I wonder if the reason to move the ship at high tide is that there’s a possible underwater obstacle that they’re concerned the ship may not clear at low tide

2024-11-27 02:50:46 +0000 UTCIt's a shame to hear of the impending fate of the SS United States. But, realistically, the amount of money needed to do anything with her is off the scale. Retrofitting her to be a first responder Ambassador ship to hard-hit areas is a novel idea but for the money, a new ship could be built. Commercially, she was designed for "crossings" and not "cruising" and few people "cross" any longer. Turning her into another Queen Mary? Meh. That idea is done and dusted. I have heard estimates of $1B to get her back into sailing condition. Unless some billionaires step forward for this massive project, I doubt anything can save her. I'm still on the fence that she'll make it there as a reef. There is a lot that can go wrong between now and her resting on the bottom. Still, this is better than sending her to be broken up.
