Re: Zero 2x3 Reaction Extended (YT link below)

In Re: Zero 2x3, The Long-Awaited Reunion, I'm not gonna judge a girl just because she has silver hair. I'll leave that to the villagers. At the same time I'm not drinking her pee. I'll leave that to Subaru.

Don't have much to say that others haven't already said for this episode. There is a small mistl, the subtitles have Echidna say something to the effect of the "the Sloth Witch Factor acted on the tea, encouraging stability." The actual JP indicates that the tea is working on the Sloth Witch Factor instead. Of course, this is nowhere near as bad as the old translation, where somehow the translator translated "Sloth Witch Factor" as "Envy Witch Factor." From memory there aren't too many more mistranslations in season 2. Season 3 has had some issues, some way overblown, and some pretty bad, but hey, that's just the Crunchyroll guarantee of (shit) quality. Another setup episode, but I just love every scene Roswaal is in. He's such a fascinating guy even when we know so little about him.

Now I feel like I need to read the novels

Lmao yeah sometimes he says the name right then corrects himself and you have to kinda just ignore it, and I will give him that Patrasche’s name is hard but Echidna on the other hand I feel is a lot harder of a name to mess up I only hope he gets Echidna’s name right for my sanity because I can’t take hearing him Say “Chid” anymore lmao

Mjw

I'm just (lightheartedly) making fun of Alex's eternal struggle with character names. Echidna and Patrasche are the toughest so far in Re:Zero, but my personal all-time favorite from Alex is the many different pronunciations of Gigantomachia. I probably shouldn't be snarky, though. It's a lot to take in, and names are hard.

Ryan

I can’t tell if you’re joking or being serious right now Lmao

Three random language notes. I think I've mentioned a few times how every major character in Re:Zero has a wildly exaggerated individual speech style. Roswaal making random syllables looOOOonger and loopy, Ram referring to everyone including herself by name, Emilia's "sugoooku" and archaisms, Betty's "-kashira," Crusch talking like a samurai from the late 1500s, etc. A few examples from this episode: - Throughout the series, Subaru keeps using expressions that sound like he's trying to coin a new catchphrase (basically, he's "trying to make 'fetch' happen," if that reference still makes sense). At 8:21, "I'm broke beyond compare" is 'banpufutou no ichimon-nashi' (万夫不当の一文無し), which is pretty funny. Normally, 'banpufutou' refers to a hero who is without rival--word for word: if you search 10,000 men you won't find even one that's as valuable, so "beyond compare" in a strictly positive way--but Subaru uses that to describe how broke he is. It sounds like he's trying really hard to say something people will want to quote. I guess I did, so.... joke's on me? - Echidna, the Witch of Greed, uses 'boku' as a first-person pronoun. Women who use that are called 'boku-kko' (僕っ子) in Japanese and it's considered a sign of tomboyishness most of the time. In Re:Zero, though, it's tough to say. Everyone worth knowing has a special way of speaking, so her having a special speech tick could just be a sign that Echidna is a key character, not a sign of youthful impudence specifically. - Garfiel's speech is wild in many ways. First there's the whole using-idioms-from-a-fantasy-world-we-don't-know thing that Vali Sippola mentioned. Beyond that, though, and continuing with what Vali was saying, in general it's pretty similar to Bakugo from MHA, who has the same voice actor, Okamoto Nobuhiko. Even Bakugo doesn't usually refer to himself as "ore-sama" (a fiction-only way to indicate extreme arrogance or pride, usually used by big boss villains), but Bakugo and Garfiel do share the habit of referring to other people as 'temee' (roughly: 'you f&*@$r') and talking about what other people do by adding +(y)agaru (like 11:43 'de-yagatta' instead of 'deta', which doesn't change the meaning, but just adds the nuance of putting the other person down, kind of like a linguistic punch to the face). His pronunciation also makes everything sound like a swear word. It's hard for me to describe without using jargon, but just taking one example, 11:30 ('sutettte-yarrrru'): things like rolling his 'r' and pronouncing that last 'u' as something halfway between u-e is really typical "picking-a-fight" style speech.

E-chid-na and Pass-trash, ;)

Loved the part where you said you couldn't believe Ram actually made a concession and apologized. It's actually funny because Subaru felt the same way in the novels too LOL -- ["Lady Emilia seems to have changed a little. Is it thanks to something you instilled in her?" "It's probably the result of her own thoughts. Even if I did say something, she's not the type to entrust decisions she's resolved to make to someone else." "…You're right. That was Ram's mistake just now." Subaru's response made Ram, who had spoken somewhat coldly earlier, apologize. It was rare for her to apologize, so Subaru was taken aback. Ram, on the other hand, narrowed her light red eyes. "What? If I feel I've done something wrong, Ram will apologize too. It's just that such things almost never happen." "That kind of confidence… I sometimes genuinely envy it." "You can't call it confidence. Ram is often right; it's a truth of nature." Ram crossed her arms, her self-assurance reaching a point well beyond mere overconfidence. Subaru could only sigh.] It always baffles me on a rewatch -- just how many questions and mysteries the show throws at you at the start of the season (and even more to come). But I think you'll be pleased to know that EVERY loose end eventually gets tied up, nothing feels cheap and it all just ends up being so rewarding! I was also genuinely taken aback by your observation of Subaru's Dad being shredded and linking it to him being a very disciplined individual, which made a lot of sense the moment you led me to realize it too. I didn't think I'd notice a new detail this early into the season, after already watching the show like 3 times. It's always neat to see how characterization that can be built upon so easily with the most minute details. Really excited for the next episode of the week and the ways it can (will) deliver!

Hailan

That’s what Subaru assumes as well. He then takes that as a sign that she wouldn’t be of much help in helping Rem.

Vali Sippola

Her not knowing the arch bishops feels like a big revelation. Though I guess if she's dead and they came later...

Alex G

What's odd about it is their personalities are so intertwined. I guess it could be that when someone disappears nothing actually changes about the internal compositions of the people that knew them... they just don't know why they became what they are. And also Ram isn't the most forthcoming about her inner emotions usually, at least not directly

Alex G

Great thoughts as usual. Especially liked your thoughts on seeing Envy in the day to day, and it made me think about the possible reasons Satella seemingly consumed the other witches. And Echidna has arrived. She’s a favorite character of mine, and I love all the lore drops she gave surrounding the witches. Even those little tidbits give a better picture at what we’re dealing with. He asks a number of other questions in the novels, including about the archbishops, to which she replies “I haven’t heard the term.” There’s a few more questions surrounding the world that he asks, but it ends up going about the same, and he leaves. Maybe a good thing considering that she likes to take payment for her services. We get introduced to Garfiel, who has the same Japanese VA as Bakugo (MHA) and Nishinoya (Haikyuu). He’s an awesome character, and I love all his little sayings that Subaru doesn’t understand. Tons of character interactions and setup with Otto, Ram, and especially Roswaal. I love how Emilia is coming into her own more already. Obviously she’s somewhat doing it out of necessity for the situation, so there’s still more to learn, but she’s definitely taking a more active role. And finally, the long-awaited reunion. I’m so, so excited for the next episode!

Vali Sippola

Agreed episode 18 is definitely my favorite of season 1 but for season 2 it’s next episode without a doubt

Mjw

Agreed, i think my favorite is ep 18 due to the rem speech but man this next ep is a close second for me. I also have so much to say about it but gonna wait for next reaction.

Snor

Garfiel is much ruder than i remember lol especially towards my boi Otto >:/ (Yes im becoming the number 1 Otto defender lmao) Great reaction, im excited to see what you've got to say for the next episode as its one of my favorites. Also about Ram being unaffected without Rem is actually kinda realistic i mean if someone were to tell me i forgot my long lost best friend id be like "wat?, idk anyone that fits that description" from Ram's pov she has gotten over her past without Rem being in it.

Snor

Next episode is one of if not my favorite episode this season it just really struck a chord with me when I was watching it because it shocked me with how much I related too Subaru in the episode, but I'll talk more about that when the reaction for the episode comes out I can't wait, also echidna's name is pronounced like E-KID-Na
