No, I Can't Go To Florida

I get so much honest and heartfelt advice from guys who are just trying to help, so let me put a finer point on it - Location Matters... A lot!

No, I Can't Go To Florida No, I Can't Go To Florida

I live in NJ and would never live in other areas like Florida etc, California you have earthquakes, fires, floods etc. other areas all have major problem with weather or natural earth problem, tornados, fires, floods, etc Here we have variety of seasons, a little of everything but no major problem... I went to school in Philly. Stay here and enjoy.

Hey, as somebody that's worked in the security world, I just wanted to say I really like your name.

Bob Darlington

Yea, I wont go to Florida for the same reason Fran. Even though IL is good, Chicagoland is expensive compared to Philly. You are also unfortunately correct that your face and your hat is "flaunting" it. No its not really flaunting it. Ugh, I wish for a better world where we can live anywhere where nobody bothers us. Just too much shit that happens to us trans people.

SingularCurve

Fyi, the bathroom law only applies to buildings owned/operated by local (not Federal) government.[1] You could argue that's a symptom of general anti-trans sentiment, making life overall unsafe. But you won't have to hold it the whole time you're visiting NASA. :-) [1] https://www.aclufl.org/en/know-your-rights/know-your-rights-floridas-public-restroom-changing-facility-ban

Huh, I hadn't considered Philly being the cheapest big city. I'm in Ohio waiting for the next hammer to fall and not sure where I'll go. It sucks being effectively banned from so many places. Florida sucks ass but I would have liked to have the option of escaping the winter there. Plus they have theme parks.

Jesus, I can't believe people are still suggesting places like that to you, Fran. Are they really that unplugged from the political reality of today? Guys, the hostility is real and the ascendancy of the far right has emboldened the bigots to act on their hate and the laws are stripping trans people of their rights to exist. I lived in Florida for quite a few years over a decade ago and even as a white cis guy (although a very left-leaning one, politically) it sucked. It's gotten so much worse since then.

Circuitmike

Yes, unfortunately we have become a nation of haves and have-nots with respect to both LBGTQ+ people and women. Although I am a 60+ CIS male, I would (and have) refuse(d) to move to any of those states. It's just a really sad state of affairs in our country today.

Doug Perrenoud

Admittedly this doesn't have all *that* much to do with your video, Fran, I just needed to vent :)

I've lived all my life in Florida. Born on the space coast, grew up next to NASA, I dearly loved this state. I'm queer but for a very long time I was a big Florida apologist - it's not so bad as long as you stick to the big cities! The past few years have made it abundantly clear, however, that the state government will stop at nothing to make life hell for basically any minority they don't particularly like and think would win them political points, especially queer and trans people. They consistently pass laws removing home rule from cities whenever cities try to be accommodating or reasonable or even just not actively hostile. They used the already-dubious cover of "protecting children" to pass a bunch of anti-trans laws with stuff in them that has absolutely nothing to do with children, making it much harder for my wife and friends to get medication they need which, if stopped abruptly, can cause serious health complications. I cannot state this clearly enough: the state government of Florida put my wife's life in danger to win political points. I have finally given up trying to make this work and am moving away in less than a year. Fuck this state.

While I wish I could visit Canaveral at some point in my life, it's out of the question now, even if I had a visa and could afford travel and lodgings... Time will tell what happens in October. I sincerely hope for the best - and if that fails, we're ready to accept refugees. People fled Germany (and occupied Europe) to the States almost a hundred years ago - time to return the favor if necessary. Poland is pretty okay, at least in certain areas like mine. It still has a long way to go, but at least the government doesn't spread hateful propaganda against queer people anymore.

Having to lug all your junk along aside, it WOULD be a good idea to move somewhere more tolerant and accepting. But in the US, you're probably best off somewhere in California, or perhaps one of the states like Vermont or Oregon. Or perhaps Canaderp, eh?

horrovac

Point taken, but to be frank, I won't visit USA at all, and I certainly wouldn't move to Florida, even though I'm the whitest, cishettest and malest dude imaginable. All this hate and intolerance may not affect me directly, but it permeates everything and affects even the most privileged of people by the back door. I don't want to even be in such a place, let alone live there. I couldn't bear it.

horrovac

Yes indeed, it matters! Pity that they can't move out of their comfortable white cishet male perspective and understand how the world is made into hell for the likes of us by the likes of them. (I'll keep the video's comment section under an extra close watch - expecting an onslaught of bigoted or divisive comments after it goes full-on public)
