The Best Music Biopic I've Seen In Years

here's an exclusive video for you all — an impromptu vlog about the Robbie Williams monkey biopic from last year. if you haven't seen or heard of it, "Robbie Williams monkey biopic" might sound sacrilegious. i'm telling you though, it's stellar. enjoy my ranting and raving!

The Best Music Biopic I've Seen In Years

I've only just watched the movie and I've been excited to watch this and hear what you thought of it! I'm from the UK and grew up with Robbie's music but not as it was released, like I was born just after Take That split in the 90s, so I didn't witness his rise to fame because I was baby!! So it was interesting to see that from his perspective, but in a less literal way (his Netflix doc does literal well, would recommend). A Rogue Robbie Recommendation (RRR?) for you would be his 2005 song Tripping, I think it's his most underrated song and a total masterpiece 🥳

I'm Aussie & Robbie is huge here so it was big in cinemas here & the movie even won Australia's biggest movie award(he performed and did a hilarious speech so go find that) as well especially as it was an Aussie director & the movie was most made in the state of Victoria as well. I thought it was a great film. I got over the monkey if it all after like 5mins. When they released info years ago saying Robbie is getting a biopic but he's being played as a cgi monkey I was like is this a joke? & when I saw the trailer I was like well I think it's kinda smart bc Americans will talk about it & be confused & some might become fans which did happen. It's just that the movie cost so much & a lot of America didn't go see it so that's why it didn't go well.

The Robbie Kong movie was great! It's a little biopic-ish in the plot but it compensates in music and insanity. I was mindblown when I watched the Knebworth scene. If you want to get into Robbie Williams (wink) go with the albums from '97 to '02, it's the highest point in his career.

i feel like a video about movie biopics in general could be a good way to get eyes on the movie!! would love to see an exploration about all the different ways people's stories have been told i grew up listening to robbie and i loved da monkey :)

Oooh yeah I like this format for the Patreon a lot! I’ve always felt like “I feel like this guy and I would run into each other at a friend-of-a-friend’s house party and have a long talk about music and movies” when I watch your videos, and this video is like one step closer to that. haha

Guess I'm the second American who knows nothing about Robbie Willams! Other than the fact that he performed with One Direction at the X Factor final in 2010, a moment that will forever live rent free in my mind ☺️ really enjoying this vloggy type of video! I'll be honest, I didn't even know this movie was coming out but you've fully sold me on it. Sounds like they hit the millenial/elder gen Z niche exactly with the monkey aspect. Maybe I'll watch this tonight to distract myself from the Lucy Dacus show I'm too sick to attend lol. Thanks so much for sharing your honest thoughts, can't wait to see where this little community takes you!

U should watch the Netflix mini docuseries on Robbie Williams. Robbie goes through his entire career while watching never before seen BTS footage. It’s a captivating watch..

I was so excited to see you release a Patreon!! I've been a subscriber for years now, I consistently love what you put out onto the Youtube sphere. As for Patreon content ideas, may I suggest mini DDD's for lesser known/indie-ish artists, ones that may not warrant a full length DDD? I love learning about the evolution of an artist's discography, their impact, etc., even if I personally don't listen to them (I rewatch the AJR one a lot, even though I've never voluntarily listened to their music lol)

tara woodard

thank you!! i'll definitely continue to play around with the format and what topics i cover with it.

Mic The Snare

ooh i haven't seen Piece by Piece yet!! that's definitely next on my watchlist

This is such a great way to use the new Patreon! Would love to see other more chill vlog type videos on here, maybe even use it to talk about less music-related topics that don’t quite fit the theme of the yt channel, but you would still want to discuss?

Love the format! I liked the movie but if you take out the monkey (and I love the monkey), at its core it’s not that different from your standard music biopic that we’ve seen a lot over the past decade But maybe that’s ok, because (I can’t stress this enough) I did enjoy the cool monkey

If you're looking for suggestions on Robbie albums to listen to, the run of albums with Guy Chambers (Life Thru A Lens, I've Been Expecting You, Sing When You're Winning, Swing When You're Winning and Escapology) is probably the best place to start, they're my favourites, especially Escapology. And on the topic of biopics with a gimmick, what did you think of the Lego Pharrel Williams one Piece By Piece assuming you've seen it?

Love that you made this video! I watched Better Man a couple months ago after seeing part of the Rock DJ scene and haven’t stopped thinking about the movie or the music since. Happy to be a supporter on here, and I’m looking forward to your upcoming videos!

agreed. and ooh i gotta see Sinners soon too!

As a UK Xennial I was in the prime age bracket for Take That when they cam on to the scene (I was 12 in 1993) and as someone who was there at the time I cannot understate how huge they were and then Robbie was in the UK; you couldn't escape them and their music. They were not my thing at the time (I've come to appreciate them more recently - Pray is genuinely an excellent song), but I had classmates who were obsessed, and I can clearly remember how I found out about when they split up; one of the children's charities in the UK set up a helpline for distraught fans because of the news. The closest I can equate it to is One Direction and the mania around that band in the early 2010s. Suggestion: Maybe it's time for a Robbie Williams DDD and include Better Man as part of that? 🤣(/jk - somewhat)

i went to see this movie on new years eve, and i havent been able to stop thinking about it since. growing up in scotland, i understood the impact robbie had on people about ten years older than me. this movie was fantastically goofy, yet really impressively dark when it needed to be? so glad to hear you enjoyed it as well mic :)

Harley Boyce

Don't worry, I also had no idea who Robbie Williams is 😂

Next to “Sinners” this is one of the best movies of the year. Just wished they promoted it better.
