During the summer of 1960 I remember looking up in the night sky trying to see ECHO as it passed overhead. The local (Cincinnati) TV stations would say on air during the news as to when it would be best to see it. Sometimes it was easy and sometimes not.

“The Gemini 76 mission” it was called. It’s good we got to do this. The damn Atlas-Agena upper stage that carried the Target Docking Adapter was easily the least reliable bit of kit in the entire program (setting aside Apollo 1 as a special case unto itself). If the guys of the 76 mission has not shown that rendezvous was less challenging than anticipated, the the modest amount of experience with a working Agena-TDA would have been a much bigger issue. Docking was well-simulated on the ground. Orbital rendezvous simulation had much lower fidelity.

Lots of astronauts in this one and Gus and John again! Great short history of the early Gemini program as well.
