True Ageusia For Supertasters!

Comments

Oh no 😢 I hope you at least recover a “functional safety” level of taste / smell soon for all the reasons you describe. And with luck at least some of the good parts of being a super taster come back too. Rest up, get well soon.

Ewen McNeill

All the more reason for those of us who are masking despite being vaccinated to continue to do so: we need to protect each other! Healing thoughts to you.

Dave Land

Ugh, you got it, how awful. I'm a poet and I can't find the right words, I can only tell you I have listened and been transfixed and in a small way understand what you must be going through. Health be with you.

Get well soon.

Joacim Wennerberg

I hope that you will not further impair your health with the move.

William E Lee

I hope yours return. I am also on the upswing and lost taste and smell completely for about 3 days. It appears to be slowly coming back and I'm hopeful. Much love to you, Fran.

Hope your recovery is rapid and complete! Great collection of observations and thoughts regarding the implications of this condition.

Just imagine how you could amaze everyone by eating Carolina Reaper curries without a single twitch!

Ymir the Frost Giant

Definitely don't over exert yourself, is there any way you can get help with the packing once your quarantine period is up of course. I want to try to help so I've done the only thing I can an extra 10UKP on my monthly patronage. Hope you get as much sense and taste back as possible, sending healing, or prayers or whatever you want to call it. 😊

Dr Andy Hill

Oooh, I never knew you'd got it! Thank God (or your preferred deity) that you were vaccinated.

Dr Andy Hill

Hang in there mate

BUGGER ALL!! I am so sorry. Your life has been complex enough without yet another 5-sigma event visited upon you. Now I’m concerned about you making the timeline for the move for any of several reasons. If getting you additional help for the process is useful, please lets talk about the best way to help.

Mike O'Dell

Holy HELL, Fran! A good (vaccinated) friend of mine is in your exact state, recovering from breakthrough COVID. Did you get a PCR test? Is it the Delta variant? Love your "nook", especially the background. I have a very similar setup with a keyboard and stringed instruments. Only my keyboard is a 56 key Casio, and my instruments are all ukuleles.

I also wonder... I've often argued that smell is something like music, in that two people can be in a room observing the same thing- but the musician will be noticing SO MUCH MORE of it due to having developed an language and a syntax and a grammar for what they're observing... I wonder if the same isn't true for smell? Of those self-reporting: how many are people who haven't a very deep relationship to their own sense of smell in the first place, and only note the most obvious cases?

Mike Stubbs

I was frankly concerned a video or so ago when you'd discussed having some symptoms... this think is SO WEIRD. Last year before, vaccines were available, I'd caught it, and despite three positive tests, I was 100% asymptomatic (this thing is SO WEIRD). I'm double-vaxxed now, soon to be triple, and if anything, that experience has made me even more diligent: there's so little we know about this, and what if I'm somehow naturally an always-asymptomatic Typhoid Mary? So glad you're on the mend.

Mike Stubbs

I wondered what the experience of losing all smell and taste was like and you did a really fantastic job of explaining your experience. I had not thought of the reliance I have on smell when using solvents. The three solvents I use the most for instrument and control panel restoration are grain alcohol, acetone and naptha. I rely heavily on smell when using these three chemicals. All of them are colorless. Without smell, the acetone and alcohol would "feel" the same since both are thin and evaporate quickly. But acetone eats paint, and literally melts plastic, so I am extremely careful with it. Not smelling it would be a real concern. Naptha stinks too, but it is thicker and has a slightly oily feeling as it it is a petroleum derivative. I could make a lot of non-recoverable mistakes without smell and taste to confirm which chemical I'm using. The vapor of these chemicals does have a slight taste, but the smell overrides the taste for the most part. So I think I could lose smell alone and still "sense" these by their slight taste. But to lose both smell and taste leaves me with nothing to detect what I'm using. Like you mentioned, burning electronics is a critical ability. Without question, unless a capacitor explodes, I would miss the smell and whatever is burning would have to wait until it was visible. Not good! As Peder mentioned earlier, I read that most people get back all of their taste and smell. I'm sure you will too, but it will be so gradual, that you might be frustrated for a while. Hey, for something like ammonia, which would usually make us gag reflexively with the smell. If you try to smell ammonia, does your body automatically reflex regardless of your loss of smell and taste?

Dear Fran, my best wishes for recovery! ...And only advice when you want it! Love Thomas.

Get well soon Fran.

I have a lot of friends and family who has total and then I mean 100% loss of smell and taste, and none of them are in any way shape or form changed in the way they taste or smell after they recovered. So I don’t think it’s all that black and white that you can say you are gonna be affected if you have a total loss during recovery. I’m hoping you get it back to normal too. :) And I’m quite sure you will. Those papers focus on the outliers. I have not heard or read about a single case in wich you have permanent total loss here in Norway.

Get well soon. The taste and smell will come back after you have gotten it out of your system. :)

Sorry you're going through this, Fran. Get well soon!

Same thing happened to my wife and she is slowly getting her smell and taste back over the last couple of months. Best intentions for a speedy recovery.

Kirby Kirby

I truly hope you get the senses back, but I'm very impressed by the way you are treating this almost as an experiment. You really are a scientist.

David Peaker

So what are the health order rules in your state once you have covid? Do you have to isolate inside for 2 weeks?

EEVblog

Get well soon!

It would be really interesting to experiment with all this using a double blind experiment while eating.

EEVblog

Damn, sorry to hear :-( I hope that's not permanent.
