Chance the Rapper - STAR LINE (Album) | FIRST REACTION

Comments

The lyrics to drapetomania and burn ya block are way deeper than people think.

Elizabeth Rodriguez

Isn’t that tag “it’s Chicago” a producer that Saba uses a lot Interlude called circus comes to mind

Chris Cossu

I DEFINITELY heard the sections that sounded like Drake! I was having trouble figuring out why I wasn’t enjoying that song…. As soon as you said it, I knew the cadence was the problem and that was why! Thank you.

Redibelle

I think when Young Thug said I need a trunk he was referring to that one of one trunk that Pharrell made that shit like 100,000 or 500,000 or some stupid but he trying to put his gun in there is the funny part

Cameron Bergan

yo imagine cudi singing the hook on back to the go. with the patented humming in the background. plus a kanye verse? bro (and specifically kanye. not ye lol)

Popularunknown

Yeah totally understand why Vic is on that song, didn't get the Kanye take at all. What ever GPT writen verse Kanye would throw down on that song would not be worth it. Also feel you on the Vic critique... I felt a slight lack of accountability from Vic in his verse which to me effected the mature tone of the song but maybe I need to relisten...

Celso Ramos

Do or Die had a huge hit in the 90s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oElwW--cz2s

WilliamT

Time is always weird, it gets faster as you age, 1 year when you’re 4 is 25% of your life but at 25, 1 year is 4% and that percentage just gets smaller every year

Ben Mansur

1:14:30 I hear that drake shi too

Julian Garcia

Maybe I’m too politically minded, but I love Drapetomania. On anyone’s side when they say cops can die and Fuck Ice. This is going on the social work playlist

Dustin Francis

I certainly think so, but Let God Sort em Out is undeniable from a critical perspective. No misses and no skips. Mich as I love this album, Gun in yo purse means Chance once again falls just short of classic status

Dustin Francis

Drapetomania was a proposed mental illness that, in 1851, American physician Samuel A. Cartwright hypothesized as the cause of enslaved Americans fleeing captivity. This hypothesis was based on the belief that slavery was such an improvement upon the lives of slaves that only those suffering from some form of mental illness would wish to escape. That song is deeper than people understand imo hes saying all those typical parts of rap the club, guns, girls and violence glorified in rap is seen as a mental illness by people from the outside but that’s because they can’t understand it’s part in the culture. Also feels also like a commentary on black culture too after the previous songs.

Brandon Wheeler

Y'all thought of reacting to Jim legacys album? It's got a Dave feature on it. One of my favorite albums of the year so far

mattmattburr

Btw, I'm not sure if that cadence is the Nelly one but if so it has roots in playground clapping chants. Specifically something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K-FpmUUc7U Crazy how we can all know that rhythm even if I'm pretty sure I've never heard that kid song before.

SAM-WISE GAMGEE

Mac has a song called Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza

Blake Ullrich

Album of the year! Maybe i’m just hyped that Chance is finally back, but this album made me feel something special

enzo

I’m sayin!

enzo

Bro this one has to be a contender. 5 songs should’ve been left off completely but come on. Imagine if it were just these 13. And thats better than many full albums.

Terry Duran

I’m in no way defending gun in yo purse, or Yung Thug, lol definitely not feeling it either.. but i got curious about Prince connecting Pharrell and LV to the Thug line. Pharrell redesigned the “classic LV bed trunk” last Oct. and also released a “soul trunk purse” last November. All that just to say that line wasn’t so disconnected. Lolol still not good, but the logic is there 😅

Calm_Curious

I really appreciate this album from Chance,I feel like he took his time with it & gave it the space it needed to have a sonically & solid project..👏🏾👏🏾💯

HotCumodity77

Only thru the 4th song, but I knew y’all would have such thoughtful insights to share. Thank you for letting me listen again for the first time through your ears. Have you watched his episode of the Grits and Eggs podcast? Even more context for this album, but also his whole life and career. He was posting on ig saying it was the best interview experience he’s ever had.

Calm_Curious

Yooooo. Stoked for this one

SAM-WISE GAMGEE

for what reason lol

Ron H

Chance made me subscribe to see the reaction!! WE BACK AH! Love yall content

Jaylen

i get your pov on drapetomania and its placement on the record, but the song itself is a fucking banger and its so funny too. the bars on it are hilarious and the fuck ice line is too fire idk why yall skipped that part

kingcane

princevv

Lloyd~Abdul

Definitely hear the drake sound as well.

Avery Miller

Listened to gun in yo purse with my girl. My first comment to her was that it sounded like a Drake song lol

Demetrius Carter

I dont think anything on here was as bad as pink panties but i get what you saying. For me only bad song is gun in yo purse, then like 3 other mid songs. The rest is great

Chris

Clark8

Chance being back is so good for rap man. This album is special

Zion

Naveed Laphir

Alan

oh nahhhhhh prince uon know about Do or Die?!?! Thats damn near a violation my boy smh That's damn near where Twista claim to fame was with that group before he start doing his solo thang. CLASSIC RAP GROUP LEGENDS in they own right absolutely

Rob Himself

Vic Mensa makes perfect sense on this they grew up together and Vic been through addiction and depression but I feel he didn’t stay on topic

Cameron Bergan

Great reaction going to make that rating and review after this 🔥

Patrick Nsubuga

No More Old Men is def about the difference in generations but even more so about how people are being killed before they get to become old men.

Michael Kirk

1:20:19 🤣🤣🤣my nigga was like “ you hearing what I’m hearing !?”

Patrick Nsubuga

This album is amazing, great reaction

Oreo Speedragon

bro the highs of this project were phenomenal. the lows were just soooo bad. reminds me of the melodic blue and pink panties. like WHYYYYY is that song on the album in general, let alone in that spot

JNC YK

I hear Drake on the song we will never mention or listen to again 😂😂

Tyler Mobley

That gun in the purse def has the drake vibes, show me a good time is what I thought of 😂

Richard Kubel

Sequencing in hip hop albums 1) very intentional and 2) a lost art form in itself hence why I think it placed right there.

Jonathan Riley

Actually! Just thought about something else. I haven’t made it to the end of the video yet so you guys may have caught the lyric. But in the last song, the 2nd verse quotes one of L’A Capone’s most famous lines, the one about his boys and 50 cent cakes. Drapetomania is definitely an important part of the larger story he’s telling with this album

Eliyannah

Stay with me cause I might be caping for chance (as a fellow artist). I think Drapetomania serves as like an audible example of the Pryor skit from the prior song We can have someone who understands the world around them that has different perspective than what we’re conditioned to think, but the moment it’s offered to us we completely dismiss it because “theyre crazy” I feel like that’s why the hook on the song was “go crazy” so many times. He and brodie painted the picture of what the WORLD sees for us and how we’ve been conditioned to see ourselves But the hook is telling us to essentially break free or “go crazy”

Jonathan Riley

I haven’t totally interpreted what he’s saying with ‘Drapetomania’ but look up the actual word. It’s a made up medical condition from an American pro-slavery race scientist in 1851. He wrote a paper saying that Black enslaved people who escape from plantations have a mental illness that forces them to want to run away. Because if we were fed & clothed regularly, there wouldn’t be any other reason to escape. So, after ‘No More Old Men’ and ‘The Negro Problem’, he drops this somewhat chaotic song that combines a real Chicago dance sound with a drill flow, featuring a drill rapper and the hook is “go crazy”. It’s easy to forget but Chance’s career started the same year Chief Keef, Lil Jojo, L’A, Durk and all those guys blew up. They the same age. And I can’t imagine the feeling of seeing so many of them buried alive or just buried. I *think* the message here is that the weight of ignored harm in our community leads us to trying to escape…..everything. It leads us to disassociate, especially the young men. It seems like it’s tying extreme gang violence to government failures and the community falling apart? Sorry for the long comment, just been giving this a lot of thought because it’s so jarring which means it’s intentional, and I can’t stop thinking about what the intention is.

Eliyannah

Same!!

Tyler Mobley

I commented on the cardi upload about ghostface dropping supreme 2 and was wondering if you guys would be interested in reacting to the first one?

Squish Wright

I’ve never clicked on anything faster , lil chano is back
