Mechanical Pencils

Time to look at some new mechanical pencils, and some rather old ones... Enjoy!

I love mechanical pencils, although these days I rarely write anything by hand. Have you tried the Uni Kuru Toga? That's got a clever mechanism in it that rotates the lead every so slightly every time it touches the paper, giving you even wear and line width. I'm also a fan of the old flat metal Slencil mechanical pencils from the 40s or so. They were made by a company in Orange, MA (where I lived for a few years). The company's still around and they make things like those weird triangular tethered pens you might see at a bank or something. Here's a link about the mechanical pencil I'm talking about: http://davesmechanicalpencils.blogspot.com/2012/08/social-slencil-mechanical-pencil.html

Pentel is what I've mostly used - I like them and they're widely available in the UK. Also Japanese - I associate japanese graphics mostly with ink and brushes. I haven't seen wood-cased mechanical pencils before.

That's a beauty. Looks and sounds very tactile. I've never associated mechanical pencils with anything other than technical drawing, so it's really nice you can get them with softer, thicker graphite as well.

Back in 1981 when I started as an apprentice draughtsman I was issued with a set of Pentel pencils with lead sizes of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9mm, they were colour coded for the different sizes. I've pretty much stuck with them since then, although only the 0.3 and 0.5 are still the originals. But at some point Pentel changed the 0.3 colour from purple to brown and that's just wrong!

That packaging is too nice to throw it in the trash after you’ve opened it. Keep making the pen & pencil videos.

I had lots of mechanical pencils, but my go-to was always Pentel.
