the comments going in depth.
Mjw
2025-01-15 18:39:47 +0000 UTCAlso in case you are worried about the mystery box setup, the writers have said that they have answers planned for most of the big questions, but also left a few details unknown to let the plot progression feel more natural. I hear a lot of debate with storytelling as for if a fully planned out story (something like Dark) is better than a story that kinda just gets crafted as it goes with generally only loose ideas for plans that can always change (HxH is a strong example of this style working). Obviously both have their advantages but when it comes to mystery box setups it's always reassuring to hear that answers have been planned since the show was first being made, and hearing the raving reviews about season 2 makes me believe we are in good hands! I think you will really really like this show

2025-01-15 18:20:08 +0000 UTCMy vote is for Dub. Honestly I mostly listen and your commentary is usually interesting and thought provoking so when it's Sub it's not really something I can partake in while driving. On the note of you being open to watching live action, I think your commentary/reactions of Atlanta would be so good. Realistically its kind of a niche show, so maybe just check it out in your own time if you haven't. Severance season 1 is really good. It's got a lot of Zoolander vibes.

2025-01-15 17:50:59 +0000 UTCThat's great advice, thanks. I've been thinking more seriously about a discord lately. I'm kind of pulling a dictator slot here with Severance, it's what I wanted to watch on my own time so I figured I'd include it. That's also great to hear that I've barely scratched the surface. My perspective is skewed because before I've seen them, I don't know they exist. It's like finishing a great show and video game and thinking, ah, will I ever find something this good again? Of course you will, but it doesn't feel that way.

2025-01-15 17:42:46 +0000 UTCThis might be the wrong place for this but I'm going to repost my comment from the holiday update post here verbatim incase you didn't see it (I was late commenting): "I'm not sure about live action but: Regarding works with huge cultural significance, there are plenty of anime that fit that description that you haven't seen yet. As far as anime goes, it seems like you've barely scratched the surface of what's out there. Pop-shonen and hyped up seasonals tend to dominate in polls and in the youtube algorithm so it's understandable, but it would be nice to see more of the "classics", or at least more stuff that is thematically rich and groundbreaking, or maybe some more controversial stuff? Your insights on every single show I've watched with you are so thoughtful that there are some shows that I literally can't wait to hear what you have to say about them. And you watching an overhyped seasonal because that's what wins the poll seems like a waste in comparison. I don't want to throw out any recommendations for shows I'm thinking of here since you only asked about live action and slice of life recs, but I do want to recommend two things you could do that will hopefully end up causing more of the kind of shows I'm thinking of to end up in the queue: 1. Make a dictator slot for yourself, where you choose a show you want to watch. If you don't think it will do well in the youtube algorithm you can make that show patreon exclusive too. 2. Make a discord server. Recommendations through youtube and patreon comments don't really get discussed, discussion is very siloed, and shows that don't get a ton of recs tend to get pushed to the bottom. In a discord server, discussion on why you should or shouldn't watch the most commonly recommended show will naturally happen and you can better judge it off of that."
Gus N
2025-01-15 17:41:44 +0000 UTCI will watch it even if you react to grass growing at this point, your commentary is what I am here for the most. Every show that bring you something to talk about is great by me. If I would to recommend I would to recommend a show it would be ping pong animation.
Marko
2025-01-15 17:41:07 +0000 UTCI appreciate the spirt of your answer but it's a distinction without a difference. He said it was binary and he will only react to one. It's also just a joke.
Douglas Davis
2025-01-15 17:39:46 +0000 UTCIt's not a binary choice: you can pick both or neither!
Gus N
2025-01-15 17:36:13 +0000 UTCI will always be against dub of any kind for a first watch (unless it's just like a meme show or something). It's just one extra barrier where the details and intent of the original production and actors can be lost in translation/localization.

2025-01-15 17:28:57 +0000 UTCI feel a poll is always pointless because there’s always those who pick and don’t comment at all and it’s always favored towards sub no matter what arguments are made. I feared it would go this way…

2025-01-15 17:28:28 +0000 UTCFirst off, Alex giving a binary choice makes me think he has been supplanted. Next he'll be giving pro school takes. I'm going to throw Ranking of Kings in the mix again. It's not really slice of life but it's not like a Shonen action either. Maybe after re:zero. Plant the seed now.
