Echidna is the best

I saw this get posted as soon as I left on a trip, so I've been waiting until I got home to watch this. A small, fun detail is that the name Hoshin in Garfiel's idiom "Hoshin was Banan's sunset" is the same as Anastasia's last name. Small bit of cut content from Arc 3, Hoshin of the Wastes was a legendary merchant from Kararagi (the nation to the west of Lugunica 400 years ago). Anastasia took his name as her surname, and made it into the name of her mercantile company. She's basically saying that she's going to be the greatest merchant in history. There isn't much cut content from the light novel this episode, it was very well adapted from what I can tell. I also feel like the content presented within speaks for itself quite well. A lot of the small details and interesting tidbits can only be talked about with knowledge from later events, but that's part of the charm of Re:Zero. Everytime you watch it, you'll pick up on another little character detail that shows the intricacy of the story. Hope you enjoyed this episode, can't wait for the next one.

Of course a character named Garfield turned into a ginger cat.

Hey I just want to make sure that you're aware that there's an important after credit scene in S02E09. Some reactors in the past have just completely missed it, and I would hate for that to happen to you.

Subaru: literally gets eaten alive... "This is good, yeah this is good" ... only re:zero would make you say something like that about the maim character getting eaten alive

The value of life is such a great title and that scene with echidna is really good especially in a rewatch. To finally be able to talk about the agony he has been living through over and over again when he always couldn't is a very important development and I'm thinking more specifically about that one time where he broke mentally after dying and got some emotionnal support from Emilia. To be able to finaly acknowledge his reality with his own voice instead of having to be suffocated by it unable to utter a word and share it with someone else is really something else. This single step is very precious because finally it opens for Suabru the possibility of thinking about the value of his own life, something he was never able to consider, since from the start of the show everything he has gone through tried to hammer into him this idea that his life doesn't have value or at least not as much as others. You can say that return from death as a concept was used to change his own subconsious assessment of the value of his own life something difficult to think about alone expecailly giving how busy he was with everything, but now he finally broke free from those shackles of loneliness and can talk and think more freely with someone. ( quite ironic since you said you yourself brought up that echidna seems to know a fair bit about loneliness as well , maybe that's a reason why she seemed a bit empathic ?)

This ep is just so great. Tons of confusion, horror, and emotional resolution. A real quintessential Re: Zero episode. Plus more Ram greatness. I love Echidna. She’s so fascinating. Her personality, desires, goals, and all the things that make her, her are some of my favorite parts of this season. And that final scene with Subaru is so emotional for me personally. While Return by Death is a mechanic within the shows world, thematically it’s a representation of Subarus inability to express himself, his depression and anxiety, his loneliness, and his fears of rejection. All of which he has in spades. And so finally feeling able to talk about these things is super cathartic. I’ve always felt like Echidna almost feels like a therapist. A room you go to that no one else is privy to, where you can unpack your deepest insecurities and traumas, at least in theory. The rabbit scene is just horrific. Reading it in the novels for the first time made my stomach turn, the description was so vile. I think it’s easily Subarus worst death so far from a purely physical standpoint. I loved hearing your thoughts on Subarus drive and will, and comparing that to characters like Deku or Hinata, who are very different characters in terms of backgrounds and motives, yet have a similar sort of boldness. I think you’ll be very interested to see this stories interpretation and opinion on that sort of drive and heroic ideal, both the good and the bad. Super excited for the next ones, great thoughts as always.

I don't watch a lot of reactions, so I'm basically going on an n of 1 here, but I think Alex might be the only person to see the rabbit death for the first time and say "This is good. This is good." 😄 🤣 That was the scene that came to my mind first when Alex said a few episodes ago that Subaru had experienced death in every conceivable way. Personally, on my first watch-through, I didn't put "have your body ripped apart in small chunks of flesh at a time by a pack of murderous rabbits" on my bingo card. Anyway, Alex also looked a bit surprised by the episode title, but I think it's worth remembering how many times this season Subaru has either unalived himself, wished for death, told other people to discard his life or kill him, and so on. This episode, Subaru's line "the only one who has to die is me" hits hard for me. Last thought: it might be a good time to remember that Subaru is the Japanese name for the constellation that we call the Pleiades, or what's sometimes also called "the Seven Sisters."

Echidna might be my favorite character
