It could be a few months or hundreds of years lol. About the notebook switching: it’s actually super important, and not because of the eye deal - Misa lost that when she gave up ownership. There was no way to avoid that. Light switches which shinigami is attached to which notebook. Why this matters: the death note he originally got from Ryuk had instructions written in English on how to use it that Ryuk wrote to make his game in the human world more fun. This is the death note Light needs to go out into the world again, it already has a user’s manual attached detailing EXACTLY how to use it. However, when he sends this book out, he needs Rem to be attached to it, not Ryuk, since Rem will actually go along with the plan and Ryuk is a useless piece of shit lol. Imagine if L got to question Ryuk, he would spill everything. Light then has Ryuk take ownership of the other notebook so he can still participate as an observer in the game since they’re low key buddies. Finally, regarding the rest of this show, the authors make some bold choices that can be shocking, but I think the ending is properly satisfying if you can stick it out.
