I think there’s gender stuff behind this practice, but also Jodie in person feels so much like a friend, so, first name. And also when I hear Whit(t)aker and Doctor Who, I think David Whitaker, story editor when DW began. But why not think of him as ‘David’ rather than ‘Whitaker’? Probably a little patriarchy behind that.

I think another reason the Doctor was most affected by the Sonic Mine was because her biology compared to Ryan, Graham, and Yaz is much more complicated, so takes more time to heal. With 3 brain stems, 3 brain hemispheres, 2 hearts, super strength and lots of other abilities, I can see why she'd heal slower.

This is such a wonderful comment!! We appreciate you being here so much and so happy we can give back in some way!! - Kat

It was a little after this episode I fell off watching, as I stated previously it was because I had been having to pirate the eps, they had left Hulu and hadn't signed up with HBOMax yet and I just felt too guilty to continue.

Interesting discussion about how you refer to this actor by her first name. That’s a tendency of my own, I must admit. But then if I think back to ALL previous Doctors and how I’ve referred to the actors, it does vary. The first three I tend to use surname (Hartnell, Troughton and Pertwee), but the 4th I have almost always referred to as Tom (even before the 6th Doctor came along with the same surname). I tend to think that’s because of his apparent approachability and warm character - funny and friendly with that huge grin. And I feel similar with JW. Similar with the 7th, who I alternate referring to as either Sylvester or McCoy. Of the later Doctors, 8 is either surname or full name, 9 and 10 surname, 11 full name, 12 surname.

I've liked Whitaker's 😉 run as the Doctor more than I realized. I'm more convinced than ever that this era suffers from the complete 180 is story telling style AND the shorter run. I like all the new era Doctors but Tenant is my least favourite and yet he was gifted with the most episodes and specials. I wish Capaldi and Whitaker were given the same luxury. As for her odd behaviour in the beginning of this episode I wasn't bothered by it at all. At first she didn't realize she was on a ship, she'd been unconscious for 4 days, still wasn't feeling good physically, feels incredible responsibility in the safety of her "fam". When she does realize it's a ship the other 4 things are still true. She just needed a nudge as we all do from time to time. As a being that's over 2000 years old selfishness, grumpiness etc. are all in there and can come out when it's least expected.

Back when you started this season, I posted the comment that I'm no fan of Chris Chibnall's time as showrunner, but would enjoy seeing the Gallfrey Gals' reactions either way. I can follow that up by saying I'm really enjoying the way the Gals are finding nuances and aspects of these episodes that I did not notice before. I can't say it has changed my opinion about this era of the show— I still find it marred by poor story structure— but I can say that watching these reactions is really plussing my experience of it. So let me just point out, the Gallifrey Gals are more than rewarding the cost of the Patreon subscription, adding to my experience as a long-time fan. Thanks Gals!

Quite true. I can imagine someone from only a few decades ago scoffing at the idea that a famous musician could be called Ice Cube, for instance, and that someone in the future might name their son after him. Or any of the other weird names celebrities choose for themselves or their children.

When it was released, I remember this was maybe not hated, but certainly not *loved* by the reviewers. Honestly, though, this is my favourite of the season, besides the next episode and the first. Then again, my initial reaction to the episodes of the season were mostly "fine", but at the same time, the main characters never really connected with me, so I couldn't get into it beyond that. I'm still struggling understanding why, but that's how it is. I wish I could have enjoyed this as much as the previous seasons (after loving just about everything with Bill), but that's just how it is.

I find it weird that Ryan and Graham were so quick to deny that Avocado was an ancient earth hero. they are 4600 years in the future, that is plenty of time for somebody to become ancient history.

Maybe this episode is TOO fast-paced. This is probably my fourth time through this one. It's always been my least-favorite episode of the season mainly because I thought the three separate plots kept tripping over each other, but I actually liked it this time. I spent more of my concentration on the pilot and her family and the pregnant guy and Ryan's character development- which, perhaps having already seen the rest and knowing where the thread is going- makes the earlier parts seem more poignant. And Grace, despite being dead, continues to be a major character in the crew. I love the Pting. I think the Pting is cosmic. The other bits used to annoy me, because it meant less Pting time. I think before this rewatch I would have given it a 5, but I'll kick it up to an eight, higher than Arachnids.

I thought it was Stitch (from Lilo &...). Anyway, I think Jodie's selfishness is a call back to classic Doctors, esp. the Third who was always the smartest person in the room and let you know that in no uncertain terms. Capaldi had that too, but in later seasons did it as a joke.

Mark Ten

Love how fast paced and silly this episode is while still making the time for emotional moments. 13's antimatter speech is amazing to watch because one of my favorite things about her is she is not afraid to geek out and encourages others to do the same, ask questions and want to learn. Also, Yaz punting the Pting is the best thing ever!
