Oh We're Never Getting Rep TV Now
Added 2025-06-18 17:00:16 +0000 UTC
Hey everyone! I'm nearly done editing the next DDD, but before that, I wanted to get a quick vlog out about Taylor Swift getting her masters back, and the biggest impact it'll have - me having to revise my video schedule. Enjoy!
(Also minor correction - I mentioned Future doing the collab with Cher, and the way I said it made it sound like they did it recently. Turns out it's years old. But I thought the joke was funny so I kept it in.)
Oh, I'm actually relieved that Rep TV isn't coming lol
I spend more time on the swiftie side of Twitter, and it's been a while since the incessant theories and stupid math got annoying for me, I would just scroll past them and hope the release date was announced already... not to mention that once it came out, the discourse would be basically about how they're different and worse than the original, like it's been with all the TVs, especially 1989 (with good reason)
I disagree about everyone thinking the TVs were all worse though... from what I see in online discussions, from fans at least, some TVs are considered to be better, especially because of the vocal performance (one that comes to mind is The Way I Loved You, from Fearless). Some are considered to be as good as the original, and some are widely considered to be worst. The most hated TV might be Style, I think. But I've seen fans making playlists of their ideal versions of each album, mixing OGs and TVs. And something that is mentioned a lot in conversations about Debut TV is the vocal improvement, so I don't think the opinion and expectations for the TVs Project are all bad, at least from a fan's perspective.
I'd have to take a poll to know for sure the opinion about specific songs or albums, but - if you decide to make the big TV retrospective - I think it's something you could ask your audience before your final thoughts come out, like in the community tab or something, what's their overall opinion: which ones they prefer, which they think is worst, I don't know. But I do think it would be an interesting video, if you're into doing it. I can hear when something's off or different in a TV, but I can't quite pinpoint why.
Anyway... good one! I love learning more about music history, lore and all that stuff and your channel is one of my favorite places on YouTube. Cheers from Brazil!

Wine>Grapes, but you're pretty echo-y. Wonder if you could reduce it a bit with software? Otherwise I guess you gotta put blankets everywhere on your walls (?) (or proper equipment, but given this is not your usual recording place...)

As a swiftie who didn't really care what Taylor's versions were next etc I found it funny when she said rep tv is not even finished 😂
I hope we still get the vault tracks I always love to see what else was written during that time. I hope we get debut tv just so can see the difference in vocals etc from then to now.
I've seen people be like of course she doesn't want to re record that she would be singing about falling in love with her but you could say that about multiple of her albums especially with red. But yeah I didn't think of if rep TV happened Kanye probably would go off & do some stupid tweeting spree.
I've been trying to get back into the original recordings bc I stopped listening to them unless there wasn't a Taylor's version yet so it's been a bit weird trying to listen to the old tracks again but you can defs tell the difference between the songs.
Btw if you do that long video of all the songs/albums being compared to Taylor's versions I'd be so down to watch.

Honestly, as someone who's way too morbidly curious for this cursed world, I do kind of hold out hope that Reputation TV will eventually be made and you get to do your fun remake. Though my reasoning might be more reductive.
For one, I'm kinda confident that while Taylor has been struggling to get into the mindset of where she was in 2016/17, she could figure something out, she could have that mentality click, even though it would not be the most positive mindset. I find that there is a sort of fun to being pseudo-dark & edgy, having a revenge fantasy without having a specific someone to want to get revenge on, and I think that mindset would definitely be best, because it could make recording the music more fun for her. That's just me, tho.
But for two, that album had a good amount of reckoning with her celebrity status, and considering how she's literally the biggest thing ever right now, and her tour & poetry department have both sold more than previously thought possible, it could be good to lean into that mindset and give those non-snake tracks a fresher mindset. Though speaking as I've never heard the album yet (even though I am curious), I don't know how fruitful that would be.
For three, I don't think an updated version of the album would sound all that dated. For sure, it would give almost everyone a flashback to dark times if they want to reduce the album to that, but I don't know, I feel like the sound of its time can be sharpened up to modern times without sacrificing the original album's sound. However, I am speaking as someone who still listens to brostep and adjacent EDM subgenres regularly, who am I to speak on "dated music"
For four por favour, I don't think Kanye will do anything about it. For real. I think the nitrous will be taking enough of its toll on him, because at this point, he does not seem to want to commit to anything anymore. He's stopped committing to finishing the music he releases for years now, and it's to the point where he's stopped committing to releasing albums entirely. Bully is not going to get released any time soon, why would The Life of Pablo (Kanye's Version)?
For five, I don't think the vault tracks will be enough. Could you imagine listening to the original Reputation and then wanting to listen to the vault tracks right after, recorded over half a decade later? The contrast would be jarring! Plus, these were songs that weren't going to be on the original album, and the original album has been largely seen as one of her worst, if not her worst in general. If these vault tracks are going to be released on their own as B-sides, lower songs from a critically maligned era, I guarantee you, the response will not be that much better than if she were to just re-record the whole thing, too.
And finally, for six, it would be at least a little more satisfying to complete the whole gamut of this saga. I mean, fine if she only re-recorded her first five albums instead of six, at least there's not a gap left wide open, but completing this would mean finally leaving behind the whole of the original six saga. It would be a nice celebratory thing, too. A celebration that a lot of people will groan at, but a celebration all the same.
Those are my theories, at least.

Tbh I was always a little cynical about the TV project if just I had read the original Tumblr post about the article... And most of her anger was about scooters connection to ye, which yeah now we understand ye really was in the wrong and an awful person but then I was like "the famous drama was years ago, let it go and continue to make your millions" plus I hadn't really cared about Taylor honestly for the same reason alfomedia didn't care.. "this is for *girls*" and I'm totally cis and straight and totally not having emotional issues about it... So respecting on that has been kinda interesting, I'm still not a fan and the fact my job plays shake it off every day annoying, but I have stuff I really like

Oof good question - Spoon for sure is one. In this moment, I'd add Prince, Kendrick, and Carly Rae Jepsen. But that list could easily change depending on the mood. (Except for Spoon, they're locked in.) What about you?

1989 was the most "off" to me personally - I know Chris Rowe was Taylor's go-to guy for the TVs (aside from Jack and Aaron of course), and his background is in country. If they had done/were going to do Rep TV, I think that feeling of something being off would've only been amplified. I imagine nostalgia is a part of it too! I personally tie a lot of emotional value to certain moments in her songs - the one that comes to mind right now is the vocal harmonies on the OG "All Too Well." Always loved those.
The 20th anniversary tie-in makes a ton of sense. Also I'd LOVE a Taylor record where she hard-pivots to folk-country with Aaron. Folklore and Evermore were kinda that, but they can go even further.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!

This is a super valid perspective! I do wonder how history will look back on the TV albums, and specifically the discourse around them when we thought this was her vs. the industry. I think it speaks volumes that people were so willing to flip around and say the TVs were never that good. It all kinda reminds me of LCD Soundsystem's "goodbye" live album, when they were only away five years before reuniting. I suppose we'll have to wait and see. Thank you for sharing all this! Also, fav Taylor song at this moment is Sweet Nothing.

Such great thoughts! As an OG Swiftie, I've noticed a LOT of tiny differences even without a music degree so I'd be very interested to see how your analysis compares. The puzzle analogy is spot on as well! I still prefer listening to the originals since they're what I grew up with and I know most other Swifties feel the same. And yeah, Tree Paine (her PR manager) is my hero, I strive to be as accomplished as her.
Though I have to say, after all the overexposure I am very over her too. To the point where I may not even listen to a future album unless Aaron's worked on it. Regardless, I'm definitely glad to not have to see "[Blank] TV coming!!!1!!11!1" on every damn app lol. Very ready for a new era! Thanks as always for sharing this with us ☺️

Great video, I always appreciate your Taylor Swift insights, Mr. Snare.
However, I'm going to be the "hater" here for a second, because this news broke my brain and I need to get this off my chest.
I can empathize with Taylor to an extent about ownership and I do agree that she (along with every other artist) deserves to own her masters, but she loses me with the marketing of this project that just reeks of cynicism towards her fans and fans of music at large. If she wanted to quietly release re-recorded versions of her past records to own the masters, I would have been mostly okay with that. If she decided to do something like Paramore did with Re: This Is Why (Re: Reputation?) where she brought on smaller artists to reinterpret the original songs on Reputation, I would've been over the MOON (just imagine how wild it would've been to see something like "Look What You Made Me Do (Charli's Version)" or something idk), but that isn't what happened.
Instead the release cycles for the TV albums were EXHAUSTING. Each time she announced one, it swallowed the discourse void whole for at least a week, shunting everything else off of the charts on release, and for what? An album that was recorded specifically to sound legally identical to the original? To me, the whole project felt like a middle finger to creativity itself, but I stayed quiet about it because according to the discourse void, this was the ONLY WAY for her to own her masters.
With this recent news, it feels like all of this was for nothing and that really pisses me off! It strongly suggests that the real motive behind the TV project was not ownership, but profit. Obviously I will never know for sure what Ms. Swift's real intentions are/were, but my assessment as someone who is not a swifty, but a music fan that does want Taylor to succeed and make great music, I feel like my time and energy were thoroughly wasted by Taylor's Versions.
Ok, rant over. Thank you Mr. Snare and anyone with the patience to read this far. If you're a Swiftie, I mean you no ill will. I like too like a lot of Taylor Swift's music. Reply with your favorite TS song and we'll have a good time!
P.S. I haven't forgotten about the vault tracks. Cool idea, still doesn't justify the fanfare IMO.

As always, love this format and love hearing your looser thoughts on stuff.
In regards to the MASSIVE Taylor Swift video you mention at the end…I’d be so down for that. I mean, I hope you don’t lose your mind listening to those so closely so many times, and if it meant NOT doing other video ideas you have, I don’t think it’d be worth it. But as a massive undertaking for the fun of it as well as diving into more stuff connected to your degree? Let’s freaking go. I’ll make a dang evening of it.

Hey Mic! Unrelated question, but i really need to know: who’s on your personal Mount Rushmore of favorite bands? I know you have Spoon, and also The National(?), so who else is on there?

The list of reasons to not release a Rep TV is so long and the list of reasons to release it is so short lol no way we're getting it. I can't believe we are already getting so close to the 10 year anniversary of Rep and MTS! I was in college when Rep came out and things that happened when I was in college being 10 years ago feels very bad lol
I'd love the big fat Taylor's version spot the difference video! Sounds like a massive undertaking, but also sounds very interesting.
Thoughts on today's DK Bananza Direct? 👀
Also, this fit with the wine glass is giving Squilliam.

Swiftie here :) Great video! Here, as asked for Mr Snare, are my thoughts:
- Love the idea of a comparisons video. As someone who never stopped listening to the “original” versions and found the differences in the TV’s too jarring to listen to it would be really interesting to know what those are and maybe ask the question why are the “worse”? Is it purely a nostalgia thing? Or is it something more technical in the recording process? I know Max Martin didn’t come back for his tracks in the project, and I personally feel this really impacted ‘1989’.
- It came across to me Taylor was happy with how Debut came out, so I would not be surprised if we see it released next year for the 20th anniversary of that album’s release.
- To add to the points around why Taylor may not be keen on releasing/re-recording the album, the relationship she wrote about on there came to an end a couple of years ago after over half a decade together, so she might not be willing to revisit that.
- Maybe the reputation vault tracks could be released for the tenth anniversary of the channel… I mean the album release? (/jk)
- Taylor’s letter included a word with twelve “i”s in word “this”. I am sure as ever she is cooking up something, but I hope she is also getting a nice long break.
- This is on the dream list but I would love Taylor to work with Aaron and create some sort of concept album with a fictional narrative and a folk-country sound.
