The First Duty, Gallifrey Gals Get Warped! S5Ep19

Comments

A powerful, underrated episode that like so many good Trek episodes doesn't need to hide behind Sci-fi. The direction is top tier; in particular the camera shots when Picard is interrogating Wesley in his tradition are masterful. And head canon: Boothby is a Q. Tapestry gives clues why that is the case.

Troy Convers

The Boothby actor was in Robin Williams' Popeye as Pappy. Such a good episode.

Dan Williams

Gotcha, I wondering when they are planning on watching Picard

Ryan George

Erm they have 2 seasons of TNG left, 7 seasons of DS9 and 7 seasons of Voyager... So 16 seasons so I reckon you have to wait about 407 episodes, so it may be some time before that happens

Craig Burkey

For TNG Season 6, will you be watching DS9 episodes concurrently as it aired with TNG? Otherwise, the 2-part episode "Birthright" (and others in season ) may not fully make sense... I would hope you watch TNG and DS9 in stardate order....

Matt Hensley

Will you guys be reacting to lower decks?

Ryan George

Hear, hear! And while not wishing to co-opt your point; They're awful! At least the 2009 movie was quite well made even if it wasn't very "Treky", but the garbage they've been pumping recently is depressing.

Pirateman

Did you ever hear the story about when denise crosby to will wheaton to the coming to america set? When they were shooting tng season 1 and coming to america at the same time. They were trying to blend in to the african dance in their spade suits. Funny stuff

Henry Fuller

I’m glad Katrina got to see another one of Picard’s classic speeches. Pretty soon, you’ll be able to listen to “The Picard Song” by DarkMateria without spoiling anything.

Matthew Zeidman

One of the best episodes. I hope you guys go on to watch Deep Space 9 and Voyager

Jonathan Emery

This is one of my favourite episodes from the whole 7 year run, full of gravitas and life lessons. It’s up there with The Drumhead for me. Looking at the remainder of season 5, there’s only really one out and out dud in there, at least for me. Well, dud may be harsh, but it’s certainly not to the same standard as the others, I would say. The other 6 episodes are all good to great!

Matthew Scrivens

this is one of my personal favorite episodes its so good from every angle in my opinion

Rylee

Good point. After the first few episodes of voyager I stopped thinking of Locarno.

Mark Ten

"Uncle" Martin!

Mark Chrisco

When this first aired, I remember getting a kick out of seeing veteran actor Ray Walston cast as Boothby. Although he's enjoyed acclaim for films like South Pacific and Damn Yankees, for us fans of 1960s sitcoms, he'll always be "My Favorite Martian".

Raja

If I remember correctly they still show this in the Air Force Academy to classes as an example of leadership.

Andrew Hogan

This is what I’ve heard multiple times along with the payment issue which has been mentioned as the reason for a lot of other scenes being redone in the show.

Andrew Hogan

A notable episode for me because it name dropped my hometown. Probably cause the '88 winter Olympics put us on the map. Hence the reference to skiing. Nevermind that all the Olympic facilities, while well-maintained are ALREADY dated at this point 30 years later, forget what they'll look like 300 years later. I dunno, maybe Wes and Josh were doing an "Olympic Tour" as a hobby or something. I will say, that as far a Locarno and Paris being similar characters, they are, but I think there are subtle differences too. Paris is more cavalier, he's not as driven or manipulative. Locarno is a dreamer, as all in Starfleet Academy seem to be, but he's also a doer, while Paris always dreamed big, but he was a bit more flighty, not as tied down to one central drive. "The first duty of every Starfleet Officer is to the Truth!" - that speech is why I try to always look for the truth in anything, and where I stand based on my own feelings. There's a lot of obfuscation out in the world, always on either side of an issue, whether intentional or not, so as much as it'd be nice to listen to each side of a debate and choose which one sounds right to me, I tend to look beyond that and look at all the possible motivations too before I align my own feelings with the big talked about social ideal of the day. It's also why, despite the fact that there are contingents of fans who will support everything Star Trek and feel served by and rewarded personally by every media product made under that title, and that there is another contingent of fans who hate every new thing for bigoted, close-minded reasons, I will not just shut up and not say that I really don't fucking like the new shows for my own reasons that have to do with how it does NOT serve me, meet my artistic ideals, or effectively carry off it's messages beyond the feelings it elicits in the moments. I HATE that not liking them puts me on the side of the fence with bad faith fans that argue against them for ugly reasons, but I CANNOT lie about my feelings about the show simply because of that association. They effing suck. And frankly, those fans who argue dirty and constantly put down the other side of whatever they are and 'other' them with snarky and superior holier-than-thou attitudes also effing suck. Star Trek made me a contrarian when it comes to what society views as acceptable, and to question hegemonic thought. That this fandom has a tendency to embrace unquestioning loyalty or unquestioning negativity also, effing sucks because the truth between two sides is always. In. The. Middle. And that's my godsdamn truth about Star Trek.

Nolan

U got the story right. He WAS Lacarno in the original script. However, the writer still owned the rights to the character and would have to be paid for EACH appearance. They decided just to rename him to "Tom Paris" and change the story a little bit

Sal Sanchez

I know when casting for Voyager they really wanted Locarno, and signed Robert Duncan McNeill but because of legal entanglements had to recreate the character as Tom Paris who realistically found himself in a similar situation Locarno might have at the beginning of the series. Robert Duncan McNeill has said Locarno was a bad guy acting like a hero while Tom Paris was the opposite, a good guy at heart acting like a bad guy.

Mark Chrisco

Boothby always makes me think of the CBS miniseries of “The Stand” from 1994.

Andrew Pulrang

Every time Boothby comes on screen, The South Pacific soundtrack plays in my head. Can't imagine why....

Firefly24601

And letting the father of his friend believe that his son was at fault. I dont care how 'bad' Wes felt, that was an act of a despicable person. He still wasnt going to do the right thing until Daddy/Picard slapped him upside the head. Feh! Im totally disgustapated!

Mark Ten

Sorry, Wes & the others got off too easy for not owning up right away and then conspiring to lie to the court. Is there no Honor Code at the academy?!? Star Fleet must be short of officers after all the battles with the Borg. Shame when you see standards lowered like this for expediency.

Mark Ten

Beverly's response to the obvious cover up is such a Mom moment for her. "Not my son!"

Joe Concepts

Why can't we see episodes of Voyager /DS9

ian webster

Definitely one of my favourite episodes

ian webster

I think it's so weird to see doors with handles on TNG.

Dan Crucy

This is a rough episode. Maybe Nick LaCarno is not the name he used in the Academy because his father is an Admiral and was allowed to use a pseudonym so he could earn his merit on his own. Here is my theory about Wes having more blame: One thing that is troubling for me about Wesley in this one is that he says, "I don't know how but I managed to activate the emergency transporter." I think Wes programmed the computers to transport as soon as the proximity alarms when off at a certain distance (-10m). They knew it was dangerous where all 5 pilots would lose their lives. They couldn't explain that to the inquiry for automatic transport set up in a specific proximity. I don't believe that 4/5 could activate the transporters manually when all of the pilots normally don't. It is more likely that Wes messed up on Josh's transporter and that resulted in his death. The escape didn't work just as much as the maneuver ended up in the loss of life. Or maybe Josh was given the specs by Wes to program his own shuttle and given his trouble or disgust of math, didn't program the transporter correctly and Wes never checked his work and could hold the blame there. Maybe it was set to 1m. So when Josh's shuttle was less than 10m all the transporters when off except for Josh's and everyone else transported before the collision.

Christian Rennie

In my headcanon "Locarno" was just an alias, because he's an admiral's son and wanted to prove himself without getting special treatment.

MrEvers

Whatever the real story for why the character on Voyager was Tom Paris and not Nick Locarno, it's more interesting to me what the actor has said about how he played the character: he said in one interview that he saw Paris as the inverse of Locarno. Locarno appeared outwardly the perfect starfleet cadet but was rotten inside, while Paris was outwardly rough and undisciplined but had a good heart. So that's the actor's take on how he played the two characters, which I find really interesting.

Keith Goodnight

This is one of my favorite episodes. I mentioned it obliquely in some earlier comments, but when Picard is chewing Wesley out, I feel that speech in my bones. When I was an adolescent and struggling with doing the right thing, I would sometimes think about it. I'm not going to say that I always did the right thing, as a result, but it definitely helped me make good choices. Season 5 is also my favorite TNG season, Kat. And there's still a few real bangers left.

R. Chang

I think in one novel they say nick locarno was tom paris. tom used an alias as cadett so the other cadetts don't compare him with this dad.

Redjac

Part of Paris's character was he screwed up in the shadow of his big time starfleet admiral father, something that didn't happen here so maybe they really wanted that aspect to Paris? Idk, I don't have much love for Voyager.

Mike

Same. Yeah, you can't really blame Will "Wheaties" (that's what my brother and I called him) for the way his character was written and directed, and he was a young actor finding his chops.

Henchman Twenty1

Tom Paris was supposed to be Nick Locarno. I'd like to believe he changed his name and they are the same character.

Adam Brown

2 other reasons that may be the cause of not using the Nick Locarno character in Voyager are his name and not having graduated. They may have felt that Nick Locarno wasn't a name that would stand up as a main character. Also, Tom Paris background had that he had been a Starfleet Officer before he went to prison. Nick Locarno never graduated. Perhaps they just had certain character profile for him that didn't fully match the Locarno character. This episode is a favourite of mine from TNG.

Peter

Some episodes I might not get around to for a couple of days, a lot of them I'll watch the next day, but this is one of the episodes I'll wait up and watch when it comes out at 3am where I live. I knew this would be a good one and I was right...

Brendon Waldron

I never really cared for wesley as a character. When I was watching this when it came out he was a few years older than me IRL and something about his know it all "always saves the day" smugness bothered me. But I must say that rewatching the series through Kats eyes have given me a new perspective on Wesley and while he will never be one of my favorite characters, this episode has more emotional resonance with me now after seeing Wesley through that perspective for 5 seasons. Another reason I love these reactions.
