Amazing Heart Machines: Oura and Kardia

Just a couple of the gadgets that I am using - not an endorsement or a review. Enjoy!

Amazing Heart Machines: Oura and Kardia

Comments

I recently purchased one of the Kardia 6L to monitor some irregular heart stuff, too. Mine was a one-shot VFib that the doctors weren't too excited about, but being a gadget freak, I decided it was an excuse to monitor stuff. Rather impressive signal processing in this unit as well. The 6L does a three-wire measurement to perform a 6 lead EKG and it shows remarkable similarity to that obtained by a 'REAL' multi-K$ machine.

I also have a CGM from a different company (Dexcom) and it uses an inserted electrode. I don't think it's possible to get glucose readings just from skin contact.

These things cost a fortune... I could only afford a teardown if it broke!

I have the kind that uses an inserted electrode and lasts for 2 weeks - Abbott Freestyle 14-day. It stores a running 8-hour record of readings and can send the data to the app on your phone via an NFC connection.

I'd love to see my glucose levels; not diabetic, but want to control my sugar swings. Does your CGM use an implanted or inserted electrode, or can it do it with just skin contact?

David Etchells

Very interesting - thanks. It's an indicator of the future of health self-management. I wear a continuous glucose monitor for diabetes... it is incredibly useful and much less bother than sticking fingertips multiple times a day.

If you want to see inside it, I think Becky Stern has done a teardown of the Oura.
