Fran, this reminds me a lot of my first encounter with a digital 'scope, except that I was troubleshooting a critical piece of machinery that HAD to be done. Nothing like a little pressure to help the learning experience huh?
Instead of jumping right in and trying to use it, my recommendation is that you sit down with the manual for a few minutes and get to know the beast. There are a couple of "Auto" buttons that will automagically lock onto the frequency and voltage being applied, set the attenuation and sweep and will give a stable display and show the measured values on screen.
Watching your efforts I suspect that you are right about there being a problem with the instrument. Looks to me like the attenuator section may have gotten blasted, but give it a shot. They're wonderfully handy once you beat them into submission!
Oh yeah, the manual is available from Tek's website in PDF form here:

P.S. don't worry about impedance. It will work just like your trusty analog scope.

I had the tds2024b at one time. It wasn’t a great scope. Terrible screen indeed and very annoying ‘laggy’ response to all the knobs. Quite noisy too. If this is your first digital scope, it will not be a great experience.
