Comments

About the comment at the beginning the comment about not watching certain star trek shows right away after this one or whatever. I'm just enjoying the ride of watching it with someone who is watching for the first time so all in your own time.

Rylee

Yes the conversation with Riker happened before the hallucination happened

Jonathan Emery

As I mentioned on a previous post, I actually really like a lot of the season 7 episodes - especially the ones that are "out there" like this one! The whole episode is unnerving, but I always found the concept of certain "things" embedded in the structure of the ship to be particularly creepy (I won't say what the "things" are for spoiler reasons). It always struck me as such a horrifying idea, especially considering what goes into constructing a starship. Which actually reminds me of another thing I enjoyed about this episode: it gives us a little glimpse into the construction of the Enterprise - something I always found interesting. Involving Utopia Planitia personnel was a cool, original way to "frame" this "mystery."

Visible Pixels

I thought the same. Especially because in real life, without magic and weird sci-fi reasons, sometimes you NEVER find out why someone did it. Though I don't think that completely negates the earlier discussions about suicide.

Joe Concepts

Have so many comments I could make about the Troi and Worf stuff, but they'd all be spoilers for this and like, two or three TV series and a couple movies at least.

Joe Concepts

A neat episode for being the first time we see inside one of the nacelles, the two parts at the back of the ship kept slightly apart from it, where the warp bubble is generated from, thus part of the engines.

Nolan

Worse was that was there was an actual suicide, but it was played simply as a plot point to end the mystery.

Ben Chan

Well, while the relationship was part of the illusion, Worf talking to Riker was IMMEDIATELY BEFORE opening the door. I believe this was intentionally back-to-back to confuse the viewers as to whether or not it happened in the story or the story-within-the-story.

J Riley

Perhaps a poor choice of words (English is not my native tongue). All was clear after the reveal, just forgot what happened before or after the start of the hallucination. So had to backtrack to get that cleared up (for myself).

Pickupthepieces76

It's not that confusing. Everything that happens after Troi and Worf go to the nacelle tube and he opens it is a vision until almost the end of the episode when he stops her from jumping. It's only been seconds for him, though. You can tell because she wasn't wearing her blue uniform in the vision, and she was when Worf stopped her. I feel bad that Kat got so excited over Worf and Troi hooking up but none of that was real.

Thontor

Yeah I read in the Next Generation Companion book that Jonathan Frakes thought that scene with Worf was a hallucination, so he played it differently than he usually would.

Eric

He also had a notable guest appearance on The X-Files (the two-parter episodes "Sein und Zeit" and "Closure"), as the distraught father of a little girl who mysteriously vanishes. BTW, would love to see the Gals react to The X-Files someday...

Alexander Caldwell

Pretty sure Jonathan Frakes felt the same way; he often calls Marina "Imzadi" at the conventions.

Alexander Caldwell

I can't help it. I loooove it 😂✨️

Time Lord

As two Troi-Worf shippers over here... We love it 🤭😌

Time Lord

If I'm interpenetrating what Kat was trying to say I agree with her. I wish that if they were going to do an episode about this topic they should do it straight and not add in this telepathic echo nonsense that has nothing to do with suicide, it almost feels disrespectful to take something very real and say it was due to something that fantastical.

Mike

I was confused as well and just quickly scanned the episode again. The first Worf/Troi encounter in her quarters where nothing happened except for some awkward pauses was real. It was then that Worf asked those questions of Riker, so that was also real. The rest was pretty much an hallucination. They don't show any exterior ship shots or captain's log I believe in that period as to show we are in someone's head. Also everything has to be from their perspective of course.

Pickupthepieces76

Really thought Kat would hate the Worf-Troi pairing. From what I remember that while Michael Dorn loved it, Marina Sirtis hated the relationship, thinking Riker was the only one for her character.

Mark Chrisco

Oof, that opening scene hit hard even knowing what was going to happen. On a lighter note.... Picard: "...authorized to exceed warp speed limitations." Me: imagines a speed limit sign in space, then imagines Picard turing on the exterior flashing lights and sirens 🚨 so they can go faster

Sythurizm

On a lighter note. I thought I recognized the actor who played Lt. Pierce, Sure enough it was Mark Rolston, a great, "That guy" actor. He was also Boggs, the leader of the Sisters in "The Shawshank Redemption" and Pvt. Drake in "Aliens". He also made another Star Trek appearance in Enterprise.

Bruce Bromley

Maybe no in-universe explanation, but I for one thought she looked a hell of a lot better in the uniform, and more "uniform" with the rest of the cast (hell, even the "skant" uniform she wore in the pilot, while sexist, would have been more aligned with the regular uniforms). Also, while I get that Starfleet isn't supposed to be a "military" organization (spoiler alert: they kind of are, though), it still looks better when the members of an explicitly hierarchical command structure dress the same. Helps with that whole "discipline in the ranks" thing...

Alexander Caldwell

To answer the question about Troi's uniform, yeah she was normally in more of a bodysuit. In 'Chain of Command' Captain Jellico told her to change into a regulation uniform. From then on she wears the regular uniform. As to why she continues wearing the uniform after Jellico left, I'm not sure there's an in-universe explanation for that

Logan Thyne

This episode is bonkers; like, "The Alternative Factor" level bonkers. I never really cared for it, though it did have a delightfully creepy performance from guest star Mark Rolston (Drake from "Aliens"; Boggs from "The Shawshank Redemption"). I'm sure the Trorf (Troi-Worf) shippers get a kick out of it, though. 🤮

Alexander Caldwell

Been looking forward to this episode. One of my favorites. :D
