Strange Times
Added 2023-08-03 13:44:38 +0000 UTCIt is strange being a full-time YouTuber, each day is unpredictable. One Tuesday you are chatting with a high-up working on the final stages of the EU AI Act, then Wednesday you are examining a weird LLM quirk [try copying 100 of the letter 'a': e.g. 'a a a a a a' on GPT 3.5 - it's super weird but not sufficiently so for a full video]. One day being sent free advanced copies of AI books in the mail [quite a good one actually], then next day doing a collab with a multi-million sub Youtuber and reaching new records with SmartGPT [with my excellent colleague and ML engineer Joshua Stapleton - hope to discuss on channel soon].
I am slowly trying to expand Patreon benefits, like bringing in a Discord [I am lucky to have a volunteer admin now], creating new tiers [after being asked to many times!] and posting a bit more. You have been generously patient with the sparse updates so far, thank you. Still figuring out what you guys want to know more about [is it that interesting that I get unexpected offers to sell the channel and others to speak with unnamed agencies and billionaires?]. It's kinda cool/complimentary but I still aware enough to realise it's much, much more to do with AI going double-exponential than anything about me.

AI Insiders Discord limited alas to that tier, but if you are subbed there, here's how to set it up: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/212052266-Getting-Discord-access

2023-12-12 12:03:41 +0000 UTCNot to rush you, Philip. Just checking to make sure i don't miss this out. I suppose there will be an email / patreon post to announce the discord right?

2023-12-12 12:00:31 +0000 UTCGreat that you had volunteers to help with Discord Admin. I launched a small Discord without this and it didn’t take long for some bad actors to ruin the party. That said am working on an LLM agent to manage some low hanging Discord fruit. If it’s any good, I’ll let ya’ll know.

2023-12-07 11:28:32 +0000 UTCi just joined the 2nd tier which is more expensive than the lower tier. the 1st tier had discord benefits but the 2nd tier had "private community" benefits what's the difference?

2023-10-20 08:21:11 +0000 UTCThe man is busy. I see it as more of a way to directly support his youtube content. And at some point I'm sure he will give this page some love. It's not a 'con-job' you probably just didn't cancel correctly.
2023-10-01 17:49:28 +0000 UTCThis is a con-job of the highest order. I cancelled my membership several months ago but continued to be billed up to yesterday each month. I only noticed this today. There is no useful content here. Just fan club interactions. Where is the content AI? How do you get it, if it exists? Can someone point me to it?

2023-08-31 09:35:47 +0000 UTCThank for the update Philip and fun to see things moving for you so quickly. I continue to appreciate the efforts you put into this space. BTW, I tried your duplicate the letter "a" experiment and got some interesting results. It was fun tuning the prompt(s) to get desired results. It was also interesting that you could "creep" up on the magic number and it would never drop into it's infinite loop, at least as far as I tested it. Keep up the good work and good luck!

2023-08-29 13:35:29 +0000 UTCI loved your channel from the onset, but it is your work on SmartGPT that was the final nudge towards patreon. Considering the time required to investigate such a complex subject THOROUGHLY, I appreciate your quality over quantity approach. So no complaints here regarding your frequency of publishing

2023-08-12 13:02:27 +0000 UTCAre all jobs measured by the frequency of output? Doing a proper job on SmartGPT alone requires tens of thousands of questions and grading. Interviews don't organise themselves or come up on a set schedule. Papers aren't always released on a set frequency, or are of equal importance. Not sure why you felt the need to leave such a vituperative comment but please do leave my Patreon as you clearly don't feel the channel is worth any time.

2023-08-09 16:03:48 +0000 UTCI think it is absolutely awesome that you have all these opportunities. That said it is what I would've expected with the content you create. Do I need to know how the sausage is made? Probably not, unless you have spare time & thought it was interesting. I'm big on life balance, and just doing what you've been doing is why I supported. So keep on keepin' on mate.

2023-08-05 16:03:04 +0000 UTCThe 100 "a a a"s didn't produce an interesting response from ChatGPT-3.5-turbo (via the website).. maybe you just mean a regular GPT-3.5 via API? It just said I sent a bunch of a's and suggested asking a question. Great other comments here. Discord server is a great idea, and I'm looking forward to that. Tidbits too minor for a video would be cool but never sacrifice video production for Patreon benefits. I think you know this already, but avoid committing to benefits that have a per-supporter effort attached to them, because they won't be able to scale if you're fortunate enough to keep gaining more supporters. I think your Patreon supporters will overwhelmingly support you voluntarily out of appreciation for your free-as-in-beer work, rather than transactionally. Thank you for what you do.

2023-08-03 16:41:24 +0000 UTCGreat advice David. My central mission at this time is to convey to the public that underestimating AI is an epochal mistake.
Philip
2023-08-03 16:40:06 +0000 UTCI totally agree with you on the UI front - there are some really basic things that are a glaring omission from OpenAI. The chat interface needs a re-sizeable text entry field and the whole account side of the website needs a complete overhaul with lots of new features required.
Sean Betts
2023-08-03 16:37:04 +0000 UTCHey Phillip, Thanks for all the effort you’ve put into your videos. As others have pointed out, you seem to really be one of the only voices in the space with enough technical expertise to provide useful commentary while also good enough communication skills to explain simplify technical concepts in ways that are understandable by laypeople to the field. It’s understandable that your video output has slowed down. It seems like most of the current developments are more technical in nature and not easily brought down to earth for less technically knowledgable folks. It’s not too surprising that most of the general population seems to still be either oblivious to or terrified of how much AI is going to completely change society. Maybe I’m wrong, but I get the impression most of the people in charge of development throughout the field are tech-bro libertarians who look down on studying anything humanities related. Then you also have all the con-artists who hopped to hyping AI now that NFTs are basically dead further degrading the perception of anything AI related to the general population. I feel like there needs to be a Mac/Windows breakthrough in AI interface design for these tools to ever catch on with the general population. To people that have been coding for years and years, a chatbot interface probably seems quite intuitive. I feel though to the general non-technical population, a chatbot interface is about half a step above typing into a command line. It’s crazy that ChatGPT has been out for more that half a year, and somehow the only way to delete conversations is either all at once or one by one. Being able to select multiple conversations at once to delete (like how you can select multiple emails to delete in gmail) would be such a useful addition. It’s such a common UI/UX pattern to overlook that I have to imagine nobody working on the development knows even the basics of UI/UX design. I don’t know if you’ve messed around with Photoshop’s implementation of AI, but I think it is much better than AI art apps that are primarily focused around AI. I understand the dislike people have of Adobe, but Photoshop has been such a cool app for such a long time. Having access to all the other tools that Photoshop has in addition to AI generation is so much more useful than AI generation alone. There are a lot of obvious use cases for AutoGPT/SmartGPT, but I feel like a well designed GUI that somehow can abstract certain elements of interacting with GPT-4 or whatever other LLM in combined with AutoGPT is where the real magic will be. I feel hopeful that you won’t overlook the importance of a well designed interface in the development of SmartGPT. I felt like it was a good sign when you poked fun at OpenAI’s ugly website a while back. I don’t know about you, but it’s hard for me to trust a company like OpenAI very much when someone like Peter Thiel is one of the main backers and seemingly fairly close to the CEO of the company. It’s nice that Sam Altman regularly pays lip service to the ethical considerations of what his company is doing, but only time will tell if he really means any of that? Personally, I’ve not yet been convinced.

2023-08-03 16:28:44 +0000 UTCCongrats on all the collaborations. I know from personal experience how overwhelming it can be. There are 4.43 million things to do but your brain is running on fumes. To answer your question about what we'd like to see (I obviously can't speak for anyone but myself) but this is where I see things going: The science is advancing quickly, as are the deployments. Fortunately, the halls of power seem to be paying attention to AI (EU, US, UK, UN, etc) so I'm more confident that the governments of the world will make the pivot. Obviously we cannot accept anything as a foregone conclusion, but the time, energy, attention, and (most importantly) investment is there. What it means to humans, though, has yet to be answered. We will need to renegotiate our social contract, our relationship to labor, and our relationship to businesses and governments. As many podcasters, entrepreneurs, and others are saying "It's no longer a question if 'if' it's only a question of 'when'," with respect to AI and disruption. I've been focusing on collaborating with businesses and universities to get multiplicative benefits for my reach. The biggest strength you have, that I see, is your ability to communicate things extremely clearly and in an accessible manner. I'm not sure what your personal mission is, but I would say that you ought to parlay your strengths to your personal mission. How do you want the world to change? Where do you want people to look, especially if they aren't looking there now? And, perhaps most importantly, what do you think people need to know that they don't already know? Hope this helps. Cheers!

2023-08-03 16:01:05 +0000 UTCThanks for posting, Philip. Be fair to yourself. You are the best on YouTube for what you do. Sure, there are some brilliant folks posting videos aimed at developers, or even AI researchers. I've watched some of those, but most of them are outside my experience. There are others who post about AI developments for general audiences, but they are not as competent or thoughtful as you are. You are well suited for the task you have taken on in this unique moment. (So much so that you are the first person I've ever supported on Patreon!) As far as what I'd like to see, I'd just say more of what you are doing, if that is at all possible. Other people post about AI "developments." The AI Breakdown does a particularly good job (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKelCK4ZaO6HeEI1KQjqzWA). Don't try to replicate that. Your contribution is digging in deeply on issues related to capability growth. I'd love to see two 8-12 minute videos on that per week. I was looking forward to seeing a deep-dive comparison of Claude to GPT-4, particularly focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of the 100k context capability. How close are OpenAI's competitors coming to replicating GPT-4? Do we think Anthropic or Google will leapfrog OpenAI before GPT-5? What are we seeing in the competition that will almost certainly appear in GPT-5? I love the idea of a Discord server for Patreon supporters. I hoped to be able to interact with the sort of folks who find your channel worth an investment. Thanks again for what you are doing, Philip. Keep up the good work! Ethan

2023-08-03 14:34:24 +0000 UTCI feel like the next big step in AI are agents that can successfully complete many tasks and recover from setbacks. As I think you mentioned, the current versions get off track or confused. It would be great to better understand that progress. Are there papers about better agent architectures? Papers that show agents are improving at a certain rate? Maybe others that show new agent benchmarks and current scores? Keep up the great work!

2023-08-03 14:30:55 +0000 UTCAI might be going double-exponential ... but in my book you are the most trusted voice I turn to - to understand or at least try to understand what's really happening in this field. I'd say the offers and connections coming your way are 100% due to your obvious expertise in digesting new developments and communicating them clearly with others. That's what makes you such a trusted voice. I think we are all attempting to navigate seismic shifts in EVERYTHING to do with living - as a result of A.I. advances. How does this impact how I make a living? How can I benefit immediately and most profitably from it. How does it impact the future of work, period? And thus, the future of how society organizes itself (and where will I and my family land during / after this transition)? Ultimately, I think we're all trying to figure out how to position ourselves to survive what clearly has no precedent in modern times. I've been around since the 60's - so I've seen a number of shifts. Nothing comes close to comparing ... ... and the scariest part is, nobody really knows how this turns out. You have insight into the technology - but also you're very good at pointing to the possible implications.

2023-08-03 14:17:01 +0000 UTCCongrats on your channels success! It’s well deserved! There aren’t any other people looking deeply into the nuances and implications of ai with such careful thought and preparedness. Since you’re asking, what I want more than anything and haven't been able to find yet besides maybe a YouTube video here and there would be a monthly update on what a highly productive ai tool user depends on as far as their ai tech workflow and supporting tools and automation and where they are putting their time learning as in which fundamentals to consider rather than a new narrow tool that essentially just an Gpt3 or 4 API touting some specific use case that quite boring if you already know how to prompt. So many tools out there that are just GPT4 with a new skin on it. Where are you spending your TIME? What’s deserving of your time? That’s what I want to know. That’s a Patreon value prop.
